Tron Legacy Costume

I decided to make my suite out of neoprene, so far I have worked on the torso, since it it the most complicated piece. I made it totally out of paper, once the dimensions were correct to my body size, I took it apart into a 2 piece template. It was hard but I was actually able to wear it in paper form. The neoprene sheets came in, so I am about to start cutting it, wish me luck :)

I saw it at Target, I was not impressed. Looks HUGE and cheap. I'll be making my own.

no i know i have THAT baton, but that's Sam Flynn's baton.. his baton is 15" .. so you have to be at least 6'1" or taller for it to be the right size.

Quorra's is MUCH smaller.. i still have not decided what to do about it.

that what i though, but from what i gather its atleast the right lenght, cause sams should be the length of his thy
the problem is is that we dont have any good shots of Sams right side so we cant tell just how big its suppose to be.
ill probably get it for fun and referance then make a new one if need be

Quorras will need to be made no matter what cause hers is tiny

Sam Flynn is played by an actor that is taller than 6'1". Considering height to leg-length ratio that would mean that the baton has to be about 15" this is exactly the length of the store baton. if you are not that height I would consider something else.. or having a giant baton.. you choose

well like i said ill get one anyway, im almost 6 foot so its just about the right size on me

and even if you plan on making it id recomend getting it for a good 360 referance peice to work from you know

How thick is the neoprene?
What's the surface texture like?
Cost & location you purchased it from?

:)

Your pattern looks nice!

Thickness: 1/4 inch
Surface Texture: Smooth
Cost/Location: Free, My friend's uncle has a sheet metal shop, and has tons of it sitting around. But I have seen it up on Ebay.

Thanks, I worked hard on it.

Incredible!! Excellent pattern work there. Is neoprene that soft foam material usually comes in a dark color (black)? Just wanted to make sure I know what you are talking about. Another forum member here mentioned that they have neoprene at Joann's fabrics.

Thank you.

I have done my white glow paint from Risk Reactor tests and not satisfied with the results. I used 2 layers of Gesso white acrylic as a primer on the grey reflective tape I had left over, forget it, the grey tones of the reflective tape do not get covered up entirely and look patchy with even 3 layers of glow paint on top of that. FYI: all reflective properties of the tape will be gone.

Then I tried some white masking tape, painted it with one layer of gesso and then 8 layers of glow paint. When I charged the strip under light for a bit then too it to a dark room, it looked all blocthy and choppy meaning even after all those layers of glow paint, I was not getting a nice paint job glow effect. It was patchy, some dark patchiness showing up on my strip in between the glow effect. Basically looked like crap and doesn't glow for very long even after charging the strip for 30 mins. under light.

Now, I was using a brush with bristles it was an old used up brush from previous projects. I am hoping this is what is causing all that patchiness when I was painting my test strip. I am going to give the white masking tape one more test try but going to use a brand new foam brush instead, no bristles, and hope this will get rid of the patchy look of painting the glow paint on.

Yeah, but if you have grey reflective tape, please do not waste your time painting over it with the glow paint, it is too dark to saturate the primer and glow paint even with many layers. Cover it up with white masking tape 1st.

I will let everyone know my final results of testing with a foam brush this time. If this works, that means I will have to add white masking tape over my reflective grey tape on my costume.

If this doesn't work, then yeah, going with the EL WIRE. I almost kinda want to, sounds alot easier than dealing with adding 8 or more layers of glow paint to all that reflective tape on my costume. I have another idea to add to Daniel's EL WIRE work he did.

I WANT TO LIGHT UP!!!!!!!! ;D

Unfortunately I won't get my Quorra ready for Halloween ( BIG SAD FACE!!!! ) but I did get my small EL wire today! I ordered a bunch at 2.3 mm and a bunch at 5mm thickness... it's quite bright! I'm really happy with it. It's SUPER skinny but at least it lights up...and glued down to some white reflective tape should give a little more illusion. :D Overall, I'm confident the finished product will look good. And at least be super cool 'cause it will light up!!

The only thing I'm unhappy about with the EL wire is that when it's on, there's a REALLY high pitched hum that emits from it... considering I'll have a few of the battery packs combined into one ( no idea how to solder or combine them ), I might feel a little crazy by the end of the day whenever I wear it. XD

We're spending about $80 on EL for each men's costume. We're spending about $250 total. $50 on EL wire for the woman. One transformer for the entire body. One transformer for the disc. We bought the standard discs for price and availability. We put a 3ft length of EL wire on the disc. We bought the non-light up ones cause the light up discs don't stay on. You have to press a button and it times out eventually. What you see is the one light up men's complete leg front and back. Three sets. The woman's isn't finished and we'll have the armor/upper area done later tomorrow. Pool cue gloves are perfect!

Dear Annisse,
I almost had the same results as you did. I realized this paint works great only with pourous materials. The Fire red I got is oil based.( I don't know if water based like you got is any different.)I was angry after I put it on. It looked pinkish. I thought I had ruined it. After leaving one sleeve with the glow paint & turning off the light it did glow(Not like my test with the cloth or so I thought). It glowed But it looked dull white. At this point I put more layers of glow paint. Same result, but then the light bulb in my head went off. I'm using the wrong light to charge it! Regular light you'll get lame results. So I used the little UV flashlight they sent. And then Walla! Presto! The color came out. I'm using the little UV flashlight in the dark to do touch ups.Remember pourous materials only. I'm going to try to test this on the white vinyl like Daniel was using. I have a feeling The paint will work only on the outside of the white Vinyl. Good luck on trying to find white EL wire. My color red was sold out. Amazon does have a good supply. All the best!:rolleyes

Yes it is like foam, I have seen it in Black and Blue colors.

I wanted to show you guys how well EL wire can work, First I made the Pattern on transparency paper, then behind it I place the "EL WIRE" right on the edges so that it will be covered by black electrical tape in the end, and under it I have aluminum foil to reflect the light back. I used 1 layer of masking tape and one layer of a white shower curtain I bought at wall mart to diffuse the overall light and it worked, it creates a nice even glow. I hope that makes sense:cool

Nice effect! What thickness wire did you use?

I am very happy with the results.

This is the Wire diameter I am using: 2.3mm

Perfect! That's what I have too! And some 5mm for the thicker glow parts on Sam... it's amazing how much the reflective background spreads the light. Thank you so much for sharing!

I just did another test because I did not like that the foil makes that crinkly noise, I hate to be making that noise while I wear it.
I tried just plain white paper and it reflects the same amount of light, so I am switching to paper instead, maybe poster board since I have some lying around.
