The Mandalorian (TV series)

Re: Jon Favreau Star Wars TV series..

Well, it's official from Kathleen Kennedy. No Boba fett stand alone film.

So, QUESTIONS:
1) Should this new Mandalorian series, whatever it turns out to be, have an anonymous protagonist?
2) Should we EVER see his or her face?
3) Should he/she EVER have the helmet off (ala Jango?)
4) Will they make this some relative of the Fetts?
5) Is this really going to be "Clint Eastwood in space", as was the inspiration for the ESB Fett?

1. if he's the focus of the show, the viewer has to identify with him. Hard if he's too anonymous. Could be revan type thing i guess where he doesn't recall who he is, but completely anonymous would likely keep viewers from being too into him. Even with the Punisher, you identify with the guy.

2. & 3. Why not see the face? Short of anonymity there's no reason not to. It worked with Boba fett because he wasn't a primary, or even secondary focus. You can go to a cantina in a helmet, but you can't drink or eat. Pretty hard to have a relationship if the helmet never comes off. While it sounds like it could be an interesting plot device to never take it off, it becomes a bit limiting. It's also harder to get a good actor to take a lead role if they're never seen. I think you can get away with it for a while, but not very long. Jango was a bit of a bigger focus than Boba ever was - cinematically at any rate - But the helmet was off where it should have been off. Talking to people, protecting his ID, talking to his kid. It was on when it should have been on - when fighting.

4. I'd like to say no, but you can never tell.

5. I think they were far enough into the show that it probably wasn't intended to be Clint in Space. If that changes, it likely wouldn't be until a season 2. But i think it depends on the original premise, how well it works, and what the plan was going forward. I mean, i'd LIKE to think they accounted for that stuff, but the current movies make me worry much more than i should on that aspect :) I believe Fav approached the first IM assuming there'd be more so hopefully if he's the 'show runner', he's contemplated where it goes in S2, 3, etc.

The only reason Fett is considered so "cool" is that we only saw him in 1 cartoon an 2 brief movie appearances. We don't know anything about him, hence why he's so "cool". Once we know anything about him, we'll lose all interest in him.

Think of Guinan on TNG. She was mysterious, and all we got were little tid-bits about her and her race. She's very old and wise. Was somehow connected to Picard, but he was tight lipped on the subject. She even had the privilege of walking into Picard's office and warn him about the Borg, etc.

As soon as all was revealed about her race and her connection to Picard, all she was to us was just the bar tender after that,

To be fair, I suspect the show will be far more entertaining to me than any Boba Fett movie could have been. The movie probably would have been a better spectacle on screen, but I'm content with what we appear to be getting from the show.

So 'Fall Guy' in space? Hopefully leadership gets a nudge in the right direction instead of slushing out another meh SW film. Is the new Fett he going to at least be a Kiwi dude or are they gonna recast with Brenda Fett?

I'm not sure what you're going on about. It was just posted that they're not making a boba fett movie, so there is no "new fett". Fett wasn't even Kiwi to begin with, until they cast the actor for jango, and even then, jango and boba aren't actually mandalorians, so there's no reason at all that the actor in The Mandalorian would/should be an actor from any particular part of the world.

And they're not "slushing out another meh SW film", this thread isn't even about a new movie. they're making a whole new series.

Does that mean he's the Mandalorian? Does that mean they had someone else doing that promo shot? Werent they already filming to only just announce him now?

Darn. I was really looking forward to not watching this.
Now that Pedro's been cast, I kinda hate that I'm going to miss it.

"Insiders say [...] [he's] been offered the part" isn't the same as 'he's been cast'. And I also want to know what that means in regards to that promo shot. If the lead hadn't been cast yet, who was in that costume? Or might promo-Mando not be the lead? Etc.

Pedro Pascal is a genius casting move, IMO. He's a fantastic actor and with Favreau holding the reins, I think this is a strong contender for my favorite new show.

Again, source? The Hollywood Reporter article that ComingSoon quoted named no source for their claim. At least the HR original mentioned -- low in the article -- that Pascal is still "in negotiations" for the part. Variety's article went up not quite half an hour after the HR one, but said of Carano that her inclusion is "confirmed by sources".

I'm still waiting for LFL themselves to say something about the casting, and not taking anything to the bank until it's actually stated by them.

I'm hopeful that these reports are accurate and deliberate press leaks, but try not to get excited by the Hollywood gossip mill. It's disappointed me in the past.

So now I'm doubly curious who that is in the publicity shot, since Pablo hadn't been cast yet...
