The Ultimate Guide to Lightsabers eBook

Seth, thanks again for the bible! We are indebted to you.

Also, I discuss that promo photo in the OT blade thread - I found it too, looks like a real flash

This picture was in my Facebook feed. I don't recall seeing it before.

Hadnt seen that one, but it looks to be similar to the black and white shot where the saber has no grips-- both seem to be candids of Mark outside the hotel they were using as base camp for the exterior Hoth stuff... which fits with the theory that glue was used first, and screws were added the cold made them come off too easily.

I see what you're saying, but I think that if that above D-ring was an actual triangle shape, it would be huge. See how far the sides would have to travel to reach a point at the top? Maybe this is just a case of the d-ring sitting high on the hook because the hook isn't narrow enough to let it sit lower? Maybe they spread the d-ring open a bit in the middle to make it sit better on that wide belt clip?

It's got to be really misshapen then. Because compared to the D-ring on his belt, the one on his saber has a very different shape.

It is weird. The ESB D-ring is known to be deformed. But in this picture it sure looks like a triangular ring. [emoji848]

If this is late in production, I could see the weight of the graflex bouncing up and down over months pulling the d-ring into this shape.

If the ring is steel I’ll have to disagree. It really requires exertion of force to do that, not just a bouncing (considering how light graflex are by comparison to the Obiwan parts)

however, a prop master, or actor, who was annoyed with the way the D shape allows the saber to ‘swing freely’ might’ve decided to flatten the apex of the curve to match the Belt clip to help reduce its awkward movement.

a shape like that

however, you can see the crest of the ring continues UP.

and a standard D ring wouldn’t gain that much material... also the sides wouldn’t straighten out like that

I’m going to go on a limb and say that it is either the Yuma-hero tri-ring or from the same source.

I’m in the yuma/hero tri ring..

The edges look identical to the yuma/hero

I bet they scavenged this tri ring off this graflex since they weren’t using graflex’s in RoTJ

Looks to me like the early Finse shooting (including the snowspeeder escape shots) used the tri-ring (and the initial, notchless grips), and then the studio/Bespin/Dagobah stuff used the d-ring, be it due to the use of different props or the ring being replaced along the way.

So you're saying they made the notches during this phase of shooting? Right before this photo?
