Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6B -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

Woo, 6C has been the part I've been waiting on!
I hear that fiberglass dust is some of the worst things to breath in, so is there any specific way and location i.e. outdoors, to blow away all the dust stuck to the helmet after trimming the fray fiberglass, and wire brushing the inside? I'm sure wearing the helmet with a bunch of dust inside probably isn't ideal...

Also, would it be possible to go around the inside with a coarse grit sandpaper rather than use wire brush?

Thanks again, keep up the awesome work :)
Always a highlight when seeing a new tutorial in my sub box!

Here are a few options:

You could get a cheap air compressor and use that to blow it off.
I was going to get one to demonstrate but wasn't sure how far people wanted to go with this in regards to spending money on it.

You could just get those Computer cleaning propellant Cans as well to remove it all
or just get a damp cloth and wipe the dust off
or better yet, Alcohol in a spray bottle and a cloth.
Spray it on and wipe it off.
The dust will stick right to the cloth/rag and the alcohol will just evaporate after.

just get 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol from the Pharmacy.

Lots of different ways to be honest.

I was going to mention these things once we got to using body Filler as there is going to be a lot of dust compared to this.
This was nothing really.

Yes, you could sand it down with sand paper just be careful.
The wire brush works too well not to use though.

Dust is not as bad as fumes from resin..if you get some dust in your nose you'll be fine..lol..but is recommended you use a dust mask.they sell a box for a few bucks..also i really recommend this pneumatic angle grinder..i have a compressor so I used this..if you have a drill you can buy just the attachments..it's easier to use, for clean up resin or scuff to prep for bondo..well here it is and attatchments...

Can we use the N95Mask instead of Stealth's respirator? In his previous video, if I recalled correctly, he said it's okay to use that, but I'm not sure if it's okay to use this mask for ALL of the steps.

That mask will definitely be good..its ment for dust not for fumes like resin though..the respirator stealth showed is ment for fumes you may be able to use it for dust but it will clog the respirator s elements..and its more expensive to change than to buy those mask..

Stealth I was just watching your cardboard helmet build and how did you do the ear where they just different cardboard or are they painted

Thats a great tip and seems so obvious now that you said it, those paper masks are heck of a lot cheaper than the respirator filters!

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6B -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

I use the higher-end cartridge respirators when sealing and painting cars (the stuff with fumes and aerosol particles), but then I switch to paper respirators for all of my block sanding between coats and for finishing. Three reasons I do this:
1- I wanted Cartridge respirators with the better filters to keep vaporized paint/resin fumes/etc. out of my lungs when using my sprays and chemicals
2-I switch to paper respirators (the good 3m ones) when sanding, because the main concern is keeping larger particulate dust out of my lungs. Also, block sanding makes me sweaty and filthy, and I like to be able to toss the respirator when it gets wrecked
3-I also switch because I didn't want my good respirator getting its filters (and the body itself) getting clogged up with sanding dust. My good respirator also has to go back in to the paint booth for final painting, and I don't want ANY dust anywhere near the pieces, even built up on my respirator. It's annoying to tear down and clean the cartridge respirator properly.

Don't get me wrong, paper filters don't get ALL the dust, but they work well enough for me. I just squish thee little metal strips down on my nose and go to town.

Can't Disagree with that man. Well put. I was wearing a dust mask in the video but totally forgot to mention it.
I think you can see it at times on the top right.

I'll make sure to mention it for sanding. Thanks everyone.

Hey Stealth the helmet's looking great. But i did'nt know that you had to prime the helmet before bondo. My bad...GM

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

you really don't. I said "optional"

I just do it cause I don't like it in that state with it looking like cardboard.

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

Very helpful information regarding the safety side of things!
I honestly didn't expect there to be so much dust, maybe quite ignorant of me xD

Just wondering, would the 3M 9322 dust mask be suitable enough for both sanding and fiberglass dust? (are these the ones you have laellee ?)

I have a nicer respirator for fumes, but reading from the things above, it's best not to get that clogged right.

I'm with Stealth on priming the cardboard before bondo. For me at least, it's a lot easier to catch imperfections and proportion problems when the part is a uniform color, less stuff for your eyes to get tricked by.
Madosheet, those would work perfect. Honestly though, I don't even spring for the ones with the valve, I just get the 3m 8200 or 8210s. I've used those for years while finishing both cars and drywall, and I don't have emphysema yet (cough cough), but If you can afford better ones by all means get 'em.

I was thinking of getting those with the valve yesterday but then remembered how well the regular ones work. I hardly get any dust in my nose.
That's a good indication of how well your mask is working and also coughing up whatever color you've sanded mixed with Phlegm...
That's how you know your mask sucks and also, maybe not wearing one at all and that's what's happening.

Always use a dust mask.

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

Great videos stealth! I really enjoy your stuff! You've ever inspired me to think about making my own tutorials for building an iron man model in blender and creating pep files. (your tutorials really take it from there better than I could hope to! Haha) of course this won't happen until my mark 42 files are done... (the end is in sight!!)
Speaking of the mark 42, when are you gonna build one?? If you need pep files, I know a guy.... :lol

Re: IRON PATRIOT Costume TUTORIAL Part 6C -Filling, Sanding Pepakura (HELMET) Page 7

I'd actually like to see those Blender Tutorials. I've dabbled in 3D modelling before. I just never had time to keep at it.
I'm actually going to be building a 42 soon. I need it to go with my Patriot for Halloween.

I'm working on that helmet on the side. I'll show some progress of that soon.

I think I'm going to use a mix of yours and Jackie's files. You guys are awesome.
