The Video Game Thread - anything and everything...

FF6 is one of my favorite games, so hoping it would be good. A lot of new games seem to lose that magic. Similar to movies, I think back then with limited technology, they really had to get creative to tell the story. Now, they just cram over the top 3D action scenes down our throats.....while they look pretty and all, its almost like its the easy way out and sometimes just loses something.
I think its less better tech and more money that has caused a decline in creativity.

I do think the PS2/Gamecube era is arguably the height of video games. It was likely the perfect balance between money entering the industry but games not being a high enough priority that executives were willing to loosen the reigns a little. Maybe the PS3 era was the peak (there was some common trends and more blatant mimicking and clones but still some originality and money invested to improve graphics). By the PS4 era, it seems games are getting more and more expensive to create so AAA games are forced into a checklist before release to ensure success. PS5 era is arguably worse, an era of remakes and remasters or copying each other at best. Given games now cost several millions to build, corporations are much more risk averse in trying new genres or new things.

AA would ideally fill this space but whenever a studio starts to reach that AA stage, they get acquired now.

Some of my personal picks from Sony's recent State of Play.

Days Gone getting a Remaster in April on PS5 and PS5 Pro. Only a $10 upgrade if you already own the PS4 version.

Metal Gear Solid Delta gets a release date and up for pre-order.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance gets a release date and is up for pre-order. The return of Sega's classic Shinobi series.

Dave the Diver getting a crossover DLC with Yakuza of all things.

Borderlands 4 revealed

Directive 8020 a new Space Horror game.

Onimusha 2 joins Onimusha in being remastered, up for pre-order.

Onimusha, Way of the Sword. Looks like it's featuring Musashi from the Netflix Onimusha anime. This is why we play with Japanese language on and English subtitles. Yikes.

Hell is Us looks interesting. Not sure what to make of it yet, but will probably buy it.

Blue Prince, what an interesting idea for a strategy game.

Tides of Annhilation looking absolutely insane.

Metal Eden, another entry in the recent Cyborg shooter genre.

MindsEye, looks like we're fighting AI again.

Saros, Housemarque back with a new game.

I SO want a sequel(!) Best zombie game I've ever played.

Days was a great game that had a terrible release and was demolished by critics on release.

While I do think there is a ton of potential in a sequel (the gameplay itself is great and has a great cliffhanger) but since both directors for the game have left Bend Studio, Im honestly not that excited about a prospective sequel if it did happen though. The directors do have issues but they did produce an interesting story with good gameplay.

Honestly, I believe this remaster is basically testing the waters to see if there is enough demand for a sequel.
Probably true, because graphically they are almost identical. Sort of like they put very little effort into it. Shouldn't even be called a remaster.

It's a re-release with some new content and game modes. Enough to buy again? Sure.

I hate the "lets remaster the game and add a little bit of content and see if people will buy to see if a sequel makes sense" attitude. It makes sense from a business perspective (low cost way to test the waters and make a little money) but remasters are quite lazy, especially for PS4 games where the games are already playable on modern consoles (PS5) and the graphical improvements are minimal. Sony is pulling the Hollywood phase of remaster games for more money.

I already have the game on disc so Ill probably wait to see if the new modes are worth it. I still need to beat the very difficult DLC challenges. I did really enjoy the game but not sure how I feel about a remaster. Permadeath, speedrun, and the arcade mode sound fun but Days was also still a little glitchy and it is still very possible to just get in a bad spot and die which makes permadeath not fun depending on how severe it is (one death resetting to the beginning is pretty brutal).

Saw that Robocop: Rogue City is on sale on the PS store for $8.99 until March 4h, ending that night.
Thats not too bad at all, and being a big Robocop fan, I'll see how it is now. Just finished downloading.
Never been a big FPS fan, but I did enjoy Goldeneye back on the N64, so who knows....

I enjoyed it, except the problems inherent in the game itself, like Robocop can't run and can't hide, meaning he becomes a bullet magnet. Otherwise, I had fun with it.

I really had no idea what to expect. Only a few hours in, and taking my time, as I didn't realize they would have so much exploreing. I guess I expected a hallway type shooter, only.
Reminds me of the Batman Arkham and Ghostbuster game.
I do see its got plenty of graphical glitches. I was reading people talking about these a year ago, so looks like they won't get fixed.
Like with ragdoll physics, weird things happen.

But then, with this guy, as I was walking up to him, saw his head was totally on backwards. Took the pic, then walking a little closer, just instantly snapped back to place. I see a lot of this type stuff happening.

Also, during the ingame cinemas, almost between every cut, everything is a pixilated blocky mess for a few frames.

Finished playing the Robocop game...twice. Pretty fun. Hearing everyone saying Robo, couldn't help but thinking of Robo from Chrono Trigger....so just had to make this.

Funny that I just finished the Robocop game, and see they just announced more, calling it a whole stand alone game.
Heres the trailer.
Looks like you'll get to control Murphy as a human. Not sure if its just alternate gameplay, a flashback, or something different.

I was thinking of something that might be a cool idea, and it would be making fun of that one scene in Robocop 3 where the girl "hacks" into an ED209 and makes it loyal as a puppy.
So was thinking in game, you get to an ED209, and a character says something like, hold on, I think I can hack it to help us out. He would be doing it wirelessly on a laptop, but you'd still need to protect him during that part....of course, the more damage you do to ED209, the less help it will be after the hacking....after a min, maybe another character could tell him to hurry up. He could yell, "Hey, its not like I can just type for it to be loyal as a puppy and make it work instantly" (cheesy, but still good I think)
Well, say you end up destroying ED209....now you have to go through the next area, which would be pretty difficult.....or, save it, and now can temporarily control it for the next part.

Just a cool idea I had. But doubt it could happen.

Good to see the game was successful enough to get a stand alone expansion. I'll probably pick it up. I still haven't played through the first game, but I'll have it ready to go for when the mood strikes me.

Seeing that today is Mar10 day, posting this video I made back in high school, around 1999, using the old tape deck edits off VHS tapes.

Still one of the best JRPGs and best games Ive ever played.

Nostalgia plays a role but great mechanics that prevents abilities from becoming "useless" even on new game plus, dual and triple tech encourages different parties and experimentation, nice side quests, great characters.

Made by Squaresoft with a godly team. Was really excited about the proposed sequel Chrono Break and the fanmade Crimson Echos that was shut down.

Not sure what Square is doing with this ip anymore. Some are hoping for a remake/remaster. I don't know. They are so busy with the FF7 remake stuff, and then theres still Kingdom Hearts 4, which who knows whats happening with that.
Chrono Trigger is so perfect already, any remake where they change or add too much stuff, and a lot of people, myself included, will be quite mad.
Just recently finished my 66th playthrough of the game on PS1, not including the SNES times.

Been waiting for this since the Kickstarter. Another developer tired of Nintendo holding a beloved IP hostage. Being touted as a spiritual successor to Advance Wars, Warside releases on PC April 14th and consoles this summer.
