The Video Game Thread - anything and everything...

That sounds like bad game design to be honest. Based mainly from my experience with Zelda games but Zelda likes to have these puzzle bosses during the N64/Gamecube era where bosses required using the item you obtained in the dungeon in some way to get the boss vulnerable. I think one thing Zelda does well in this regard is that it "teaches" the player how to use the item and the method of getting the boss to expose its weakpoint uses a method similar to how that item is used. Also helps that Zelda has a history of having "puzzle" bosses which means the player is prepared with that mindset while Sonic traditionally is a bit more straight-forward (please correct me if Im wrong in that regard. Not saying sonic bosses are easy but they require more knowing where Robotnik's mech's hurt boxes and attacks are and timing your jumps and hits to avoid attacks and damage robotnik).

Also, putting the target behind the boss is a dick move, not going to lie. Im assuming the boss turns towards you while fighting which means getting behind them is already difficult. Were there enemies that required you to hit them from behind? Not having to change targets until now also seems like poor game design to suddenly introduce a mechanic you havent used until then.
It was a really bad design.
The older Sonic games were find the hit box, for the most part. The newer 3D ones were a mic of that, along with sometimes waiting through a sequence, mostly just staying alive until that hit box opened up.
Some have had puzzle like ideas where you had to figure out what to do, but Sonic Frontiers is kinda trying to be a Zelda game, but instead of new items you get, instead, you learn abilities for him.
Some are up to the player to ever use at all, like combos while fighting. You could go through the whole base game without even needing to change targets.
So heres a screen cap, and I added thr yellow arrows.
The game seems to ALWAYS want to target the head, but you have to hit the pink cord part first. And then the other target once life is drained. AND THEN hold triangle, which the game also never tells you to do, at all.
It could be done fighting normal enemies as part of a combo hit, but this was the only place where you HAD to do it.
Hopefully Sega learns from this.
I see the screen has tips. I realize, I had it turned off for my playthrough.

Also 29th Anniversary of Chrono Trigger today.
I still question that date of Chrono Trigger, between the 11th or 21st....mainly because of this old screen shot from 1995, looking more like the 21st. Possibly because it was released in Japan on March 11th, somewhere along the line, people got that confused for August 11th.

Anyways, made this...little Back to the Future Chrono Trigger crossover.

I've been playing Marvel's Midnight Suns for the last week or so. I really dig this game! I was a little wary starting because even though it was made by the same guys who made the newer XCOM games, it plays differently. I'm still getting the hang of the cards and how to use them. My only minor complaint is the hippie dippy "I love you! No, I love you!" friendship thing in this. I think Tony Stark and Dr. Strange, at least the movie versions would hear that and go "F--- this, I'm out."

In Chrono Trigger, after the gang defeated Lavos and everyone went back to their own times, Ayla found out that a few surviving reptites were still around. After rounding them all up, she created the worlds first theme park.

For those who use MSFlight Simulator 2020, I highly recommend getting the Map Enhancement Mod. It streams the latest updated Bing satellite imagery to the game, giving current views instead of pulling from the 2020 images. It feel like it greatly enhances the immersion:

OK RPF I need your suggestions!
Finished Jedi Survivor but on Koboh I'm at 99.8% finished

Is there any small items that took you a while to find you can share? Looking around fir this .2% is driving me nuts!

You unlock all the icons on the map which shows you where everything is. Unless you didnt fully unlock a cave or something

Yes, l did unlock all map icons (the seeds would have been a nightmare w/o the map!)
There are a few green icons (wall break) that seem to reapawn, but as far as l can tell there isn't anything left to pick up.

After playing some Star Wars Outlaws, all I can say is wait awhile before trying it. It is everything said it would be, generic ubisoft theme park game with nothing that captures the feeling of star wars 90% of the time. From a technical standpoint the player movement, combat is sloppy. The speederbike is the worst implementation of a vehicles control system I've ever seen in a big budget AAA game and makes exploration horrific.

Looking at some leaked info on the PS5 Pro which is speculatively set to be formally announced in the next two weeks.

Some news sites have said their will be two Pro SKU's. One with and one without a disc drive. Others have said no disc drive but that it will support the attachable external disc drive Sony already offers.

I'm completely done with new SW unless they do a Republic Commando 2, new Dark Forces/Jedi Knight, Empire At War, etc. Even then I doubt their writing abilities. I also am skeptical about any Ubisoft game. The last one (that I remember) that I played was Ghost Recon Wildlands. It was okay, but not much story.

I would expect Ubisoft to be the masters of the open world after makings these games for 20 years. They have advanced nothing in that time. The AI is horrible, the gameplay is ruined by sloppy combat mechanics and controls that are from the 90's.

They got the biggest IP, the one IP everyone dreams of when it comes to "open world" and dropped the ball, picked it up, ran it back and scored for the other team.

Well....there is always Bethesda so, we'll see how the new Indiana Jones game fairs. The trailer alone looks better than the last movie. The only Star Wars game i would even dare play is if Bethesda did a new KOTOR.

I think LucasGames needs to create their own internal studio to handle whatever they want to consider to be their "bread and butter" franchise star wars/jones games.

I saw a quote from someone working on that Indy game and they were asked about whether it would have guns. They basically said Indy isn't a character who runs around shooting people. Okay, I get that, but he did gun down a room full of Nazis in TLC. There's ways to have guns like that available in limited certain situations and only until the ammo was gone, rather than just have no guns. I'm interested in it, but skeptical.

I don't think that would solve the problem. They have the same people calling the shots, or okaying ideas, that work on the movies/shows. I think the entire company has brain rot and until they change course, nothing will change. They seem to be ready to die on that hill and run the company into the ground.

Ubisoft arnt the masters of anything. If they are they masters, they are masters of mediocrity.

In terms of combat, they have never made a good combat system. If you want combat, look to Capcom, PlatinumGames, Ninja Theory, etc.
For open world, look to Rockstar.
For story, game developers really dont do it well. Hiring someone outside the company (a legit writer) pretty much always results in better work.
