Back to the future II: "Odd man out / Question Mark Hoverboard" Hoverboard DIY

I plan to build the "Question Mark Hoverboard" / "Odd Man Out" hoverboard myself and the idea is slowly taking on real features. My English comes from a translator, sorry for that.

It's my first do it your self board but I once built a poker table Maybe it could be something.

With the decal files that our esteemed Roland has provided me, I wanted to give something back with my progress in this forum. As long as the hoverboard is also good Maybe I will also get very good tips from the community here, which I assume.

My current plan and preparations are as follows:

- Magnet pads, battery box, connections and foot pad are just printed in the matching color. Pictures will follow.

- Then have the film printed in European A1 format.

- Buy MDF wood board and saw it to size.

- Priming the board, painting the edges. (Where I'm still thinking about it.) foil. It is important for me NO BUBBLES AND THE FOIL MUST HOLD.

-Assemble Parts.

With Roland's permission, I'm adding the link to the 1:1 hoverboard decals file here.

Time by Time, I would like to publish the steps here and encourage you to imitate them.

The pads, battery box, and connectors are already printed.
I've asked two agencies for the vinyl and will receive a quote in the next few days.

What I forgot are the brackets on the back edges.
I wonder if there's a 3D file for them? Otherwise, I'll have to make them out of wood.

I was planning to get the MDF board tomorrow. I think it's supposed to be 1" thick, like the Mattel board.

I meant those side mounts. I'll have to come up with something for that.

The Mattel board is actually 1 inch thick; in the movie, however, it’s portrayed as a toy board for small children. The other hoverboards are only 0.75 inch thick, which is closer to the thickness of real skateboards. ;)

By the way, nice project! :)

In case you need more hi-res images of a screen used board. :)

Thank you so much, thank you Roland. I really wasn't sure about the thickness. You helped me a lot with that.

The project has stalled a bit, but it's definitely not on hold. My wife's vacation plans are currently limiting our financial resources. Nevertheless, it's being built...it's just taking a little longer.

Thanks to you, I can now buy the MDF board with peace of mind.

I also found the side brackets at yeggi.com and have already printed them.

I also got the first quote for the vinyl. €85 if I cut it myself. I wanted to get a second quote now.

€17.84 at Aufkleber DIN A1 quer (84,1 cm x 59,4 cm) | WIRmachenDRUCK ;)

We just had to laugh at me at work because of you, Roland. Because I had the idea of requesting the vinyl from a local advertising agency and hadn't even considered an online service provider...my employer also regularly prints with WIRmachenDRUCK.

Thanks for the other good idea!!! The price difference is enormous. I'll take a look right away.

One more question that's been bothering me...The surface seems to be some kind of skateboard grip. What if you put a "transparent skateboard grip tape" over your vinyl?...

When I zoom in to those excessively high resolution pictures, I see paint, not vinyl. Tangent, obviously vinyl would look wonderful but I bring it up because the grip tape comment seems spot on. This looks like very thick and textured grip tape or thick sand filled paint (likely is official grip tape). I have little to no experience with grip tape but years with vinyl and the reverse vinyl use as a paint mask.

This brings me to the clear grip tape comment which would work over colored vinyl but would need to be cut per piece to avoid a coated or suction wrapped look. Cutting it to match the cut colored sections would give a nice thick look like the pictures.

Anyone have a lock on the process used on the original?

If you want the vinyl decal to look more realistic, that’s certainly not a bad idea. But there’s one thing you should know: my decals are meant for the "lazy" people who just want to reproduce the rough appearance of the hoverboards. If you really want it to be prop-accurate, there’s no way around using grip tape and paint. ;)

Your wrap looks amazing...and I'm really not sure when I look at the pictures...does the original have grip tape on it? I now think not. I'm going to order the wrap from WirmachenDruck.de. The online page shows me €17.90. For that price, it's worth a look. There are two versions of this wrap, as far as I can see...matte or glossy. I'm currently debating.

There's a shot of Marty's board over the lake where it's clearly grip tape, and others clearly velcro.

And the lenticular in this one just looks like pink bubble wrap to me.

Different board, I know, but this movie's effects team definitely played fast and loose with materials. The continuity team must have been at their wits' end!

Even the Mattel logo is wrong; too many points on the star and too much clear space around the company name...!

Tomti, have you ever considered getting your own vinyl cutter? A few hundred will get you an A3 capable cutter and then you just buy vinyl and cut individual shapes as you require.

That's neon pink and green (hook) velcro in this shot. The Mattel hoverboard doesn't have grip tape. ;)

Respectfully, I'm not so sure.

Look at the pink tape. There appears to be "creases" in it alone both lengths. These creases are parallel to the white material. You wouldn't see them in hook or loop parts of velcro as the thicker nature of the material would mask the edges of any material underneath.

Also look at the edge of the board...rather than baby (Barbie?) pink, it's almost (exactly?) the same neon pink as the diagonal lines.

My theory? This board was designed to get wet. Duct tape seals, velcro doesn't. I think someone went over the joins in duct tape and once around the edge for good measure - to make it watertight.

I honestly don't know what you think you're seeing in the circled area, but I still just see pink Velcro and white vinyl. ;) The Velcro was attached with double-sided tape.

Here is the exact screen used board that was attached to Michael's shoes. ...

What I thought was a "seam" where a single piece had been used to cover a joint beneath is easier to see in your pictures as a join between two pieces of Velcro. Thanks, it helps a lot.

Also...wow but they took a battering didn't they?

Also while I'm doing the "I got it wrong" thing...the Mattel logo is correct...for 2015. They DID reduce the points to 38 from the original 50...but not until 2019!
