I think its less better tech and more money that has caused a decline in creativity.FF6 is one of my favorite games, so hoping it would be good. A lot of new games seem to lose that magic. Similar to movies, I think back then with limited technology, they really had to get creative to tell the story. Now, they just cram over the top 3D action scenes down our throats.....while they look pretty and all, its almost like its the easy way out and sometimes just loses something.
I do think the PS2/Gamecube era is arguably the height of video games. It was likely the perfect balance between money entering the industry but games not being a high enough priority that executives were willing to loosen the reigns a little. Maybe the PS3 era was the peak (there was some common trends and more blatant mimicking and clones but still some originality and money invested to improve graphics). By the PS4 era, it seems games are getting more and more expensive to create so AAA games are forced into a checklist before release to ensure success. PS5 era is arguably worse, an era of remakes and remasters or copying each other at best. Given games now cost several millions to build, corporations are much more risk averse in trying new genres or new things.
AA would ideally fill this space but whenever a studio starts to reach that AA stage, they get acquired now.
