WAR MACHINE Mark II (Formerly Canadian Patriot) Repaint Complete - VIDEO First Post

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

Just bought those valved dust masks. Glad to know they're more than efficient! Thanks for the info guys~
I was about to ask when do you know you need to replace them, I guess it's when you can blow dust out your nose...? xD

Very much looking forward to you MK42 updates as well STEALTH, as that's the helmet I'm currently working on and I'm interested to see how you handle the ear sections and cheek details!

trying to keep ahead of stef, hard though when he is on the ball ha just getting the helmet prepped before bondo but doing this tutorial on a mark vi . I have the neck piece done and chest and a question for you guys that i have seen xrobots use pva glue . gave it three coats but does not completely dry clear. ive also plastidip on the way instead on the smoothcast 65b option so if anyone has used that before please let me know how you got on.

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

I used plastidip on my mark 4. It worked great but doesn't dry nearly as hard as smooth on. More of a rubber texture.

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

you know yourself how expensive smooth-on can be to complete a whole suit. so i might just give this ago for now, maybe just trial and error lol heres hoping

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

I'd actually like to see those Blender Tutorials. I've dabbled in 3D modelling before. I just never had time to keep at it.
I'm actually going to be building a 42 soon. I need it to go with my Patriot for Halloween.

I'm working on that helmet on the side. I'll show some progress of that soon.

I think I'm going to use a mix of yours and Jackie's files. You guys are awesome.
I got a blender for dummies book on ebay wanna make little stuff for me ;)
But first im finishing war machine :)

great job stealth im learning a lot

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

guys got a can of plastidip it was white in colour and I applied it on the neck piece I have done. problem now is that it is really lumpy!!!! should I have got the can spray?

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

I used roll on plastidip or whatever. The spray stuff works great but needs several layers. And become expensive Quite quickly. I used 1 can of spray on for the helmet and about 3 cans of the paint on for a whole suit.
The stuff is self leveling so paint it on and give it a chance to dry. If it is too bad after fully drying, you can sand it out.

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

maybe im doing it wrong drack. my pva is not going totally clear also after three coats.are you just applying with normal paint brush? ive put a coat of primer on and can still see the foam coming through so its far from smooth .it must be me doing something. did you thin yours also?. i might have to start over

If Stealth and drack wouldn't mind, I'll try to answer :unsure

I use normal paint brush, and it works for me.

If you can still see the foam texture coming through, try to do a couple of coats more. Make sure you bought undiluted PVA (not the "school glue" - as Stealth said in his tutorials, it's often very diluted, what you need usually can be found at home depot or somewhere like craft stores)

About PVA "not going totally clear" - if you mean it's still has some white spots after drying, I guess it's because the PVA didn't dry completely. You can use hairdryer or heatgun to fix these spots, just make sure the temperature isn't too high (don't melt the foam). But when coating the foam with the first couple coats of PVA, this trick may cause some issues, because PVA must soak into foam's pores to prevent further coatings peeling off, and to provide smooth surface. And if you dry it up with hairdryer, I think there wouldn't be enough time for PVA to soak in.
I make first coat of PVA (diluted 50/50 so it soaks in foam better), then leave it alone so it dries by itself, then repeat with the second coat, and every other coats I do with undiluted PVA, using hairdryer.

Sorry for my poor english, still have a lot to learn.
p.s. nice helmet, by the way. keep it up! :thumbsup

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

Hello all. I have a question. You'll have to reference the pictures to make sense of it though. It seems to me that the fact that cardboard is three dimensional has the potential to throw off the proportions. Depending upon how you glue it you may end up extending a face, leaving you with a helmet with improper dimensions. Short of cutting the joining edges of the parts at an angle (45 degrees or otherwise) how can you overcome this problem? I tried carving out the back of the cardboard in order to do a fold instead of a cut but I didn't foresee the next problem (see image 2). I'm loath to alter the faces of the pieces to any degree, I fear that that is tantamount to cutting the pieces of a jigsaw to make a fit. Am I over thinking things? This is my first build (and first post on the RPF) after all. Thanks so much for any advice you can offer and I look forward to being part of the community!

A little overthinking, but you are absolutely right about throwing the proportions off. When assembling, just concentrate on maintaining your outer dimensions. Depending on the cardboard you are using, you can trim back the inside edge to make 45s or whatever angle you need, and then reinforce the initial gluing with more hot glue behind the joint. Just use scissors to trim back the inside edges. The thickness of the cardboard and density of the corrugation also affects how clean and strong these corners can be made, so sometimes it's worth picking and choosing the stock you are using if you can. I try and get cardboard that has a laminated and color printed side (like what small appliances/fans/etc come in); the cardboard is usually stronger, has a pretty well-packed corrugation, and the laminate side is usually really smooth and doesn't suck up primer like raw stuff would.

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

I did notice something while applying the resin to the helmet. Turn it upside down to let the resin seep into the corrugated layers. It is much easier to get under the jaw as well. I will be prepping it for bondo this week. I cannot wait for the bondo tutorials..

Here's where I'm at so far. Still needs a lot of work.
Can't upload much until I finish this filler stage completely.

just thinking nowafter another reply ..i got the pva glue from tesco so is their own brand and fairly cheap. maybe this is the problem? i should have tried on a test piece of foam first

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

It shouldn't be I uses cheap stuff from 99p shop but make sure you use five coats and a few coats of primer it my be a bit bubbly but just use wet and dry paper to get it smooth
