The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Painted the clear coat last night (satin) and had it drying in the garage. I came out to check on it and a small bug LANDED on it and stuck to the clear. Anyone have any tips on how to fix this? Should I just wetsand the satin clear coat with 2500 and put one more coat? I don't want it to look milky and cloudy.

I loathe painting outside for this exact reason. It seems painting DRAWS the insects in and they ALWAYS land and get stuck in the paint.

I had the garage doors open because of the strong smell and the little ******* flew in and landed on it. Here it is after I moved it inside last night:

Here's my finished product. It's not even close to being as good as some of the other shields around here but I'm happy with it. There's a little chip in the red paint and you can probably see it. It's from taping but it's not that bad. All in all I've learned from my mistakes and I feel like next time I can do much better.

Looks pretty good! before you clear it, you could cover that chip with red sharpie, spray extra in a cup and paint it on or just battle damage the shield.

Get a small artist brush, spray some red paint into a cup, then touch it up carefully.

Im so nervous about clear coating mine after the problems people have had. LOL I really dont want to have to strip it and start over if the clear coat looks bad.

Man that Duplicolor Anodized red is a PITA. More so than the blue for some reason. I had to strip my shield because it all chipped off as I pulled the tape off. Yes I followed the directions. What other reds are you guys using?

Testors. Comes in very small cans.

Not as good as my WS shield but.... Gonna make it a battle damaged shield. I loathe the red. It is such as PITA to paint

Battle Damage! Gotta wait for the blue to dry before I can add more scuffs. This is real battle damage lol. I took steel wool to the shield. Now the question is how to get the black charred look around the scrapes?

How long are you waiting for the red to dry before you remove the tape?

As soon as I spray the last coat I peel the tape. I got it better this last time but you have to do 3 very light coats then 2 heavy coats
Wait 24 hours or at least over night for the paint to dry before peeling the tape. It will always come up clean.

I've only ever sprayed one or two heavy coats of the duplicolor, and I peel the tape immediately. Nearly perfect every time

Ive always thought paint would stick together if its dry. Thats why I peel when its wet. I didnt do the 3 light coats before, thats probably why it peeled. Thanks for the advice though. Ill have to try that on my next one.

Ive tried 2 coats and it just didnt do. You could always see the mist (1st coat) underneath. I did 4 coats actually

Anybody have a link or tips on how to add the black for weathering?
