Building this kit up for an exercise in military weathering. But, keeping with my movie themed collection, I'd like to do Goose and Mav's Tomcat.
Anybody got the art on the tail of the flight school?
Thanks.

The new issue of FSM (the "Jumbo" issue) has a build up of Mav's Tomcat. There aren't a lot of shots of the completed jet, more step-by-step pics.
Pretty nice weathering on it though.

M5?
Screen caps would rock.. I can create what i need from that
the FSM article inspired me . . .

Just pulled out the DVD, and it looks like it's just the same logo that's on the squadron patches Maverick and Goose wear.

The studio workshop that the "mythbusters" work out of.

Around the time the movie came out, I think Revell released a box set that included 1/72 scale models of all three planes used in the film - the F-14, A4 and F5 (what they called a MIG), and it even came with the blue 'Top Gun' hat. The kit was accurate and included all the correct decals. Just FYI.

Yea, i've been hunting for that kit Mike, can't find it anywhere. But those screen caps are all i needed..... Whoo ho.
i'll post some pics after the Halloween rush is over
THanks guys.

Here's some updated shots of the main body. This big girl(1/32 Revell Germany) went together really easy, and upon inspiration from the recent FSM avaition issue, and watching the movie, these Tomcats (refitted A's probably) look to have had the snot whacked outta them, and have multiple paint schemes. So, I decided to start with the "im just sitting here on the deck of a salt water soaked carrier" paint patch work, and started with light aircraft grey, with an over coat of dark grey primer for "streaking," then did each panel line dark, then light over top, then attacked a few different panels with the lighter colors for the over and over paint applications they get. It's very severe, I know, and once glossed and decaled, she'll get a nice misting of light grey with a touch of light blue, and lastly a heavy spotting of clear flat. She's a big girl, and is at least 18 inches long. I gotta tell ya, I think I'm in love with this model. Enjoy, and happy turkey day.

Love it. Can't wait to see more. Decided on the aircraft number? Weren't they inconsistent in the film?

Love the "Turkey" reference. ;)

You know, another option from this movie (and one that could land in the Prop Forum, this one, or maybe even the Studio Scale Forum.) is the Revell kit build-up that rests on the end table in the scene where Maverick is up late, and chats with Goose. I think it was from the Pukin' Dogs squadron (VF-1 if I recall correctly)...

Hotshot,

One of my collateral duties as a Navy Pilot was aircraft division officer and included "airframes" and corrosion control. Using the facts the you've used flash and adding in scale effect, I wouldn't even worry about going with a mist coast. It looks about spot on and in scale from the pics.

If you're seeing something we're not in the flesh there, you do what you need to do. I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that it looks fine and realistic even if you may think it's aesthetically too contrasty.

Just my 2¢.

No pics today, but I've given here her decals and the number 104, and have added the top misting, and then a nice black wash for all the oil leaks these things get. I'm also looking foward to heading down to the musuem in Duelles(sp?) to the the final fligh F-14 that they recently wheeled in. Tonight, i've cleaed my building schedule for an interior canopy scratchbuildup, latches and all. My knuckles already hurt.

Pics. Hooray.

Cockpit canopy getting worked on, as the nose and the underside. i'm one'a those weird modelers that doesn't stay in one spot and kind jumps around on the model. Enjoy.

Thats looking stunning hotshot, "you can be my wingman anytime" whiney voice lol. Id even be tempted to take up the challenge and take a break from sci-fi. :thumbsup

Dude, looks awesome.
But I still can't look at one of those models without "A-Wing" running through my head.

Nice work.

I'm nearly positive I know why you say that, but fill in a lunkhead anyway.

You've got a PM. There's no way I'm going to be responsible for derailing this thread. ;)

Awesome work, once more.
