Tron Legacy Costume

I think I may have just stumbled upon a boot perfect for Kevin Flynn's first appearance on the grid. It even has a raised circle over the ankle area that would be perfect for the lighting. They could also work great for any custom/civilian program. And at $129. they are totally affordable, and a sweet pair of boots when your costuming days are over.

Speaking of boots, I stumbled across these that would be the perfect girl boot.

The jacket was 280. I actually do track race motorycles so I already had it. Being a motorcyle jacket, its really thick leather. Just a heads up. Link Here
Thanks. I'll keep my eyes peeled for something more in my budget (just going for the pierced-leather motorcycle jacket look) as a substrate for EL insanity. ;)

Does anyone have any tips on where to get the wire I need if I want to segment my EL Panel from Glowhut? I figure I can manage connecting the wires, and possibly cutting the panel and taping it up so moisture doesn't get in it. I probably need about 10feet of what I assume to be copper wiring, 600v 105c. At least that's what it says on the connector cable.

I am going to use some speaker cable. I think as long as its not a very large awg (remember awg is inversely related to wire diameter) you should be fine.

I'm planning on getting some EL wire (also, GlowHut tape just arrived, yay!) and well, I don't think 2.2m wire is good enough, but the 5mm wire looks ridiculously thick :lol what would you guys recommend?

I know its killing me but I gotta do all planning now if this costume is gonna come out by Halloween!

More pics (with disc painted green)! Oh this was the best holiday ever, the looks on people faces and their reactions were worth the whole thing!! I'm so happy with the results :)

That looks great! I'm going to have to find a roof once I get my suit completed.

Hey programs, question. I just got my EL wire and tape from GlowHut. Very satisfied. Preterminated ends, well done, and the tape and wire are already blue then glow blue. So no pink w/o the glow!

Question is, whenever I turn the inverter they sent on, it has that extremely high pitched electrical squeel. You know the kind only young people can usually hear. But this is so loud and annoying I cant even stand to use the thing.

Is this common, or should I try and get a replacement?

That's from the oscillator in the switching power supply, necessary for making the high voltage needed to drive the EL sheets. Some squeal is normal, but sounds like yours is louder than it should be. Only way to know would be to compare it to another inverter.

Thnx for the quick reply. I wrapped it up under several layers and was able to muffle the squeel. I'll prolly just make some sort of sound deafining box for it.

From what I have read it is common for all the inverters, but it is possible to get some that make less noise. I am looking at coolneon.com for when I get my stuff. They have a driver called the pipsqueak that they say is less noisy, it can run 4-20 feet, but they say it is a bit dimmer when run with 9v, they recommend using the 12v (8 AA batteries) with it.

For those that have not yet tried or seen the 3M BLACK / Silver when flashed Reflective Tape:

From what I have heard, the loudness decreaes when you plug more in. And be sure you always have something plugged into the inverter.

Finished up my disc mod tonight for my Clu costume, though I still have to paint over the colored parts and the what I had to touch up with epoxy putty.

IMG_2089.jpg

Lights off. Rinzler front, Sam back, Flynn rings. The center ring was painted with transparent glass paint to get the right yellow/orange glow for Clu. It looks orange when off, but that's to offset the blue/white of the LEDs.

IMG_2092.jpg

The back. Two separate switches control the rings so I can have one lit, or both.

IMG_2093.jpg

Center lit, lights on. My camera doesn't photograph this well at all, so that's why it looks green.

IMG_2095.jpg

Center only lit.

litdisc.jpg

With both lit. Each ring is lit via a 60cm/60 LED SMD strip.

litdiscphotoshop.jpg

Same as above with the center photoshopped so the color is a bit more true to life.

Now that I have that done, I can start working on the helmet.

Just found this one on eBay for $166. That's pretty affordable and its an excellent substitute for the young Flynn jacket. Get a load of the sweet raised shoulder design. I might go with this one and forget about the NYC one.

Got an undershirt. Should I line the stitching with el wire or paint it with green glow paint to make it more of a flat green than a lime green?

I'm seeing all these cool jackets and boots people are posting but I could really use some help finding some pants. Teknic Supervent pants looks cool but waaay to pricey
