Tron Legacy Costume

Now in regards to the white vinyl you used. Is this white vinyl fabric used to sew clothing? Just regular white vinyl fabric you purchase from a fabric store? Your white vinyl almost looks like a hard plastic.

Very good, you guys are gonna look SWEET! CONGRATS on all your hard work! :cool

Exactly! We're really worried about it breaking so we ordered several 1ft, 2ft, 3ft pieces and then wire them all together. That place EL Wire Pro is amazing. We just stripped all the wire connection and strung them together.

The white vinyl and the neoprene foam was at Joanns Fabrics. Super easy and I think we only need a yard of each for all three costumes.

i was studying the circuitry of the deluxe identity disc and found a spot that could pause the light pattern depending when it was shortcircuited -but that required creating some sort of timer or a manual switch you would press at a certain time to pause it.

on an easier idea, i created a usb-powered identity disc mod -which requires some soldering and components:
tron deluxe disc modification - a set on Flickr

basically it runs off of a mini usb cable plugged into my netbook. the toy part is still functional. one could potentially add a usb power to their suit on the back and maybe even a cable coming out of their wrist so that the disc *stays* lit while you're holding it. :)

This is awesome!!! I started painting with my glow paint today and realized I really need to do EL Wire instead, so I broke down and bought some. I decided to do 30ft and just "sew" it throughout the costume. We'll see what happens!

Yeah that is exactly what I think I am gonna wind up doing now myself. I didn't want to go with EL WIRE because it is not "screen accurate" ;) but I really like the effect Daniel got with his El WIRE and white vinyl after actually seeing it, it looks GOOD! now I think I may just try it out. May not do the neoprene, if I do, I will just be covering up the reflective job I did since it is superglued, no way will it come off without my entire comtume getting destroyed.

Wow - great EL wire work! Looking nice.

Annisse,

Can you tell me what diameter were the circles on your Quorra costume? Are they larger than 2"? I'm ordering reflective tape and wondering what thickness I'll need.

Thanks!

Hi there,

The diameter of the circles I made are about 2 and 1/4". I got 2" width reflective tape so going with a 3" tape would be better and more to play with for the curved shapes. I just drew on the tape with a pencil, for the curved shapes I needed, and just cut them out. Worked out great, so yeah go with a 3" width reflective tape if you are going down that route.

If you have any extra of those magnets left, I will take them off your hands ;) I totally need better magnets on my disk to hold it done and want to replace them.

Thanks!

LOL...I probably will :lol... so where did you get the EL wire? More importanly anyplace in LA sells panels? I need red.

WOW! what you have done is most excellent, just saw all your photos you posted with your EL WIRE attached. I am liking what you did.... ALOT!

I just got my white glow paint today, gonna try it and post my results. But so far, charged in the bottle it glows white bluish not green, which is perfect!

But I am really liking your EL WIRE and neoprene you used. Is neoprene the same as EVA FOAM? where did you get it from? and the only thing I am worried about going with the EL WIRE method, as you mentioned here, and I mentioned in many posts ago, buried in this thread, I have made costumes with EL WIRE and every place your body bends, any joints, elblows, knees, even moving around in the waist area, my EL WIRING broke somewhere in the connection. What I like what you have done here is made your EL WIRE design independent of the costume. If you do get a break somewhere, which I hope you do not, it will be slightly easier replacing the damaged wire since it is not stuck on the costume, and those neoprenes strip you made even looks accurate to the movie look of the costumes.

I too wanted to do that elevated, 3D look, on my Quorra costume as the strips of lights are floating on her suit and your idea does just that! BRAVO! :D

Dear Annisse, I finally put on the white paint on the upper body armour. This was time consuming. I'm glad I'm not doing Sam's costume. I still have not put on the glow paint. But I did test it. It's pretty awesome. The color really lights up.The White paint has to be really white for it to work right. I used 3 coats of white paint. White acrylic paint is easy to use & wash up with tap water. When you go to a dark room(Even minimal light), the effect is awesome. I believe a good combo with the EL wire boots and helmet will really work. Using the white vinyl with the el wire & the glow paint will make it even brighter. I'm going to get the vinyl tommorrow. I'll keep you posted. PS. You looked great in the front row at the SPIKE awards show. Great front row seats!

great! thanks so much for the info. I have a Joann's near me! Now, will painting my reflective tape white, either aryclic or even latex white paint primer, then adding a 2-4 coats of glow paint then adding the EL WIRE over all that give the same affect? Just wondering if I can use paint instead of the white viny to work with what I already have on my suit.

I ordered my EL WIRE at the time many moons ago from www.coolneon.com try that site or the one Daniel got from. I know of no place in LA that sells EL WIRE. There was one ages ago, same time I ordered mine but they are gone now.

Hey! sorry so I am confused, you painted 3 coats of white acrylic paint on your suit but have not painted the glow paint over your white yet?

So when you say the effect of the white, even in minimal light, is really awesome. Are you talking about the glow paint or the white paint? Since you said you didn't paint the glow paint over the white aryclic yet, this is where I am confused as to what exactly you did for the AWESOME glow effect. I wanna get that too ;)

Is your glow paint from Risk Reactor like mine? and how long did the glow last? I find it very hard to believe, even with many coats of glow paint over white, that their bright white glow paint can stay lite for 46 hours as their site claims. I guess I will find out 2nite. *crosses fingers I get at least 3-4 hours of glow time*

hehe thanks for noticing me at the Scream Awards... LOL! didn't expect anyone to comment on that here :$

Question - per the Risk Reactor website on how to use their Bright White Glow paint... "surface must be primed with a white pigmented primer"

since their glow paint is acrylic, does that mean I can use regular white acrylic paint?

They say white pigmented primer. I have looked in hobby craft stores and can find no white acrylic primer.

Maybe even the brightest white acrylic paint I can find would work? There is regular white and some called titanium white.

But does it have to be a PRIMER? that is what I am wondering. If I don't use a primer, I may be losing out on the true long lasting glow effect.

We're spending about $80 on EL for each men's costume. We're spending about $250 total. $50 on EL wire for the woman. One transformer for the entire body. One transformer for the disc. We bought the standard discs for price and availability. We put a 3ft length of EL wire on the disc. We bought the non-light up ones cause the light up discs don't stay on. You have to press a button and it times out eventually. What you see is the one light up men's complete leg front and back. Three sets. The woman's isn't finished and we'll have the armor/upper area done later tomorrow. Pool cue gloves are perfect!

Okay, so to clarify, you're using the white vinyl and attaching the EL wire to the top of that? Are you putting anything over the top of the EL wire?

I like the progress you've made thus far! Looking forward to seeing more!

Question - per the Risk Reactor website on how to use their Bright White Glow paint... "surface must be primed with a white pigmented primer"

I took that to mean you had to buy their G.I.Dark pigment powder in addition to their GID paint.

No idea for certain, but that's what I thought it meant. I suppose they just mean you need to
use white as a base to get the brightest result. Using a dark color might inhibit the brightness
somehow?

Sorry for not being clear. I tested the Glow Paint on another Black Fabric I had. I had already spilled some white paint on that one already. I put a few dabs on it of glow paint. Hey it's still glowing. I left the bottle under the light for about five hours. The paint is still glowing. I hope I put the just enough layers on top of it. But I'm satisfied it was a good test. My uper body armour I painted believe it or not is still wet. I hope to give this a real testing tomorrow. The black fabric soaked alot of white paint. I hope this can be photographed well. Good Luck!
:rolleyes

Yeah, I thought that too, but that just doesn't seem right.

I wrote a message asking on the website but never got a response. Oh well, guess I will just try 3 coats of acrylic then 3 more coats of glow paint. Should be done hopefully tomorrow if I stay up all night with a fan to dry each coat :p

Ahhhh I see. OK. so how many hours straight glow have you got so far?

Gotta take test pics to see how the glow effect will look when photographed. I am hoping photos will work well too with the glow paint. Yes, good luck too!

Just goto the Last Grenadier in Burbank. Its a gamer store with alot of paints for minatures and they have white primer there. Or perhaps a home depot.

I don't remember how many coats I put on the initial test. I stared to paint about 5 oclock this afternoon. I left it in my bedroom. As of right now 1:20 is's still going. The glow is pretty consistent. It does look better than 3M tape. I'm very happy with the results. :)
PS-Don't worry about the primer!

There's also Kit Kraft in Studio City. Pretty sure they have white primer too.

Coo! I will let you all know my results when I am done testing my glow paint.

i found that the best primer for glow paint is simple WHITE ACRYLIC paint.
Seal it off with a flexible sealer (mod podge or similar)
