Tron Legacy Costume

Oh you said CLU, true, sorry. I thought it would help you about the molding process.
I know something about that, and it's very tricky...but if you succeed, that would be the most accurate version ever.

Nice CLU pics, where did you find them? I haven't decided yet about going Sam or Rinzler/Tron suit. If you have some Rinzler pics like that it would help, thanks a lot.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

i too have been thinking about doing a rinzler/tron costume i posted it somewhere else also on the rpf but i cant remember where sorry to be foward but how would you be planning to make the rinzler armour i found a rather good reference pic for on the front of the chest uploaded by pharon66 i was considering making it out of small foam platlets and then layering them together as one protruding piece of armor but im having problems with the helmet and also deciding to go orange / white or both even what do you think about the tron/rinzler costume idea as a whole??

I posted this days ago, but I guess nobody looked at it. It might help you...

Best of luck, I wish I could go this way, but my skills have a limit....

Missed that earlier. Killer reference!
Any body know of any PEP files of the body armor that may be out there? I plan to go the eva foam route, but the pep files would be a great starting point

I posted long time ago what was my idea about the armor and how would I do it, you can search trough my posts, I think it's on page 8 of this same thread, it was a long post.

At that point I tried reflective tape, but now I found the PVC I might go this way.

But for the suit I will go as I posted there.

I haven't find many pics of Rinzler out there, just some with google search and I still can't see the low chest and hips frontal part.

I don't think this has been asked already here but since we are on the never ending topic of El Wire and lighting and how it works, I was wondering, how can you connect El tape to El sheets in sequence?

Example: I want to use El Tape to make the long straight lines for Quorra's or Sam's lights and use El Sheet to make the circles and 90 degree angle shapes. Where my El Tape line ends, how do I connect the El Sheet to the El tape to continue the lighting all together which will then lead to be connected to the inverter?

Or can you even mix El Sheet with El Tape together like that?

Justin (actordiver) can probably back me up on this but the short answer is 'yes'.

Let's say you have an inverter in your identity disk housing with a 12v power supply. Your inverter would have a 2-pin connector running from it. That connector would plug into whatever you were powering, whether it be an EL sheet piece or EL tape:

Simply run wires from each, individual EL piece you have, solder them to the main lead wire that's running from your inverter and there you go. You can mix and match whatever you wish. Thinking about substituting some EL Tape for some of my straight line designs myself...

Thanks for that link, in the related links on that page there's this Q and A with the costume designers too Tron Lightsuit VFX - Tron: Legacy Costumes - Popular Mechanics

I'd love to know what all of these diagrams mean on this technical drawing. If we could find a blown up version of this, we may be able to solve a few problems...

Because the lighted areas were custom printed shapes, I'd assume this is the "cheat" sheet. Looks like 5 unique silk-screens were created for all the sections.

I'd love better a version of these images too.

very cool dress. i like the detail and the design. it's definately very quorra. the effort shows. :)

+1 to what jinyo said, or at least be very cautious if you use them as a last resort for el.

i have a bit of notoriety there now. for the curious, here's what happened [long story]:

after looking at the light tape demo, they sold me the wrong colour -aqua instead of white. the sales guy first warned me that el tape white isn't truly white. but also he grabbed the wrong spool, which looked white when off and told me it was also white on. this was the 1-inch width version. it took him quite a very long while to get it from the back too after seeing the demo.

the salmon/pink-off is the only white 1-inch wide version they have.

it was confusing at the time since el tape also has a white-off/white-on version aka wowo (which the sales guy thought they also carried) -in addition to there being a white-off/aqua-on. subtle, but there is a difference in the blue-ish colour as you can refer to the tron legacy hero white costumes versus the game grid aqua blue. [i know they didn't use tape per se, but the colour analogy is primarily what i'm referring to.]

i went back two days later & the guy who sold it to me double-talked, saying i asked for the aqua colour. i denied this and said i wanted white-on and mentioned the white light tape, as seen on the demo table.

the boss got a bit angry and said to the sales guy they're no longer doing such & such...[i didn't get the details]
i asked if can test it before buying or see a sample so i can confirm what i'm purchasing. the sales guy said he would like to do that but they no longer can according to his boss.

from that point in time, all sales are final with all the el stuff. buy now, test it later. in my case they would only offer store credit this one time only, in which i bought i couple 1 foot samples.

also, they can no longer show the light tape demos to customers since it's 'not exactly what they carry'. this isn't entirely correct but i think in their eyes it's a way to avoid future problems altogether.

i personally would've gone another route with this, showing samples of their stock.

however, after that mix up, you would have to buy samples in 1 foot increments to see what you're getting. the other, unnatural/gel colours are easier to tell. but the aqua/cyan/white tapes need to be double checked by the customer.

be prepared if you do go this route:
1. bring your own battery-powered inverter w/alligator clips & small pliers,
2. get a 1 foot sample w/crimp-on connectors
3. crimp the connectors & test it,
then once you know what you want
4. get the length you need/want
& remember all el sales are final.

side note:
the el tape they carry is split-electrode, so they would have that small line going down the middle. parallel electrode doesn't have this line.

only one guy handles the el stuff. obishawn mentioned the el guy hates me now after that, but i still continue to shop there for other things. lol. it's business. the other sales guys are cool but, again, just be careful if you go there and know what you're getting to avoid any mix ups.

Where's this store, btw? Los Angeles local? Anyone know of a good walk-in place near to LA/Orange County area?

i looked at the link when you first posted but got sidetracked & didn't respond. but thanks for sharing the url. i think i even posted on twitter about it awhile back. :)

i found it insightful and thought like the others do that the grid costume diagrams could've been shown in a higher res.

Because the lighted areas were custom printed shapes, I'd assume this is the "cheat" sheet. Looks like 5 unique silk-screens were created for all the sections.

I'd love better a version of these images too.

from what i can surmise, the overview chart with the two boxes:
-the left box shows the custom el pattern and where it is found on the costume (a map if you will)

-the right box shows info on the wiring harness and which part it connects to. note that the upper body portions are indicated to be connected to the c ring power and inverter. the lower half patterns are connected to a separate source.

i'm guessing it also shows what wire type or length is used to connect it to. this is useful because many of the wires were embedded into the foam latex molding when made, that one cannot just pull it out and swap them at will or immediately tell which wire does what or goes where.

the red highlights show which component it is pointing to out of the group of el patterns that are in the same immediate wiring harness.

it looks like the el patterns were organised into regional/sectional groups, enumerated for organisation, then wired accordingly. makes sense to me.

and yes, a full/higher res photo would be useful.

Does anyone have concept images like these for Quorra? I've seen one, but not a front/back like this... and it looked somewhat different from what was actually used on screen. I assume these images were made as references for the crew about how the costumes should look? It'd be great if there were one for Quorra.

Hello everyone, I'm rather new here but I've been following everyone's work here and its all fantastic. Just got underway with some friends and hopefully we'll have something interesting to contribute in the near future. Wish that I hadn't been so behind in the game with everything, but we're hoping to have something finished by the end of next month.

This thread has been my favorite read in this forum and got me to finally join up. The costumes produced so far look excellent and I am quite envious. I'd like to eventually take on one of these such as CLU's cloak or maybe a Black Guard, but the skill level required is a bit above me right now and the electrical work required puzzles me. I'll keep learning form you guys though. Keep it up, I can't wait to see some of these costumes at a convention sometime.

Oh and I had some fun in photoshop since I don't have the costume. Meet GIR, Generate Intelligence Rectifier.

This is semi-related, but I did a nerdy little photoshoot recently for a blog I'm starting. The outfit I was wearing consisted of different pieces from movies (can you guess what they are?) The rest of the outfit is irrelevant, but the pants are my Quorra leggings! Although they're from *coughcheapForever21cough* they have a great matte look and they move without too much restriction. I could jump around in those things with no problem. So gals, if you get a chance, see if there's any of these leggings at your local Forever 21. They're only $15!

Protip: when building your costume make sure its easy to get in and out of. if its not build a way.

Im building the base armor for lighting to go on to for a original costume. and omg its a work out getting in and out of that.

ill post pics when im somewhat satisfied.
