Tron Legacy Costume

Good news so are orders open now and do your kits now do both sides?

Yes, orders are now open! The Full Kit does illuminate both sides. It's a bit of extra work, but not too much. For those that want to attempt it, extra 'C' rings are available :thumbsup

ok I like this new disc a lot! I have a question though, is it possible to get a green inner glow by changing out the LEDs or would those pieces need to be cast in green? (or just put some green tint over the top as a hack)

All of my rings are cast in translucent white to be used with any color LED. I'm offering 3 standard LED color options, but for a little extra you can pick custom color LEDs. I like your tint idea though.

I'm going to have to experiment with this.

Those look fantastic so far! Forgive me if I'm being a dunce and not remembering, but where did you manage to get those shoes? I'm still scowering ebay for mine (you'd think they'd have something in a 7.5/8, but noooo....).

In other news, I was able to test out a white LED hoop on Monday. The illumination was amazing! There's no going back now. :p

I got them from ebay :) As mentioned in an earlier post they are Nine West Taildrop and the heels are definitely from the same mold(s) as used for the display costume. I was really disappointed when I saw the movie ones weren't the same- I think these just really fit in with the style more. I think partly because the cut out extends into the support under the heel- so they really do not look like normal shoes at all.

I am a size 7-7.5 here and if I was to wear these as are that's the size I'd have got, but with all the adjustments about to be performed a little extra space is quite good ;) And I really am going to pad these up inside.

Good news on the hoop :) What sort of surface does it have?

These are really cool. Everyone should own one.

That's where I first got the idea to try to make my own phosphors. She doesn't do it the way that the patent describes, I think she was just kind of figuring it out herself. The patent uses special equipment like a furnace, and probably fume hoods, given some of the chemicals they used. And yeah, you need more than the phosphors to make EL devices, it's just one of the more expensive/specialty parts. ITO film is the other specialty part. I think that will be harder to get, to be honest; I haven't found a single supplier that sells small quantities. I might see what I can do at my university, but I don't know how that will turn out.

Failing this, I hope the price of EL tape and sheets starts to drop dramatically, cause I really want to be able to get some soon :<

For a while I was looking into a process for screenprinting my own EL fabric, similar to Elastolite, but a lot of the prices and availability for the components just proved too much to make it feasible. :cry

WOW! Soulinertia how the heck did you get the back side to light up??? maybe I should just go check out your vid ;) very nice! I have my clear rings now, thanks to the Kevin disc but, may order one C-ring from you to attempt to light up the back side of my disc too.

Do the instructions come with your rings as to how to do the LED lighting in the disc?

Photos of the shoes on my feet:

Madly in love with them, and they really are very tall! A fair bit of work to make them into real shoes but with the base being solid and plastic if it less than with regular heels thank goodness ;)

Those shoes are SOOO awesome!!!! Great find girl! <3

Soulternia, those look awesome and that green is "exactly" what I'm looking for. Hopefully it's on the same duration as my EL tape side of things...

Wow this costume just got expensive... :(

I really like some of that concept art. There's some cool stuff there. Perhaps I'll draw some inspiration for my design from it. Right no I'll be using about 20 ft of EL wire for what I have worked out.

Loooove the concept art :) Sigh.

Okay so here is my right shoe pulled apart:

So the uppers are not going to be used at all- unless I can't find a new upper to put in whole in which case I'll tale a pattern and use the side supports layered between the lining and outer.
The insole came out whole, hooray! These were screwed in place which will help with securing the new upper in place. The toe end was just glued in so I will definitely have to use my mannequin as a last ;)
As you can see the sole is hollow, this is why you really need to be very careful with adapting whole wedges or regular heels. The struts help distribute weight and if any of them were knocked out it could cause the shoe to collapse.

The heel was easy to separate because it is plastic an so the glue came away with the sole and uppers rather than causing layers to tear.

One more adjustment I'll make is to replace the small plastic piece at the heel end with some rubber as it could be an issue on slippery surfaces. The rest of the bottom is covered in a rubber grip anyway :)

The layer of colour is very thin, it's mosly a semi-opaque off white so a sand will help when it comes to paint these.

Sigh. I found the maker of the insole ("Moontex") but no maker for the heel. It may be under the rubber grip or the foam toe cushion, neither of which I want to pull out.

Anyway a great option for those who are a little worried about making over shoes as the pieces come apart easily an so will be easy to go back together.

On both the helmet and the boots I'm thinking of having separate, smaller power supplies that can run the lights independently of the rest of the costume. I haven't done much testing of lighting methods yet, but I am considering a method of diffusing LEDs in a way that reduces bright spots. I would like to try hollowing out the heel or molding a replacement for it that can contain the necessary electronics. Fortunately the boots don't have a ton of EL on them, so the small length of EL tape + an independent power source might be all I need.

Yeah, I don't really have much knowledge of how to wire things, so this is going to be interesting, haha. xD The lights on the arms might be an issue too, as they're separate pieces in themselves. And I saw your website; I'm very interested to see how the helmet turns out!

Wow, Soulinertia! Those custom disks look awesome! I'm going out to get my disk today; there is a big sale on Tron items near where I live, and myself and my friends who are planning on making costumes as well are going to take full advantage of it. :-D

Yeah, those discs look pretty awesome. I'm currently in the process of modding mine so it'll have a lithium ion cell phone battery inside to light it with a port so it can be charged.

Also, what sort of EL wire would be recommended? High Bright?

it all depends on the color you are trying to match I think. EL wire by default as others have said is very fragile and prone to breaking with wear and tear. if you can, get tester strips of each and see which you like best.

If the EL wire is going to be lodged in the disc and not bent there shouldn't be too many concerns about breakage.

can you attach ballet flats???

Good point, and also not a lot will be needed. I was thinking more for the idea of keeping it matching whatever light method is used on the suit. If you aren't building a suit, going for white, or trying to get as bright as possible, go with an LED strip. I can't remember where I heard it but the EL wire doesn't emit very well from inside the disc and LEDs are much brighter than even the High bright EL Wire.

can you attach ballet flats???

Possibly :) It depends, actual ballet flats used for dancing are soft enough and stretchy enough that the shaped sole wouldn't be too much of an issue- they also have a drawstring top. they will be very soft in the toe and heel and may not support the weight of the sole very well.
If the ballet flats have solid sides and soles then no, the sides will buckle and the heel support collapse inwards.

So if I can't find a shoe with the same profile of heel to toe in the sole then I will take apart some shoes for the toe and heel support and build up from there. If anyone buys these some shoes (or similar) and need to do the same I'll post my step by step.
For anyone with he right shoe but wrong colour it is easy to recover them and be neat and tidy:

Not too in depth sorry but basically this shows my base shoe, the little repair and the final recovering of the base, all raw edges hidden :)

Mixed with this it shows how covers can look professional :) Though admittedly I have seen some tidy but unfinished covers made for a tv costume. ;)
