I always wanted to join the RPF but I never felt I had anything worth sharing.
I started a love affair with POTC when the first film was in theatres and eventually found my way to the Barbossa fanatics when I bought his pendant on a whim from our Renfaire's $10 knife booth. (Remember when you could buy things at events for $10?)
How it started in 2010 when I was a wee bairn of 22. I truly wish I had more pictures of this because I love the comparison to what I have now.
Poor as hell, no access to good quality materials, no access to SA buckles etc.
I sculpted poor deranged little Jack the Monkey here out of Crayola airdry clay and covered a $10 plastic flintlock with woodfiller and refinished. Had a Cosplay.com wig (Oh the olden days!)
I sat an eyeballed and embroidered hundreds of french knots over $3 a yard Hancock fabrics suede that took up most of my paycheck at the time.
I couldn't even afford Pleaser pirate boots, so I had a pair of Justin workboots that I added a cuff to with the world's cheapest pigskin. They kept slipping down and I eventually yeeted them out of embarrassment.
I lucked out when in an America's Thrift store one day and found a set of curtains (Still on the rod) that worked great for the waistcoat.
Since then, as an older man and an adult with an Adult Job and Adult Money, I've gotten to upgrade almost the whole thing.
I still have the original Baldric, which was Baby's First eBay purchase!
I apologise for any cat hair; I have double digit cats and two dogs; it tends to be unavoidable.
Everything not purchased was handmade by me, namely the coat, which I spent two weeks embroidering french knots upon the fabric for.
My happiest purchases have to be the ring and the CABoots SA Barbossa Boots which are some of the most comfortable boots I own. (And they better be for the cost!) I consider myself incredibly privileged to be able to have purchased these; especially having attempted constructing my own twice.
CABoots is worth every penny; they were communicative and great as their sizing can be a little wonky. I erred on the side of caution as I can wear anything from a Men's 9.5 to an 11 and ended up with a great pair of boots that are going to last me probably forever.
I've searched for years for an at least CLOSE replica of Hector's lion ring and to my surprise, an Etsy seller happened to have a damn close replica. (Captain Hector Barbossa Ring, Solid 925 Sterling Silver Ring, NATURAL Black ONYX Gemstone, the Pirates of the Caribbean Ring, Gift for Him - Etsy)
Unfortunately these buttons are resin copies of the originals. I found them on eBay about ten years ago and spent a stupid amount of money on them.
It is my greatest hope that I will be able to learn how to metal cast in the near future, create a mould from these, and get them cast in actual metal.
Both SA hat buckles and belt buckles came from a no longer active eBayer and I consider myself extraordinarily lucky to have obtained them.
Like a typical millennial, my first bonus at my Real Adult Job, I frittered it away on bucket list items, including this resin replica of Hector's flintlock. Overall it is a pretty rough casting. I understand it was cast from the park ride's prop. I'm debating purchasing one of the flintlock mod kits that are available, but overall this does the trick and it's fine for now.
And now for some purely self-indulgent pics.
A few years ago, my wife surprised me with a photoshoot with our friend and wedding photographer (If you are in the Atlanta area and you are nerdy/need an amazing cosplay photographer I cannot recommend her enough: Atlanta Wedding Photographer | Raven Shutley Studios)
I made the CotBP Red Gown for my wife, as she is a pretty princess and not one who likes wearing armor, despite my pleading to do 'At World's End' Elizabeth.
At present, I plan on updating my sash, doing more distressing overall, potentially learning how to cast pewter and bronze to obtain SA metal coat buttons and at least the closest amalgamation of waistcoat buttons I can, adding more feathers to my hat (I have just discovered the dark feathers on the hat are dark blue, not black as I thought). I have new trouser fabric coming, as my costume designer dad found pictures from a POTC museum exhibit showing that Barbossa's britches are made of a pinwale corduroy rather than the linen my original britches are constructed from.
Hair is a fantastic wig I stumbled upon at a thrift store.
Facial hair in the pictures is all lace costume beards and moustaches. I suffer from patchy beard syndrome (LOL) and maybe in five years I'll actually be able to grow enough to have "that scraggly beard". It's genetic!
If I had all the money in the world, I'd definitely find a better option for Jack the Monkey. Potentially a soft-mount taxidermy or a felted doll, but needs must and I think he's rather cute. He is a Hansa plush toy for which I made the clothes.
If anyone has a good resource for Barbossa's waistcoat buttons, I'd be eternally grateful. Even one would be amazing!
Additionally, I have built a Ragetti costume for my best mate and I'm the process of building a Jack for another mate of mine.
