Tron Legacy Costume

Light Tape is way way expensive, I talked to them in the past.
I bought mine at Luminous film, and their website with PDFs explains almost EVERYTHING about EL Tape (they call it Split Electrode Lamp). Take a look and you learn a lot. Priceless!

Luminous Film has a nice site and I like a couple of their DC inverters. Their PDF is very handy.

Sorry for busting in here without catching up, but I was wondering if anyone had any info on this guy? He has a rather nice Daft Punk Cameo suit, and I'd be curious to know who the maker is:

Nice. That is the next costume I am working on. I was at the con but didnt see him. Would have asked him about the suit if I had.

Ideed they are.
I talked to them and asked a ton of questions. The guy there, Patrick, is the nicest ever. Not extremely fast on replies, but he had a lot of patience with all my questions and gave me very good info.

Hey everyone, I wanted to see what the collective genius thought of this idea for modifying the ID disk:

I plan on casting a new c ring and flange ring for the disk.

I have heard, that EL wire is much like glow sticks, so, I thought before I go down that road, why not stuff glow sticks in the thing and see what it looks like. Here are the results

As you can see, the outer ring is dim at best, and this is in low light, no flash.

Side view shows it is hardly lit. I am thinking about removing the attachment, or having a channel inside the flange ring to run the EL wire, so it will actually sit pretty well on the outside. What are the thoughts; will this be bright enough or will I have to go the route of LEDs for the disk?

A lot of people have already tried disc modifications with EL wire; it just doesn't glow bright enough. It'll do, but it won't have the same effect as LEDs. LEDs are the preferred route, and a few people on theRPF are going down that road. There are also a few people casting clear/transparent inner and outer rings and opaque rings as well, allowing for the disc color to be changed by changing the color of the LEDs inside.

Ya. I am aware of the other discussions and know of the other disk mods that are going on, I guess that answers it that no one has tried embedding the EL wire into the inner ring.

Btw I just cut a strip of EL Tape and sealed the edge off with electrical tape and it still worked. This is a big relief since I want to run some in the inner lining of my hood.

Yup. Cutting and sealing a length of ELTape seems easy enough to do.. my question is how do we cut a bit off the main length and then wire the 'removed' length to make it a working section as well? I know the process, but I don't know the connectors needed. :confused

thormungandr. That is my hope, I would rather stick to a single medium for lighting the suit so I don't have an uneven feeling, that way if I do not get a picture perfect setup for the costume, at least one part does not look so much better then the rest that it causes the rest of my suit to look like junk.

Ohhhh.. there's a page 2-4? *grin*
Here's a bit of GlowHut ELTape I have on hand.

I assume the connectors need to be on the opposite sides (real narrow on one side) of the white line going down the back of the tape?

I've dremeled a slot in the side of the ring just large enough for the el wire. But the brightness is the same as if it was behind the ring. which is pretty dim.

Yes. You can strip off the clear laminate and touch the inverter wires to those areas and the tape will light up.
The hard part is making a durable permanent connection without soldering.

Dang, that is not the news I wanted. Did you end up using high bright LEDs, or did you stick to the EL wire?

Hello all,

Don't know if this has been addressed previously (100 pages is a lot to sort through) but I found a decent way of making a low profile helmet. Basically, I went to my local thrift store and bought a cruddy skateboard helmet. I pryed apart the inner foam and the hard plastic shell, then used a serrated knife to whittle down the inner foam and get it to a shape I liked. A little bondo, a little paint, and voila, it is ready for lights.

So my first post...hmmm great way to make an impression by asking a question I guess.
So I skipped around in this thread and have read a good amount on El tape. I went to my local Goodwill/Thrift store a bought a nice cheap jacket and a nice pair of "motorcycle" pants. I plan on hitting both up with some El tape to make my costume. So here is my question. Can I cut apart the tape, solder it, and then run wire under the clothes? Would this work? I was looking at doing about....5 or 6 feet of light around my outfit, and go for something that looks like the "half faced man" picture that was posted.

So uhm yeah, basically I just have questions on using El tape, can any point me to a good tutorial on using it, and possibly a good site to buy from. I did find a site offering it for around $9 for around five feet of the stuff.

I can refer you to glowhut.com. I've been buying from them and their prices arent terrible. I guess its convenient for me since I live only a few cities away from them and pretty much get my stuff the next day

so as most of you know, i am building a tron betrayal costume, and theres a few things i need help with. if anyone can see any problems with it so far (not design problems, thats perfect. im talking about like problems with it being even.) i would appreciate being told. also ive put the outside rim of the kevin flynn disc on the sam flynn identity disc to make it look more accurate like in the movie. again, this costume is the one from the flashbacks of tron in tron legacy (also in the comic tron betrayal). does anyone know of a way to keep the ID disc to stay lit without having to replace the inside lights?

Looked at glowhut before I really started reading up on the stuff so I sort of passed them over.
I am looking at this set
3 pieces of electroluminescent tape set

So all I need to do is attach the tape to the outfit, wire it into the splitter/inverter and I am good to go, right?

Also what do you guys think of using "engineering grade reflective tape" as a poor mans Tron style costume? Does anyone have any experience with the stuff? Does it look decent at least?

All these options are good starts, though reading through this thread will answer all these questions as they have been hashed around a bunch. :angel

Yes I know they have been hashed around a bit. I was just hoping that at some point in all that hashing someone may have whipped up or found a compilation of how to work with El tape. I am not exactly mechanically inclined(yay for a paleontology degree) so I am a wee bit inept in this sort of thing.
