Re: The Smugglers Room - Star Wars Themed Prop & Rec Room
Completely awesome, the way you mix the practical with the artistic is really cool. Too bad you can't make Han the bar top.
Thank you! The bar top would be sweet, too bad its so wide and I have somewhat limited space. I'll tell you though, its an intriguing idea!
Quite like the texture of the carbonite you got going... is that just pass after pass of wood glue?
Could you give a quick summary of how you went about it?
sure can man, thanks for the kudos!
Really all i did is follow in the footsteps of many other greats builds here. I started with wood glue and freaked out! it rippled a bit and i thought i had done something wrong. One of the members here,
Michael Bergeron was able to talk me off the ledge and i let it set. Even though the wood glue worked out i still switched to the white elmers glue. It seemed to dry faster than the wood and I didn't see much of the ripple effect.
I think the big secret to getting it looking good is being patient, which i tend to lack. But multiple people reached out and urged me to do that. So I poured a bit in pools, let it dry somewhat and then scrape over it with a putty knife. Then i repeated that over and over again until the texture looked how I wanted. I did bigger pools in some areas and smaller in others.
One thing I did early on that I did not like was just pooling the glue. If you look over the prop there are several if not many, deliberate scrapes and scratches rather than clean pools of material. So letting a pour dry just a tad, and then make passes with the knife helped it look interesting. The good news is, if you don't like the result you can pour a layer of glue over the undesired area, let it dry, and then start again.
Really, i don't think personally there is a wrong way to do it. Just dive in, don't be timid with it, and then test with primer grey to see what you have. Sorry NeoRutty, thats a bit random and all over the map for a good summary, but thats the way my warped brain works
thanks for looking!
