The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Mega Den

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

Here are some invaluable dry wall tools that you need to pick up (unless you already have them)

  • Stanley "Panel Carry" Assistants $7 each
  • Senco Duraspin Belf Feed Screw Gun $100 at Lowes
  • Warner 20" Work Platform. I bought 4 of these on Black Friday for $20 each at Lowes.

Boba, are you going for a projector/screen setup in the new theatre room? or sticking with a TV?

I just bought a projector and built a screen and the 'feel' it gives you is amazing!!

Nothing beats a proj based set up for that true cinema feel. I too am in the middle of building a new proj based home cinema in my spare room upstairs. Heading out to buy a new amp today aswell.

Good luck with the build friend. Looking forward to seeing the final product! :cool:thumbsup

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

Our room isn't large enough for a projector, we only have a 12' viewing distance.

Instead we have a 60" LG Plasma TV, which is enough for us.

Looking forward to seeing more progress on this project -looks exciting! Good luck!

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

I stippled the ceiling last night and painted it today.

I used a Glidden product that goes on pink and turns white, it's a way to make sure you don't miss any spots.

I wouldn't say that this project is epic but it will be a nice upgrade to our floor plan

I did a drawing to check the layout of the furniture and display cabinets and the 14' x 23' space gets small really fast.

The "Prettys" cabinets are for Kitts collectalbles and the "Props" cabinets are for our reduced prop collection.

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

Is there a particular theme to your props that you will be incorporating into the design?

Looks like it's going to be a very nice space! I envy the opportunity to do it!

If you mean what type of props I'll be displaying, the majority of them are from Star Wars and there is a picture of them in original post.

But there will be some of my favorites from other movies in a separate display cabinet which will sit in front of the window on the short wall, which will also serve as a computer center.

About 15 years ago I built the below pictured entertainment cabinet for what was considered a large TV back then.

How ever, times have changed and it doesn't work with todays TVs

I spent $1200 for the materials to build it and I couldn’t even sell it for $1000 through any local venue.

So I'm going to modify and re-paint it to work in the new room.

Nice workmanship, funny how styles change. We had a lot of custom-built ins that I had to completely rework for modern equipment.

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

I mounted all 8 grid wall panels today. These will be used to display the props.

An 8" tall ceiling soffit will define the top of the display and a matching 20" tall base cabinet will define the bottom.

I used a scrap of wood to temporarily secure the panels. The finished mount will be trimmed out with molding painted the same color as the walls.

To get all 8 panels mounted in a uniform way, I notched a scrap piece of plywood to use as a guide for the bottom rail. Once I installed the first screw I leveled the rail and installed the second screw. Then I used the grid wall panel as a spacer and installed the top rail.

Re: The Demolition of Our Prop Room & Birth of a Theater Room

I've made a lot of progress but there is still a lot of work to do.

Before I put the floor down in this room I have to do the floor in the new dining room, so I'll be playing musical furniture until that's done.

In these pictures I have already moved the old entertainment center into the theater room. I removed the drawers from the center section so it could be re-purposed as a computer center / display cabinet

Currently, the side cabinets are being used as storage for some of Kitt's items but eventually it will be used for non-Star Wars props.

The rugs are temporary.
