The Mandalorian (TV series)

I just watched New Rockstars breakdown, & they're thinking there was a Tusken at the campfire scene, during the montage before Mando got to the town, that could've been Fett. All the way on the left of the screen, sitting near the Bantha.

I guess the thought is, he was with this particular tribe, then followed Din when he left.

I don't have the capabilities to pull screen grabs, or lighten them up if I could, but has anyone else seen or thought along these lines?

I mean, I absolutely think he's been in hiding with the Sand People, but whether that's because he's given up his old ways, he's hiding, or he's biding his time before making a move, IDK.

Part of it, for me, is just I got used to it. I've accepted that no matter what we get from Disney, it'll always have a heaping helping of 'memberberries.

But I also give Mando a pass because Favreau and Feloni are, fundamentally, much better storytellers than Abrams and co. I understand who Mando is as a character and why he makes the decisions he does; he's somebody to relate to in a story I can get involved in. I hate the R5 callback and seeing that Jabba door knocker again and carbonite blocks and all that too, but the show pulls me in anyway because it knows how to do simple but effective and consistent characterization, and how to tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Compared with TFA, where it never knew what to do with FInn being a former brainwashed child soldier (you'd never know it, from the way he was characterized after the first act of that movie), or with Rey, who was a lonely orphan who just wanted to wait for mommy and daddy yet still, somehow, made all the same decisions in acts 2 and 3 that Luke did, a character who wanted the literal exact opposite of what she did. And never mind that TFA didn't just do callbacks but also copied the plot from ANH, and didn't have a real ending.

That sort of crappy writing leaves a viewer with nothing to do but focus on the stupid fanservice.

Basically, all Disney Star Wars is fanfic, but there can still be good fanfic and bad fanfic. Both types recycle and regurgitate stuff we've seen before, but the good type at least takes a deeper dive into the recycled material, while the bad only throws it in your face and says "here's that stuff you liked before!"

Haha. Mando is like a girl I dated years ago. She was super cute and fun... Everything you want in a girlfriend - but then would stay really stupid embarrassing stuff in front of my friends that I would have to make excuses for.

I really really wanna love this show... it looks and sounds and is doing stories like I want...

But then yeah... R5 rolls in.

a great example of what I love is the boat rowing droid. base R2 unit, but more going on with the arms and legs.... Loved that.

Yeah, I can't make any excuses for that. I think I audibly grumbled "oh come on" when that happened. It was the most egregious, unnecessary bit of fanservice since the Client having the same door security droid as Jabba's palace.

If they really had to include R5, he should have been in the flashback on board the sandcrawler, when they tried to trade Olyphat's character a droid. I'd have gotten a kick out of it if the Jawas were still trying to unload that POS.

See, I don’t feel that would have been an unreasonable reference, especially if it were more of a background thing. It’s the extreme close-up on the busted motivator that makes it the same as the cantina pair showing up on Jeddha in Rogue One.

I’ve had no issue with the fan service when it’s connecting tissue.

I love Rouge One, but the Ponda Bobba/Dr. Evazan run-in was waaay too in your face. Poorly done. As was having R2 and 3PO on Yavin 4. It’s like some clueless executive added that via imperial decree.

The Mandelorian is doing LOTS to create new lore while building on old. The Karyt Dragon was an excellent expansion of SW using established locations and characters (Jawas, Tuscans, Banthas). The R5 droid use was a little too in my face but the pod racer engine/speeder much more subtly done. Pit droids are used well IMHO.

This is the way.

See!? there... That's a decent way to shove R5 in... I would have been okay with them still stuck with it, trying to pawn it off.

Sad beep as it doesn't get picked.

Very cringe-worthy. Hearing the tusken speak made me laugh. The droid lady who can't act is back. Ugh. The whole lose the town/take back the town scenes were laughable.

So, if Fett lost his armor, who was it at the end of chapter 5 that made the appearance?

It was Fett. Rewatch the ending of the episode and turn up the volume, you can hear the spurs as he turns and walks off. He must have kept his boots.

You can also hear it here at 1:25:

As for the R5 discussion, Filoni has stated that he liked the idea that R5 never got off the planet and has kind of been passed around. Being that it's not that big of a planet, with small towns and blue collar inhabitants, I'd figure stuff would get passed around several times and things would keep turning up (hence Anakin's pod racer engines). It's only natural that you're going to eventually come back into contact with something you saw a few years ago. Especially if it's worth something and the Jawas are around.

Well Vanth had the armor, but not the boots right? That reminds me, will we see Fennec Shand again?...
I'm kinda torn on that...I mean, they cast Ming Na Wan in the role, so you'd think it would be significant, but then they apparently kill her off, which just makes it look like stunt casting.

I personally don't think we will, because I think she's dead. Unless my memory is wrong, she was shot as the suns were rising in the morning, but when Fett was approaching the body, it was night again. She may still be alive, but lying unmoving in the desert all day makes me think she isn't.

Thing is, she's a bounty hunter and Fett is used to being in a clan of bounty hunters. Who knows what happened to Sing, Bossk, Dengar? She might yet be alive and he's looking for another crew to hunt down the bounty on the baby's head, so he picked her up. As you said, she's a pretty big name in the Disney circuit to just use for one small bit part.

This is definitely leading up to a Din/Fett show down. I don't think they're gonna be buddies.

Good points, but I'm still thinking that he's been living with the Sand People for the last 3 years, therefore would have no knowledge of any bounties. If this appearance isn't a one & done, & he does go after Din, then I believe the 'father/son' dynamic with the whole 'Clan of Two' will remind Fett of the life he & Jango had. He'll see the life he never got to have & make a different decision than what most think he will. Just my opinion.

I’m like 99% sure that Fett and Shand will ambush Mando as he returns to Mos Eisley in the next episode.

Shand will have a vendetta and Fett has the familiarity with the planet.

Anyone find it odd that Din, being a member of the guild, doesnt recognize the armor of the "most notorious bounty hunter in the galaxy"? I get its a big galaxy, and we dont know how long Din has been a bounty hunter.... but its implied Boba has quite a reputation. Maybe its just his name...and most dont know what he actually looks like.

It’s definitely a little weird. I expected some Dread Pirate Roberts DNA in the storytelling with Mando, SOMEBODY mistaking him for Fett or at least making a comparison. Would have been an interesting angle to see him piggybacking off the notoriety. It would make Fetts return a little more logical too, gotta stop the poser.

I would be completely fine if that little shot was all we got of Boba and that’s it, just to let us know he’s around.

And as for how he survives, this episode did a good job of basically giving us all the info we need.

Krayt dragons can eat sarlaccs apparently. Besker can survive being eaten by a krayt dragon even when covered in acid. There you go, that’s how Fett escaped.
The flip side of that is, while beskar can stand up to the acid - 100% of the outfit isn't beskar. From the looks of it, it's like 35% or so. Spit of acid hits you above those thigh armor pieces and you're in a lot of trouble. Moreseo at the neck.
