X-Wing Paint

Ok once I finish the cockpit I'll upload some pics there's just not much to look at currently, hopefully during the weekend I'll have some pictures to post from my x-wing and tie interceptor I'm working on, no progress on the larger tie I have hit a dead end it requires me to purchase a 27mm or 1 1/16 drill bit but here in Australia we dont have those unusual sizes we only have the common ones, I guess I'll have to keep looking around.

Bunnings should have the bits you're after. We use metric here but the imperial bits are readily available.

Simon.

Ive looked at Bunnings, Home hardware, mitre 10 Etc all the ones in the local area, I have found one online looks like its my only option at the moment even 26mm or 27mm would be fine but it seems to go from 25mm which is way too small to 28mm which is way too big we seem to just skip those sizes here in Aus, my other option is purchasing a different rod size but then I run the risk of it not fitting in the sphere mmm descions, descions

Hey guys as promised just a few progress pics, sorry about the quality they are from my phone, also they are not completley finished, soon I will be posting a official WIP thread but for now until I get around to doing it here are some quick pictures.

Thanks again guys

nice work mate, i think you are the first to post build pix if the PY kit. Its coming along nicely. keep em coming.

Instead of the solid orange of the flight suit, I would mix a little white with it to mask it a shade lighter. Then I would drybrush over the creases in the flightsuit giving it a bit more depth. Highlights if you like. Does that make any sense?

Yeah it makes sense ive done alot of minature modeling and that is one of the techniques I have used in the past, its far from finished as stated in my post it was just to show what I was up to, thanks for the suggestion I will give it a try over the weekend, what color would should I use for the depth?

Thanks again

Take your base color for the flight suit and add a darker color to it, just a little bit though. Do not use black to make it darker, use a dark brown. Then using your base coat add a little white and drybrush the highest points on the suit with this lighter color. At this point it may look like it has to much contrast between the three colors. Take your base color again and thin it out so it's watery. Brush the entire suit with this thin watery color. Once it dries it will help mute and pull the colors together. Spray it with Testors Dullcoat after it's all dry. That will give you a nice clean looking flight suit. Of course nothing wa clean in SW so you should then add browns and dark greys to "dirty" the suit up.

The tub - in those images - looks a little too rich/black. The dash looks good, but I'd break up the stark black tub if you can. Some charcoal grey washes or highlights.

Yeah I have spent about half the time I wanted to on those two pieces but when I was about half way through i realised that the dashboard I picked covers up about 80% of that bucket piece, which had me abit annoyed as it took me alot of time that's why it had not been touched up yet im about half way through I think I will just rework the exposed bits and atleast if there is the smallest gap it will still be painted, and yes the photos do exaggerate the blacks alot once I get some batteries for my good camera I will take some shots with it but until then it's phone pictures and thanks again fir the tips I will give them a try

Hey guys long time since the last post, but I thought I would give a quick update and bring the thread back to life, I finally have the x-wing built up to a point that I can't go any further until some painting is done.

over the past months or weeks I got serious, started sourcing wood and managed to pick up two $150 fans for $5 each at the local tip and spending all weekend with my dad constructing, I finally now have a spray booth that will suck any fume in up to half a meter away from the opening lol, so I finally have some where to use the new air brush I got.

so I was just wondering if anyone could give me some tips for both hull, detail and weathering detail techinques for air brushing a x-wing to give it the nice dirty look. As this is my first time using a air brush I am very confident with a normal brush so I'm not sure how they differ.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hey guys

wow it's hard to believe I started this build in 2011 a lot has happened since my last update.
I have started painting the wings and have done a massive amount of wiring for all the electronics I will post some pictures up tomorrow when its day time.
My dad and I thought up a cost effective way for some of the lighting effects which have turned out pretty cool :).

Pics coming soon Thanks guys

Never really left, life got in the way and I took on one too many projects I have prioritised and my life is back on track so now I can get back into the good stuff :)

Ok guys this is the first update I have done in a while so bare with me :)

I have painted the wings using the black undercoat with lots of light white layers on top method and its coming along ok.

This next group of photos show how I will be wiring up all the electronics and how I will be "hiding" the switch and charging port.

The final group of photos for this update will be showing the LED's and wiring for the cockpit and what the engine LED's look like and how R2 even has a couple of LED's of his own :)

The final part of this update will be about my engine configuration as I looked into purchasing a lighting kit specifically made for SS X-Wing kits, I found they were a bit pricey not saying they are not worth it, but if you cannot afford it or like doing things yourself like my dad and I then this is a pretty clever idea my dad came up with, not sure if it has been mentioned on this forum before but what we did was we bought a bunch of cheapo led candles off eBay we gutted them and pulled them apart and took all the circuit boards out of them, we then wired the engine LED's into them and it provides a very subtle pulse to the engines and looks really nice, so I decided to make a couple of videos about it and attach it to this update, I tried my best to capture it on film though it does look much better in person this is just to give you all an idea of how it works and what it could look like on your model :).

If possible max out the quality and make the video full screen as its hard to see the effect on camera :)
