The Video Game Thread - anything and everything...

Maybe my wishful thinking got mixed up with my memory but wasn't it announced that Dragon's Dogma 1 was going to be remastered with co op added?

It really bugs me any time some game related story starts getting a high enough profile that "real journalists" start talking about it. Most of them talk about videogames as being for children. I don't know if they don't do their research or what, but I get tired of tourist journalists barging their way in and screaming about how violent videogames need to be kept from children. Give me a ******** break! It's not like it just happens once, it happens every time they notice some game story. I remember cable news freaking out about a female Shepard being able to "romance" Liara in Mass Effect, and that was 17 years ago! You had 17 freaking years to do research and figure out these are M rated games and are for 18+! My other favorite part of this is reporters then going a step further and insulting the adults who play videogames.

There haven't been any real gaming journalists in over a decade. I always go to Youtuber's who share similar game play interests as me or people on other forums I frequent to give me their opinions on games before I will ever take the word of a current day game journo.

So I just finished playing through the original Secret of Mana on the SNES mini.
I see why its considered a classic, but things also felt a bit dated. Other games, like Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger, which came out not long afterwards, don't feel that dated at all.
It had some cool ideas, and I wasn't expecting the Legend of Zelda type action gameplay at all, but with Final Fantasy type leveling up.
I see that 6 years ago they made a remake, but watched a video that showed it has plenty of issues of its own.
I'm sure with all the mana games to date, they have worked out a lot of the issues over time.
But, I'm glad I finally took the time to try it out, and hope to play the remake eventually.

When the new one comes out I'm thinking of doing a playthrough of the whole series.

Was just looking, and see that theres like 15 of the games. I didn't realize there were so many.

EDIT- I guess some were just the remakes and phone games in the list. Says this new one coming out is technically only the 5th one.

Yeah, I'm only doing the mainline ones that came out on PS4/PS5.

Unfortunately, most gaming news is complete trash and the gaming journalism industry needs a huge overhaul. Its often that the people who arnt good enough to review movies or news do video games so we arnt exactly getting the best.

Unfortunately, gaming has become much more mainstream so more issues are coming out with grifters suddenly also becoming gamers lol. Pretty sure Matt Walsh is trying to jump in on the current Sweet Baby controversy and is mad that gamers arnt listening to him because they remember that he called all gamers man-babies in the not-so-distant past.

But yeah, when it comes to gaming, the talking points are always its only for children and cause violence so should be banned (something that ironically is supported by both sides of the political spectrum). Gaming is also childish and anyone over 12 that still holds a controller needs to grow up. With that kind of messaging, its just easier to tune out.

There is only one gaming news site that has stayed true. Good old bluesnews.com. Besides that noclip youtube channel(created by ex gamespot journo) has the best documentaries on game development.

Interesting rumor mill news making the rounds. A developer at EA has said that they have Star Wars Jedi Survivor running on a PS5 Pro Dev kit at 2K 120fps with no frame drop using PSSR and says that the system offers solutions, "beyond expectations". Supposedly the PS5 Pro will release shortly prior to GTAVI (Holiday season 2024) as well as be offered as a bundle with GTAVI when it releases. The whole push for the Pro is intended to support GTAVI and offer the highest returns in terms of performance for the game.
Additionally the PS5 Pro is being developed to be 'forward' compatible with PS6 games. So if you aren't ready to upgrade to the PS6 at launch, you can still play PS6 games on your Pro.

Today I decided to round up a bunch of my old games that I really never played, was given to me and I never played, or now have on the SNES mini or maybe a remaster of the game.
Also, my original NES wasn't working, but my roommates son, who is now in college learning electronics stuff, was able to test it and found out the system should still work, it was just the plug in wasn't.
So I went to this game store that opened up a few months ago about 2 miles from me. Called, 8-bitPlus.
They have some nice old retro stuff in there. We tested my NES with one of their cords, and sure enough, it does still work. Yay.
Then, for all the games I brought, minus the Batman Arkham games, since they get to many of those, I had nearly $140 worth towards cash, or 180 of store credit.
I got the cord with store credit, and then took the rest in cash. Not too bad.

They even had an original SNES Earthbound game, still in the giant box it came with back then. It had probably been opened, but he said everything was still there....so that was priced at $3000.
But they also had a pretty rare SNES game, called, Star Fox: Super Weekend. That was made for a contest through Nintendo Power back in 1993 and you could only play for 5 mins and then it tallied your score. Depending on the points scored, players could win a t-shirt, a jacket, or even trips to international destinations. An estimated 2000 cartridges were made.
Being so rare, the guy asked what I thought the price was. I guessed $5000.
I was right. That is their asking price. Extreme collectors only....

Nice to play some actual old NES games.

This one still pretty easy.

Sky Shark, much harder, but really great music for the NES. Tim Follin was way ahead of his time.

I noticed that the old PS1 game, Twisted Metal 1 & 2 had been re-released for PS4/5, and they added trophies. Both were $10 each, so I got TM2. No graphical changes, so still looks very much like a PS1 game. Although, the health pick ups used to have the plus/cross sign for medical use, but they did change that to a heart now.
30 trophies. Really easy, other than fighting the controls of such an old game. Probably the easiest Platinum I've ever gotten.

I also see that Nobuo Uematsu, of Final Fantasy music fame, turns 64 today. 3/21/24
He'll have to make a video game version of the Beatles', "When I Turn Sixty Four."

EDIT-I guess google hadn't updated yet when I saw it was his birthday....he is actually 65 now....so hes been doing the beetles song a year already...lol.
