The Mandalorian (TV series)

So.... live action Dark Trooper guy in a practical costume in the background....

Yea, they cover that in the hour+ long special about season 2 that came out today. Dark troopers were live action so they could get the realistic lighting effects off of the real surfaces like the helmets and shoulders and stuff. They want to get the "not quite perfectly smooth surface" look for armors and such, and it's apparently easier and more fool proof to put a goon in a helmet on screen, rather than try to try and "rough up" a CGI surface after the fact.

Side note, Rodriguez's son, that got to film the home made rough cut of the first fett fight scene, using a toy helmet and a PKD, may be the coolest kid ever now. lol.

This is how it should be done. It is so much cheaper and accessible than it was in 1977, not to mention digital compositing makes things cleaner than the old mattes, and yet as a special effect it has fallen almost entirely by the wayside.

yea, apparently, what they did a lot for ships and background, was to build it as a prop, then scan photo/etc, and put it into the computer to use in the volume. The tie fighter junk yard was built as a miniature, scanned, and used in the meyfeld prison scene; stuff like that.

I assume so. While I'd love to have them do more, I don't really see where there's room for it within the confines of how the show is set up. Wouldn't surprise me if Gallery became a one-and-done show series about each of the Star Wars shows that get released over time. Maybe add the Marvel ones in too; I don't remember if Gallery is marked as "star Wars" or simply "Disney".

That clip of Rodriguez jamming out with Grogu is absolutely adorable! I don't know how they do it. He looks so real!!!! I was telling my mother in law today about how lovable he is but had to clarify that he was not in fact Yoda himself, but one of his species and she's crazy smart but I can only imagine the confusion for a new comer to Star Wars trying to figure out the timeline and where each show/ movie fits in relation to the other. Sure for fans like us it's not complicated but working in retail when I can barely get customers to follow even the most basic instruction I can only imagine the difficulty in trying to explain this world to them. lol

They made the right choice making Baby Yoda a physical animatronic puppet. Just another example what they did right in the Mandelorian.

Love how Rodriguez kid is using a PKD.

For those who need their day warmed up a little. Robert Rodriguez playing his guitar with Grogu nodding along. XD

I know a lot of these BTS productions are fluff pieces put together by studios, just so actor A can speak about the incredible experiences they had with actor B & director C & how strong don't coordinator D is & etc, but these Disney Gallery episodes really give me the feeling that most of these folks actually care about the product they're putting out. I think Bryce Dallas Howard is the only one that came across that way, & I attributed that to the other BTS stuff she's done for the Jurassic series.

It just emphasized to me that there's actually a ton of care & thought put into every aspect of the show, regardless of what a myriad of armchair creators may think. I mean, I remember watching one of the ROTS featurettes with Lucas where he didn't know which saber was supposed to be Anakin's. As a 'prop guy', hearing that Filoni wanted the size of Ahsoka's sabers right, edged him up a notch to me.

I think that's an issue that could speak for the franchise. We know that the story of the OT was great, & really had an influence on most of our young minds, but the DETAILS... the props, the ships, the costumes... those are some of the things that have kept us involved for 40+ years. Writers & directors like Favreau, Reed, Fukiyama, etc can tell great stories that will speak to us, but knowing that the EPs know what has helped SW stay special to us all makes me root for these guys just a little bit more.
