Unsure of next steps

Good morning all. I am working on a Halo Mk V helmet. I started with a Pepakura file and am close to completing the assembly. This is my first time doing this sort of thing and I'm doing it as a gift so I want it to look good. I was thinking that I would cover the paper with 2mm craft foam, stiffen it a bit if needed, then paint it. Looking at other builds, however, I'm seeing that they've either started out with 4-6mm foam, which I don't really have the skill set for, or they coat the paper build with fiberglass and resins.

Will my method work well or am I asking for trouble? Is there a less-involved method of finishing the build than making several coats of materials that likely require adequate ventilation?

Thanks,
