Tron Legacy Costume

I know this thread isn't about Daft Punk exactly, but do you think this AJ made the new Daft Punk helmets, or just took existing helmets and put the lights in them? I'm leaning towards the latter.

The helmets for the movie, including Daft Punk's apparently, were made by Ironhead Studios.

AJ just did the lighting effects for the helmets.

That's what I thought, thanks Nick :)

Now the question is, are Ironhead Studios going to be making Daft Punk's helmets from now on, or are DP eventually going to go back to their friends at Alterian Inc once of this Tron Legacy business is over?

Vicious, In response to your earlier post about Castor's ourfit, I'd say for the vest portion, take a look at another thread floating around on the RPF about "Fallout New Vegas Ranger Armor". The OP goes into detail about how he got some cheap foam mats from Harbor Freight, and after molding them with a band saw and belt sander, he was able to hot glue them together and heat gun them into some pretty wicked armor. Plus, they're already a good gray color just like Castor's chestplate. Probably what'd be best beyond that is looking for a tails tuxedo pattern (or an old one you can take apart to make a rough pattern yourself) and going from there. As for the Cane, I'd say an LED flashlight for the handle and clear acryllic compound would do nicely. Add your own Ziggy Stardust flare, and you're solid!

Some good ideas on the foam. I was looking to put the chest armor under a fabric t-shirt (maybe underarmor) since that's what it appears to look like. Just have to use some adhesive for the fabric to stick to the armor form.

We have a long civil war coat pattern that we are going to alter.

As to the cane, I already have some extra lightsaber blades and lighting kit that I'm going to use. Just have to fashion a handle for it.

Somebody on the Unfiction Forums said they picked 1 up at Target. Not sure what state or city yet. I sent a PM and when I gbet a response I'll post it here.

I pass a target on the way home, it's where I got my Sam disc and my Lightcycle baton. Will check there and report back.

UPDATE: I got what might be the last Kevin and Rinzler discs in Orlando.

Target carries them, but they list all 3 discs under the same SKU. A kind employee went to the back and got them out for me. I filled out a nice comment card for him.

Just ordered a Rinzler disc from eBay, paid a little more for it than I would have liked, but that's what I get for wanting it soon :p

I'll be modifying the LEDs, changing them to yellow to get a CLU glow from the rinzler disc, since the rings are orange.

OK we are set to go see Tron Legacy.... again ;) Friday January 7th at the El Capitan Hollywood, CA. Still deciding on a time slot it will either be 7:45pm or 10:45pm. Leaning towards the earlier 7:45pm.

Get your tixs and join in the fun! Costumes encouraged!

I seriously cannot stop oogling this. I can't even put in to words how much I LOVE that creation. It is IMPECCABLE. So imaginative and perfectly executed! Your work is phenomenal and I hope you post more of it or like it! So amazing... I don't know how it's still in progress! It looks flawless as it is!

aelynn000, thanks for the kind words! Glad you like the dress. Here's a pic in better light, where you can see some of the details better. You can see the lighting on the back in the reflection in the window.

Jinyo so you used EL TAPE and FILM? by Film do you mean Light Tape? or what type of film do you mean? I have not heard of EL film. I bet that stuff was expensive. What widths of El Tape/Film did you use as well?

and the detailing of Victoria's dress is amazing! The sequins and what looks like a textured print. Didn't notice your different uses of fabric until you posted a close up photo. Always admired you guys work!

...

I agree, his dress is flawless and incredible unique work, but as a costumer designer, your work is never done or perfect. We always want everything we do to be flawless. Perfectionism at it's best ;)

Annisse, EL film is not Light Tape (which, I assume, is EL tape). But it's basically the same thing, but in rectangular sheets instead of a long strip. I used 7/16", but after seeing the movie I might end up making it narrower, since Quorra's narrow strips look pretty narrow in the movie. I used the film at 1 1/4" width.

You're right about perfectionism! I look at the dress and all I see is all the things I wanted to do, but didn't have time for before the movie. It's a curse. :lol From the looks of your awesome work, it's obvious you know what I mean!

BTW, don't get your EL tape from All Electronics! I tried some of their stock, and it's crap. They sell used EL tape, which must be at the end of its lifespan, because it is very dim.

I've been lurking around here for a while too. After seeing the movie I knew I just HAD to make a Quorra costume for myself and this site has been a treasure trove of info and techniques I've never seen or thought of before. Bravo to all you clever folks here! :thumbsup

Anyhoo, prior to finding this site my thoughts on how to do Quorra's torso "armor" were pretty much centered around making a form of my own torso using paper mache or something and then sculpting the shape of the armor onto it with oil-based clay. After that I would make a mold of the clay parts and produce rubber casts, much as you describe.

I've found this in my research of the process—Photo Gallery: Creating Lightweight Theatrical Costume Armor—which looks like a great way to go about it. Since Quorra's armor appears to wrap around her torso, though, I may have to make a 360° mold of my torso rather than the front-side mold that this process depicts.

Cool find! Im definitely preferring this method, since the results can be extremely screen accurate. I just need to do a little more researching before I jump into anything.

very cool dress. i like the detail and the design. it's definately very quorra. the effort shows. :)

+1 to what jinyo said, or at least be very cautious if you use them as a last resort for el.

i have a bit of notoriety there now. for the curious, here's what happened [long story]:

after looking at the light tape demo, they sold me the wrong colour -aqua instead of white. the sales guy first warned me that el tape white isn't truly white. but also he grabbed the wrong spool, which looked white when off and told me it was also white on. this was the 1-inch width version. it took him quite a very long while to get it from the back too after seeing the demo.

the salmon/pink-off is the only white 1-inch wide version they have.

it was confusing at the time since el tape also has a white-off/white-on version aka wowo (which the sales guy thought they also carried) -in addition to there being a white-off/aqua-on. subtle, but there is a difference in the blue-ish colour as you can refer to the tron legacy hero white costumes versus the game grid aqua blue. [i know they didn't use tape per se, but the colour analogy is primarily what i'm referring to.]

i went back two days later & the guy who sold it to me double-talked, saying i asked for the aqua colour. i denied this and said i wanted white-on and mentioned the white light tape, as seen on the demo table.

the boss got a bit angry and said to the sales guy they're no longer doing such & such...[i didn't get the details]
i asked if can test it before buying or see a sample so i can confirm what i'm purchasing. the sales guy said he would like to do that but they no longer can according to his boss.

from that point in time, all sales are final with all the el stuff. buy now, test it later. in my case they would only offer store credit this one time only, in which i bought i couple 1 foot samples.

also, they can no longer show the light tape demos to customers since it's 'not exactly what they carry'. this isn't entirely correct but i think in their eyes it's a way to avoid future problems altogether.

i personally would've gone another route with this, showing samples of their stock.

however, after that mix up, you would have to buy samples in 1 foot increments to see what you're getting. the other, unnatural/gel colours are easier to tell. but the aqua/cyan/white tapes need to be double checked by the customer.

be prepared if you do go this route:
1. bring your own battery-powered inverter w/alligator clips & small pliers,
2. get a 1 foot sample w/crimp-on connectors
3. crimp the connectors & test it,
then once you know what you want
4. get the length you need/want
& remember all el sales are final.

side note:
the el tape they carry is split-electrode, so they would have that small line going down the middle. parallel electrode doesn't have this line.

only one guy handles the el stuff. obishawn mentioned the el guy hates me now after that, but i still continue to shop there for other things. lol. it's business. the other sales guys are cool but, again, just be careful if you go there and know what you're getting to avoid any mix ups.

I love that dress! Great way to think outside the grid! Going to have to pass this photo onto my girlfriend.

I'm working on about 4 Tron Legacy costumes at the moment (Daft Punk, Flynn comic version, and CLU in robes). I haven't had the time to read every page of this thread, but I feel I'm up-to-dateish on what's been happening here having read a little bit each day. Now there's a lot of EL this and EL that being tossed around, not to mention Light Tape and so on. Can you elaborate a bit more on the EL Film? Is it loose and flexible? Or is it rigid? I did a google search just now and it is either trying to find spanish pages on movies (because of the "el") or its just general pages on electroluminesence. Care to share your source as well?
