Thor: The Dark World thor costume *WIP*

chrishemsworthwieldshis.jpg
Just found this from another post and it helps a ton too because I was worried about the backside of the armor as well as the sides.

yep, thats one of the reference pics i used, heres another that helps with the sides 2700123-chris-hemsworth-works-thor-2-dark-world-hammer-bare-back-showing.jpg Ive left the back mostly unfinished for now, the sides are pretty simple, after you get the angle of that one diagonal strip figured out the rest falls into place.

One last question before I decide how to start this, what exactly did you use..? foam? because at michaels I can get different colored foam and thats about it.. they usually come in sizes like a standard sheet of paper and maybe a little bigger.

i used that foam your talking about but i glued a layer of fake leather / vinyl to the top of it. The vinyl wasnt thick enough to look like real leather so thats what i used the foam for, heres a pic of the underside 1121130222-00.jpg. i did use pieces larger than notebook paper for mine.

on another note, ive been working on the scale sleeves, heres a pic with the muscle suit i put together 1119131733-00.jpg ive now got quilted fabric glued over both sleeves and am cutting out the scales to put on them. The scales will be a combination of shiny metallic duct tape, and craft foam covered with metallic counter paper

heres one of the sleeves pretty much done

the scales look pretty realistically metal individually, the problem is they dont flex like the molded sleeves in the film do and tend to bunch in odd ways around the lower shoulder and armpit. they do also wrinkle, which i figured on and i plan to 'tarnish up' those areas a little more than others when i get to that part.

peeling is a little bit of an issue, but ill go through with some super glue and tack down the trouble areas

they also pinch around the inside of the elbow giving me armor bites that look like track marks...

not as of yet, i could get better pictures of the chest and arm patterns set up next to rulers, ill try to get that done after christmas

Now that thor is available to buy/rent digitally im going to see if i can get some better reference for the rondels on the armor. If anybody can get some decent HD screen caps of the patterns on them id love to see them. Hopefully tommorow ill be able to get to the nearest hobby lobby (a bit of a drive) and get the stuff i need to finish up on thor

just got in my thor trading card with a piece of the fabric from his cape, turns out i was pretty dang close on the color of fabric i was using before
0209140032-01.jpgit is, however, a bedsheet, and im not sure im going to use it because im paranoid it will be painfully obvious that its a bedsheet, even with two layers. Also i finally found a really good reference pic of the Rondels on Thor's armor
thingie.jpgso i can get to working on those pretty soon, i'm thinking sculpey, maybe ill make a cast of them

I just finished wearing the costume to planet comicon, sorry i didnt share any more updates but i had to move to a new apartment AND finish the costume in the last month, so things got hairy, heres a picture of what it looked like before i walked out on the floor

I got a lot of positive attention for the costume, more than anything else ive built. I think this was mostly due to the sleeves, unfortunately they were also the biggest weakness of the costume because they started peeling pretty badly, the legs were even worse. I would say the contact paper and craft foam method of building these sleeves is not viable. It might work with cybernetic arms like the Winter Soldier or Cable that have fewer tiny pieces, but im already thinking of different methods of building to make a replacement for the next con

So i fixed the problem with the sleeves, did some weathering on the other metal pieces on the armor, wore it to Denver Comic Con a little over a week ago, and won first place for craftsmanship in the intermediate catagory

Ive also finally found a picture of Thor's Costume for Avengers 2 and it looks like its a match for the Dark World costume. At this point im actually thinking about taking the costume apart and rebuilding it with better materials

What was your final thoughts on your sleeves and the mail? How did they last throughout the day wearing them? They look really good in pics.... just wondering what they looked like in person. I'm about to begin working on my husband's costume and I'm trying to gather the best techniques! :)

They still looked pretty good in person, they held up to wear and tear really well. Im thinking about making a new set to fix a couple of issues, the first is mostly to build a better muscle suit underneath them, the second would be dealing with the visible difference between the craft foam scales and the fabric paint scales, the fabric paint ones do look a little recessed, and since they were on the same spot as previous scales they looked a little rough, this should be fixed by starting from scratch though.

I would love to see updated pics of the sleeves if you finish them! My husband ended up switching his costume to Magneto at the last minute (beyond frustrating, when I'd done so much research on this one! lol) but I'm bookmarking all of this stuff for next time. I'm still really interested in your progress, because your mail/sleeves are the best I've seen on here. :)

ive started working on those, ive bought some of the insulation for pipes for the musclesuit, it might be a month or two before i can really get into it
