The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Mega Den

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

It will be a while.

I have to re-floor the first floor starting in the new dining room which is this weeks project.

Once it's done I'll set it up as the living room so I can do the floor in the threater/living room and re-floor the kitchen.

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

As promised, it has been a while since my last update and I don't have much to post.

Since I replaced the entire floor on the first level, this has basically become a first floor renovation.

Every room, even the half bath, has been stripped to some extent and now I have to get everything back together.

We also decided to do some work in the kitchen, but I post about that later.

There are a lot of and cabinets and furniture that I have to build and I started with the entertainment center and 2 end tables.

This is one big honkin cabinet.

Here it is with a base coat of black, eventually it will burgundy crackle finish with a granite top. As I paint this I will finish the end tables.

The granite guy will be here Thursday so I have to have all 3 assembled by then.

Then I'll have to get to work on the kitchen, followed by the half bath and then a ton of cabinets.

Its going to be a busy summer

Thanks for the nice comments, I know I don't update this thread much or give much feed back but I'm work long hours at the house and at the hanger, so I don't have a lot of time to chat :(

Kitchen Re-Renovation

It's only been a few years since we renovated the kitchen but part of the new living room renovation was the replacement of the tile floor on the entire first floor.

Since everything had to come out I decided to make a few changes to the kitchen and bathroom

In this post, I'll just discuss the changes we made to the kitchen.

Kitt has been wanting to get rid of the peninsula and I wanted to add some high end details like ogee feet and real granite counter tops.

Here are some pictures from our last reno

Here is what we have done so far

  • The tile floor has been replaced with hand scraped laminate
  • The peninsula is gone and I used parts from those cabinets to make the pantry cabinet between the refrigerator and the double oven cabinet.
  • All of the cabinets have been reinforce to handle the new 3cm thick granite which should be here next Saturday.
  • I removed the toe kick on all of the cabinets and replaced them with ogee feet

I still have a lot of work to do before the kitchen is done but it's ready for the granite.

Once that’s done I start finishing everything on the first floor. I have tons of cabinets to build, a new island to build and miles of molding to install.

But it's getting there

REPURPOSED CABINETS

I was able to use parts from the peninsula cabinets I removed to make a new panty cabinet. It replaced the full depth wall cabinet and base cabinet that was between the refrigerator and the double wall oven cabinet

Here is the original set up

The original set up was ok but it had a small 2' wide counter that was always covered with stuff and had a generally messy appearance.

The new cabinet looks like this:

This took care of several issues.

The open area is now enclosed and I didn’t have to get a new counter for it which would have cost about $250. That is a lot of money for a counter that is more of a shelf.

It was pretty simple to build. I built the box and the face frame from scratch and then I used all 4 drawers from the peninsula so Kitt didn’t lose any drawer space. I modified the top door by reducing it's width (I still need to re-finish this door) and added the second middle door from a base cabinet.

It looks great and Kitt loves it.

Holy crap man....you are my cabinet twin. I redid our cabinets last March with almost the identical finish and hardware. I am holding off on countertops simply because I cant make up my mind finish and color.

PS The Modern/antique range-oven is outstanding. That isnt cheap.

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

I finally had time to do a quick update on the progress of the kitchen

The granite is in, the feet are matched to the cabinets and the refrigerator cabinet is almost done but I still have to make the doors for it.

Seriously Dave..is there anything you can't do? I'm always amazed by your talent to build things...good luck with the project!

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

Thanks for the nice compliment Dan :)

I finished the crown molding on all of the Kitchen cabinets.

A neighbor asked why I changed it. Originally the kitchen had pine counters and the pine crown and valance molding that matched them so it looked good.

However, with black granite counters there wasn't any reason to leave the pine moldings.

I still have to do the exhaust fan cabinet and the valance molding around the bottom of the cabinets but this is a big improvement over the way it was

Here are some pictures of the initial set up for the prop displays in the theater room, a lot of the items on display are just place holders for items I want to get

The 1/2 bath is finished.

We completely updated it, the pedestal sink was replaced with a new vanity which I bought at a second hand store for $20. I applied a coat of crackle paint after which I used my prop weathering skills to age it. I used the same process on the mirror. We also re-accessorized the entire room with oil rubbed bronze accessories.

This just used to be a 1/2 bath of the first floor that was seldom used but now Kitt loves it so much she leaves the door open so she can see it very time she walks past it .

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

Since the initial set up of the grid wall prop displays, I have been looking for ways to update and improve them.

I started with the Star Wars Rebel side. I replaced a few of the items and added some new pieces.

The Gentle Giant Slave Leia is a 1000% improvement over the "Lukeia" statue that it replaced and the Sideshow Rebel Fleet Trooper is just awesome

I think the 12" C-3P0 looks a lot better the the pile of 3P0s and R2s that I originally had in that area of the display. Now I just need to find a 12" scale R2. I might eventually replace the duo with the Medicom statues, but I don't mind going cheap for now. I really need a Chewie but I have not found one that I like yet.

I like the less cluttered look you get by using a single larger items so I'm looking forward to updating the rest of the collection.

I did some maintenance on my Photobucket account and accidently deleted a couple folders.

All the images should be fixed now.

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

Damn, Mr. Debt! With all of these projects going on all the time when do you find time to go to work?

I have been trying to pick a name for this type of room because it's not really a Theater Room, nor is a Living Room. It might be Great Room but I like a term from a new show called Mega Dens

These seem to be large rooms designed around a central theme and most have decent entertainment systems and comfy furniture.

So that's what we are going to call this room.

I edited the title to reflect that.

I love the Attakus Luke Jedi Statue, I was never able to get one of those. I only found the Xwing Pilot version of the statue
