Tron Legacy Costume

I so agree with you on the 'surviving a club night fun' in a NEOPRENE and RUBBER suit:thumbsup....that's INSTANT SUFFERING X 3(and not for me this time)! Reason why I'm making my suit more 'flexible/comfortable' in fabrics. I commend you on your 'TRON-inspired' creation there, gamer001 - It looks great! Kinda what the direction I'm going for right now. I think what I may pull off will be just as great-to-show presentation(?), but I'll be happy with it no matter and to just be part of the excitement of the movie coming out, I say all us TRON fans would enjoy being in 'The GRID' phenomenon be it a 'close-to-accurate' suit or UNIQUELY-made suit! :love

Thnx folks. It isn't TRON-true but I like going with this look as it is deeply TRON-inspired. Beside, I can't see surviving a club night in neoprene and rubber, December weather or not. :p Halloween 2011 is going to be one heck of a costume day for me now that I have this concept under control and acting as a basis for the next design.

Hiii I just joined the forums.

Quick question. How did you diffuse it? Frost spray paint? Shower curtain? Interfacing?
I really like your work. Everything is really complete and the finished product is looking real clean. You're gonna rooock next week B)

Thank you :)

I used plain old shower curtain from Bed Bath and Beyond. I didn't go the masking tape route to diiffuse my el wire simple because it wouldn't work for Quorra's suit design. She has that lighting on her arm. Keep moving your arm around the joint elbow area with masking tape I am sure it is going to look pretty yucky ;) after awhile and will probably fall apart. I just felt that way about any of the bendy areas of the body on my suit build so, shower curtain is still light enough and flexible to move without having all the cracking and rippling that masking tape will incur over time and will hopefully last longer.

Annisse, I'm a bit confused about Eddie's method: When you guys talk about using masking tape to anchor the EL wire to the posterboard, do you mean the cream colored light hold tape? Or are we really talking about clear packing tape? :confused I just want to make sure before I start laying my wire tomorrow.

Also, did you wrap the posterboard in shiny vinyl to achieve that reflection flow or are you just using the white of the posterboard itself to do it?

Thanks! :)

The way I did my El Wire light build is slightly different than Eddie's build, with only the materials I used, but the method is basically the same.

Since I am using latex. I backed my el wire diffused strip with white latex, glued onto my latex chest armor.

All my EL Wire strips are built using 3M Scotch tape I used to peel off the gel ink pen design I drew onto my latex. I think laid that piece of tape onto a piece of white pleather stretchy fabric I had. Then used Eddie's method of going around my entire strip twice, lining both sides, with the El Wire. taping it all down with the 3M Scoth tape, it is very strong that tape that is why I am using it, will keep my el wire in place when I move around. Then used the shower curtain to lay onto of that and tape that all around to diffuse it and there is my strip.

I then glued my strips down on their sides with latex strips I cut out to my latex armor. The glue I used it actually rubber cement. It is very strong and used to make latex clothing.

Thanks for the info! I guess I'm modding it a bit, probably because I didn't quite understand what he was getting at at first. I'm anchoring the EL to the posterboard directly with packing tape, and then going to diffuse it with the shower curtain. I'm thinking I might want to layer the curtain though, as I can still see a pretty good outline of the wire and not a healthy glow. Then again, it could just be my wire size and strength of luminescence.

To avoid hot spots of el wire be sure to use electrical tape slightly over the El wire. Meaning with your shower curtain on top of your already laid down el wire strip, put electrical tape over the wire if you don't you will see the wire straight thru the curtain still. This will give you an even glow through the shower curtain.

Just follow the picture instructions Eddie posted. I think they were somewhere in the 40 pages :p

Yeah, for that part of it I got some black gorilla tape to layer over it. I just don't think the Electrical tape will take the heavy punishment as its glue is not very strong. Hopefully it won't be too bad to work with.

And I checked back through the thread and it looks like Eddie's instructions are on Pages 25-27 and refinements on it are sprinkled throughout later pages on the thread (For those of you newbies who are playing the home game, the poster that we speak of is "eddieadryr").

Okkk....
Please forgive the crappy pics and sideways video:

Again, thnx Costumer, YenChih and all the others with kind words.

Costumer, I REALLY want to see your concept.. pics, pics!!

gams001, great design of the costume. A good reminder that not all programs are perfectly ordered and structured like the hero characters. The studs really give it a menacing look. The darth maul of the grid. I can't wait to see more designs like this.

** UPDATED **

Okkk....

Finally just sat down and wired the whole thing. All that remains to do is test the suit while being worn, clean up some ELWire areas where the wire is slightly off center line, use inviso UV paint on the helmet, cut the fingers off of the undersuit, and bundle the wires for the power system.

Tiny bit of back story..
A former Virus program, then called Viriax, it was captured by Flynn during the early days of his technology studies and creation of the prime systems of The Grid. Having a special insight for the use of any program, Flynn thought this program would have future value and had it rescripted some 600 years before the events of TRON:Legacy. Now a Black ICE program, used to combat invading programs and systems from outside The Grid, BlkICE is a game warrior that relies on close combat skills and Baton-Saber fighting. In overall suit construction, you can consider BlkICE a TRON-1.5 (TRON:Evolution?) version progam, mixing different styles from TRON and TRON:Legacy.

Wow folks.. such great praise from these, and so many other people, that have had me sitting here 'wishing I was as skilled as' in cos work. I do often find that what I lack in sewing/constructions skils, I will make up for in concept and unique style. :love

When I starting looking at this design I took my Halloween 2010 'Sith Lord' outfit and started building/restructuring it for the TRON party on Dec 18th. An idea kept creeping into my design, a need to look like something of an 'old school but now reconstructed' program that was not true to the first movie, hence the lycra bodysuit under the robe and armor that looks like a black series of TRON1 skin. I also glanced over the TRON2.0 & TRON:Evolution games and noticed the hooded characters of Gibbson, Abraxis, and a few others, leading my design down a road of 'Evil Virus meets Anti-Hero' program.

You have, all of you, given me a huge rush of pride knowing that my idea has generated exactly these thoughts and makes even the amazingly skilled people on this board pause to take the time and make notes/compliments.

THANK YOU ALL and here's to ALL OF OUR suits being the BEST OUT THERE for TRON:Legacy and beyond!!! (Halloween 2011 is going to be freaky and glowy) (y)thumbsup(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

When I saw your pictures the first thing I thought was that it WAS based on one of the Evolution game characters. :)

Also, if you complete the game you open up a series of 3D models of game characters. There's some "real clothing" style characters in there as well, all with a Tron "twist" to them. Very cool stuff!

Great job on the build!

Well, if you've seen the previews shown at ElecTRONica you'll see that that not everybody in the TRON world dresses like Sam & Quorra and that there are lots or "real clothing" with a Tron "twist" to them in the movie. You'll see a few of them in the scene where Sam gets picked up by a Recognizer, all of his fellow "programs" in that scene wear what looks pretty much like normal clothes except with glowing lines here and there on them.

That's right, Riceball - another reason I'm excited about the movie! :) I know I'm gonna see this more than once(or 10 times), because you'll never get a chance to see all different characters with different 'Tron-attire' all at once. Whether a LONG trench coat here, or a headpeice there, etc. - I even saw the rough concept of the 'End Of Line' waitress attire and OH WOW....where the lightlines going on HER! :love

I have been waiting for this film on multiple levels. Not just due to being a 12 year old fan since moment one when the first film released.. but also due to what I call Club-Reaction Movie Concepts.

What The Matrix did for Goth and Cyber club clothing styles a number of years ago, I feel Tron:Legacy has the potential to do the same, if not FAR more due to the endless possible variations of person lighting and clothing designs. I have already been raved over by a large number of 'club people' to whom I showed my video samples. With this plain reaction being so positive, I can imagine the Cos Play groups are going to go nutty for ComiCon 2011 and other events once the 17th brings us all face to face with TRON... again.

(OOGenre) I have missed TRON, but a person needs new experiences, new movies. They jar something deep inside, allowing us to grow. Without change & inspiration, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken and go make a TRON costume! (spoken with a horrific accent, must be the helmet causing the issue)

Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up/reminder Monday the 13th @ 7:00op is the screening for the Viral Campaign. Anyone else in LA going? I think I'll be cramming all weekend to get Daft Punk helmet and jacket done in time & I'll be there at 4 :)

Re: Tron Legacy Costume planning - MOVIE SPOILER ALERT(Castor, Sam & Others Costumes)

Again, this is a TRON: LEGACY MOVIE SPOILER'S ALERT! :eek

Here's a sneak-peek at a scene from the movie. If you look at it closely, you can see what exactly Riceball was posting about different TRON characters in 'regular clothes/attire' and with lighted parts in them - just like a REGULAR CLUB/BAR.
I feel the GOTH/Club/'ElecTRONica' world are really gonna be the TREND for next year! :lol:thumbsup
