The World's End - Gary King costume. Sources, images, ideas?

Hi folks,

I'm beginning to put together a Gary King costume from 'The World's End', so I'm looking for any sources for any of the stuff he wears in the movie.

I understand that the raincoat he wears was a one-off, made by the costume designer for the film, so that's going to be tricky.

Each of the following items has an authenticity rating as follows:

A: This item is either an exact copy of the item, or is indistinguishable from it.
B. This item is very close in terms of shape and size, but is not an absolutely perfect match in terms of detail.
C: This item is a fair representation of the movie prop/costume item.
D. This item will do, but hopefully we can find a better match.
E. This item is nowhere near close, but there is either nothing else currently available, or the available options are much more expensive.

In terms of off-the-rack items, these are the best matches the community has been able to find so far:

Black -rimmed Aviator Sunglasses:
I don't know which of these is best. Amazon is pretty good for returns, so that's always an option.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007QP6T7U/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - I own these. Nice dark tint, blue grey color. To me they look exactly like Gary King's sunglasses, except the tint is more blue, though it's hardly noticeable. They are quite heavy so for those of us who have problems with glasses slipping down our noses, maybe the ones below may be a better buy. Nevertheless - rating B
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CQFOPPI/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 the plastic lenses make these a lighter option, but the cross-section at the temples is slightly different - rating C
Amazon.com: Original Classic Metal Large Aviator Sunglasses - Nickel Silver Frame(58mm): Shoes I bought these and am returning them, so I have seen them up close - nice dark tint, greenish color lens, just like the ones shown in the movie stills. However, the bridge is a bit too high on these- rating C

Eye of Horus pendant on a leather choker necklace:
http://egyptiangiftshop.net/Egyptian-Gifts/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66_89&products_id=624 - the 'medium' sized option seems about the right size and a good shape. - rating B
Amazon.com: Egyptian Jewelry Silver Eye of Horus Udjat Pendant: Jewelry - may be a bit too big - rating C
Amazon.com: Black 2mm Leather Cord Necklace Choker Sterling Silver Clasp (20 Inches): Jewelry - rating B

Kneeling Isis and Ankh pendant on a dogtag necklace:
I've found a good example of the Isis charm and the ankh here - both are a bit smaller than an inch, so are about the right size judging by the photos I've seen:
https://www.silverenchantments.com/Sterling-Silver-Isis-Charm_p_4453.html - rating B
https://www.silverenchantments.com/Sterling-Silver-Ankh-Charm-Egyptian_p_4713.html - rating B
Amazon.com: 30 In. Stainless Steel Necklace, Military Dog Tag Ball Chain, 2.4mm #3 bead: Everything Else - rating A

Sisters of Mercy long-sleeved T-shirt with thumb holes:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=111221149227. This is the one with the 1985 date on it - this appears to be what Gary King wears in the movie. Rating A
http://www.redbubble.com/people/phe...ource=google&gclid=CO6VlauzzrkCFcdxQgod1CgA0A. This one doesn't have the date. Choose the long sleeved T-shirt option - also, you will have to add the thumb holes yourself as this one does not have them (I just got it in the mail and I've checked). - rating B

Western Snap Shirt in black:
This is the only black snap shirt I've been able to find that's readily available. It has some small differences in terms of the construction of the pockets, but it's very close: Wrangler Wrangler Western Snap Shirt - Long Sleeve Solid Broadcloth Men - rating B

Overcoat:
A very close match - a dark grey, wool overcoat - is the German Bundeswehr Mantel Heer (Post-WW2 Army Greatcoat). It's here ( http://www.ebay.de/itm/181145433869?var=480271923435&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 ) in all standard sizes. This seller (Adisto) will ship to the US and he says the cost will be €20 (that's about $30 and I'm assuming that's surface mail). - rating C (if it can be dyed darker grey or black it gets a B rating).

The same coat is also here: Original Bundeswehr Mantel Heer zweireihig Grau ihre Grösse | eBay. For those who don't speak German, 'brustumfang' means 'chest measurement' (in cm) and körpergrösse means 'body size' (I think that means height - also cm). However, I've spoken with this seller and he will not ship to the USA, so this one is for Europeans only. 'Auf die beobachtungsliste' means 'move to watch list' - if you have an eBay account, click on that button, then you can go to the English language eBay site and it will appear in your watch list. - rating C (again, if it can be dyed darker grey or black it gets a B rating).

Another close match is the dark blue German Bundeswehr Luftwaffe Mantel (Post-WW2 Air Force overcoat): http://www.ebay.com/itm/180832907178?var=480072819938&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649. Again, for those who don't speak German, eBay members can sign in with their regular eBay account and it works just the same as English language versions. 'Grösse' means 'size' and 'sofortkaufen' means 'buy now'. I emailed the seller and he says the coat can be shipped to the USA for €45 (that's about $60 - not sure what shipping method that is). - rating C (again, if it can be dyed darker grey or black it gets a B rating).

I believe this is the exact same coat offered at Amazon.co.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0041HA756/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2QRJ5L8JDIGD5 , though it's hard to tell if this is the blue one or the grey one (the listing says grey, but the images show both blue and grey). For those of us who live in the US, Amazon's shipping price on this item will make you choke, but I have spoken with a representative from the company and they are very responsive. They are apparently willing to halve the shipping cost if you ask (not sure what that's all about), but it would come in the shape of a refund once the order is placed. - rating C (again, if it can be dyed darker grey or black it gets a B rating).

Same here (although this is being sold as a "WW2 style" coat, it's the same pattern): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170901994472?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 - rating C (again, if it can be dyed darker grey or black it gets a B rating).

Brass domed buttons for the coat:
These appear to be around 3/4", chrome-plated brass dome-shaped buttons, very worn so that the brass is showing in places.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/280729248707?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 - these are antique brass buttons - rating D

Black slim-fit Jeans:
For older Gary King, I've studied the Blu-Ray, and found that the jeans used in the movie are black Levi's with around a 15 1/2" leg opening and a tan color "size patch" at the back. I have yet to find any jeans currently available that match perfectly. I need to do more study of the DVD to figure out which style of Levis he uses. My best guess currently is the 511, but there are no 511s with a tan patch, so it's anyone's guess.
For young Gary, here are the ones I bought: Levi's 511™ Slim Fit Jeans - Rigid Dragon - Jeans. These are not black, but very very dark blue, so good for a young Gary King costume. They're also available (sometimes for less) at Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004061V4O/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. - rating B

Note that whatever jeans you buy, you'll want a slimmer fit with a leg opening of 14 1/2" to 15 1/2" - this will give the right look where the jeans meet the boot. Young Gary King wears a very dark blue jean (you can tell by the contrasting inner color) whereas old Gary King wears a true black jean (no contrasting inner color).

Western style Leather Belt:
Baron Gold Round Rope Edge Conchos Western Leather Belt (the movie version is close to this, but has at least three slotted conchos like this: ( http://www.blackhorseleather.com/sterlingslotted.jpg ) on the belt.. - rating B

Dr. Martens black 1460 Boot:
For the purist, if Gary King were a real person, since he apparently kept all his old clothes around for 20 years, he would have probably worn what are now known as 'Vintage Dr. Martens 1460s' http://www.dmusastore.com/p-2341-vintage-1460.aspx. These are what Doc Martens made prior to April 2003, when the company nearly went bankrupt and they shipped production to China. Fortunately, the company bounced back and they now make the original pattern Doc Martens in the original factory in England, but at $200 a pair, they might be a bit much for those of us on a budget. - rating depends on whether historical accuracy or movie accuracy is most important - for historical accuracy, this gets an A, for movie accuracy it gets a B.
For the rest of us, regular Dr. Martens made in the company's Chinese factories are available for $80 cheaper: Dr Martens 1460 BLACK SMOOTH - Doc Martens Boots and Shoes. I have two pairs of Chinese Doc Martens boots - Chinese products often have a bad reputation, but these are very good quality boots and very comfortable. - rating depends on whether historical accuracy or movie accuracy is most important - for historical accuracy, this gets a B, for movie accuracy it gets an A.

Rings:
Left hand:
Middle finger: black onyx signet ring. Found a pretty good and inexpensive match: http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Stain...XMQX2/ref=pd_luc_sbs_01_02_t_lh?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - rating B
Ring finger: open skull and bone ring http://www.thegreatfroglondon.com/product/double-headed-open-band/. This is the exact ring Gary King wears in the film (but it's pricey). - rating A
Budget alternative: http://www.ebay.com/itm/316L-Stainless-Steel-Double-Skulls-Open-Hoop-Men-Biker-Ring-1oF-/190921215733?roken=HqEkGv - looks good, but the heads are the opposite way around - rating D
Right hand
Middle finger: 4 skulls ring http://www.thegreatfroglondon.com/product/large-4-skull-ring/. This is the exact ring Gary King wears in the film (but ouch! It's very pricey). - rating A
Budget alternative: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007Q3B6QQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1KW9HBEG1KX1Y - rating D
Ring finger: bat ring: http://www.silvershake.com/Product/...welry-Sterling_Silver/bat.aspx?&sortid=4&Pg=1 (pretty sure this is the exact right one) - rating A
Pinky: Star of David ring: http://www.etsy.com/listing/160105770/david-silver-star-ring-size-magen-israel?ref=shop_home_feat If this is not the exact same ring, it's pretty close, although two members find it to be a bit small. - rating B
Alternatively, http://www.amazon.com/Sterling-Silv...956&sr=1-1&keywords=star+of+david+ring+silver - this one is pretty close too. - rating B

Earring
Helix piercing, upper rear edge of left ear. Possibly a captive bead ring, but may be a fake ring as shown here:
http://www.amazon.com/Non-Pierced-Silver-Hoops-Clip-Earrings-Fake-Ring-Fake/dp/B006F2SZOU/ref=pd_sim_a_7

Wristband
For those going for the complete look, you'd need some bandages for the wrists, and a hospital bracelet. Here's the cheapest site I've found for hospital type bracelets: http://www.wristbands.com/450p-superband-big-wristbands.html

Tattoo
Gary King has a Sisters of Mercy tattoo on his chest. Custom temporary tattoos are hideously expensive, but if you have artistic or drafting skills there is a way to do it yourself: http://www.wikihow.com/Create-Your-Own-Temporary-Tattoo

Here's the tattoo template - it's in grey because you'll want to see the difference when over-inking in black. Also, image is reversed so that the transfer is the right way around:

Tattoo.png

Nokia 6310i mobile phone
Appears to be the greyish blue one, not the gold or bronze one.

'Out of Order' sign
Gary wears it around his neck at one point. I made a copy of it - it's in the 'World's End Map' thread here: http://www.therpf.com/f40/worlds-end-map-191841/

Does anyone have any details of Gary's rings? He seems to be wearing a few, but I can't make out any of the details.

That's fantastic! Thanks. I've found the place that sells the rings (unfortunately they aren't cheap) and updated the OP.

That's awesome! Good work on finding the rings. I'll be going close enough I think.

There's a much better t-shirt on redbubble:

"The World's End / The Sisters Of Mercy" T-Shirts & Hoodies by PheromoneFiend | Redbubble

I already asked and it has the correct cuffs on the sleeves. I'll be ordering it when I get around to upgrading my costume.

I'd hold off on the western shirt, his has a yoke on the front, doesn't it? And I could be mistaken, but when he puts his feet up on the couch at Martin Freeman's showing, aren't his boots a shorter style? Oh, and the charms on the chain necklace are the ankh and that dove thing, not sure what it's called.

Also, have you found a source for the bracelet he wears for the latter part of the movie? I couldn't source one. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to drop any spoilers in the thread.

I think I'll be going 'close enough' on the rings too. $400 for a set of 4 rings is about $200 more than I usually like to spend on an entire outfit., LOL.

Regarding the shirt, good link. I thought it led to a short sleeved T at first, but you just choose a long sleeved T in the options. But I don't think the movie version had the 'Sisters of Mercy' text at the top (?).

I didn't notice a yoke on the shirt, but you may be right. Anyway, I'm probably going to hold off on a lot of this stuff until I can get a DVD of the film, because I'm a total realism geek. On the other hand, if it's not easy to find or make, I'm happy with 'close enough'.

All I know about the boots is that they are said in movie reviews to be Doc Martens. I have yet to see an image that confirms or refutes this.

I don't remember the bracelet at all from the film.

Either way, I'll try to keep the first post updated with any new ideas.

You have to select the long sleeve option from the drop-down menu.

I'm waiting for the DVD/BR as well. Actually looking at that western shirt again I see that it does have a front Yoke, just higher up. I can't see what Gary's shirt has in that area, but it looks like a decent match. The one difference I can see is that his shirt has a seam on each pocket:

http://www.hdwallpapers.in/walls/the_worlds_end_movie-wide.jpg

And yea, they were definitely DM's. You get a good look in the scene I mentioned, and Martin Freeman's character says they're DM's as well.

Yeah. Didn't notice that seam before.

You're right on the SoM shirt too - it does have the text in the poster. Can't believe I missed that. Your link is the better option - so I've changed it in the OP.

the charms on the chain necklace are the ankh and that dove thing, not sure what it's called.

The bird is Horus. I think it's supposed to be a hawk or an eagle, but my knowledge of Egyptian mythology is spotty at best [ed. I just looked it up - it's supposed to be a falcon]. The earrings I found for it are approximately the right size, but we'd have to saw through the bottom of the ankh. I did find pendants, but they were all too big. The earrings will (I think) work well - and they're relatively cheap.

I'm going off all the images I can find online. The earrings are a bit off in terms of shape. I looked through hundreds of pendants, charms and earrings and the problem I was finding was that I had a choice - the items I was finding were either way too big or a bit off in shape. I figured getting the size right was probably more important than the shape.

The Eye of Horus pendant is pretty much spot on though, I reckon.

I, too, am doing Gary for Halloween this year. Have you discovered what fingers he wears each ring on?

He appears to be wearing 5 rings altogether. Here are the best photos I can find (right click on the images and click on them again to zoom in to see them full size):

simon-pegg-the-worlds-end.jpg

TWE.ScoreCover.8.20.13.jpg

Here's what he seems to be wearing:

Left hand
Middle Finger: Black signet ring - definite.
Ring Finger: Skulls & Bones ring - definite.

Right Hand
Middle Finger: 4 Skulls ring - definite.
Ring Finger: Winged Skull & Crossed Bones ring - definite
Pinky: ? - not just a plain band, but can't see the detail. Possibly a plain single skull?

Thank you! I've really been wanting to do this, as well.

It had been bugging the heck out of me that I couldn't identify the lower pendent exactly, because it looked so familiar, and we'll probably all have to wait for the blu-ray to be sure, but given Gary's obsession with late 80's/early 90s goth and alternative music, and based on the picture Risu found, I'm betting the pendent on the lower chain is from the Gene Love's Jezebel single "Gorgeous", circa 1987.

Click on the image here http://www.discogs.com/Gene-Loves-Jezebel-Gorgeous/release/822846
for a larger view, then do the same with Risu's picture, http://www.geeksofdoom.com/GoD/img/2013/08/2013-08-12-the_worlds_end_still_02.jpg , and compare.

There also seems to be an ankh on the same chain, which could be more GLJ kitsch, given their use of Egyptian imagery.

And as a somebody mentioned, the pendant on the upper chain is an Eye of Horus, which appears on the cover of the Sister of Mercy album "Vision Thing", circa 1990.

And finally, variations of the Sister's of Mercy logo on the t-shirt appear on the album covers of their two compilations, "Some Girls Wander by Mistake", circa 1992, and "A Slight Case of Overbombing", circa 1993, as well as tons of other Sister's of Mercy merch. Origin discussed here: '80s gothic rock: 80's goth bands logos pt.II (Sisters of Mercy)

And of course his theme song is Loaded, by Primal Scream, circa 1990. So it all goes together to form a theme, and it fits with Gary's attempt to recapture that period of his life.

That's great info. Thanks! It totally makes sense that these are all '80s-'90s-music-related. Amazing that the filmmakers put so much effort into these tiny details. But I guess it's not so surprising, given that it's an Edgar Wright film.

The second pendent on the ankh chain is a "kneeling Isis" pendant, which is what GLJ use in their logo. There are a bunch of variations out there, so you'll have to use your Google-fu. Here's one...

ClickHandler.ashx

Many are like this, with the chain attaching to the wingtips. Harder to find ones with the chain going through a link attached to the sun disk she's holding up...

--Jonah

Thanks for the info. I can now see from this photo that you're right. Isis seems to be kneeling with her knees facing to the left as you look at the image.

There does seem to be the occasional eBay offering of this kind of Isis pendant:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=Egyptian+SIlver+Goddess+ISIS+pendant&_osacat=0&_fln=1&LH_Complete=1&_itemId=320301552167&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xkneeling+ISIS+pendant&_nkw=kneeling+ISIS+pendant&_sacat=0&_from=R40

I've found a good example of the Isis charm and the ankh here - both are a bit smaller than an inch, so are about the right size judging by the photo above:
