The 8th Doctor's new costume - Night of the Doctor

By the way, thanks for the link to the spats tutorial, I've been puzzling all weekend about how I was going to draft a pattern to cut my leather - and I had a brain wave seeing the duck tape mold... brilliant! I think it's going to work quite well. Hopefully I'll have some time the coming days to have a go at it. I'll make a 'muslin' first, of course. Wouldn't want to waste my leather! Then, I need to find a leather punch and eyelets...
I've tried that tutorial (but had trouble finding tights big enough to go over boots and jumbo calves....just kept breaking) so I used this tutorial(basically the 2nd technique involved 'draping' the pattern). See here the tutorial I found. I've got my basic pattern ready. Made a mock up for one leg in calico to test it. Just need to get my supplies before I can get started.

Well nearly finished I need proper laces...and to work out how to stop the front crumpling up.

I like them a lot! Not sure how to fix the crumpling. Maybe it's because the material doesn't wrap properly around your leg? Do you have a curved seam at the back or it's just wrapped around your leg in one piece?

The wrinkles are because that's the wrong kind of leather. Only vegetable tanned leather will stretch and conform properly.

It has a curved back and front seam. I just appear too have no ankle. ;) First think is some kind of interfacing and maybe add more eyelets?

Its only Vinyl rather than leather. These are only gonna get used once or twice. If they work for a day I'll be happy.

Maybe add an extra layer under, a flap or something, like on these original ones from WWI? Scroll down for the pictures of the inside.

Hmmmm.... maybe a heavily interfaced 'tounge'/modesty panel at the front might work?

I was thinking about hot glue gun some millinary wire or pipe cleaners inside down the front next to the eyelets for more support. Yes. I'm of the if I can't afford it, bodge it type. lol!

Well here's my jacket so far...still a long way to go. and I've already made a few mistakes and had to modify plans

I know its a bit light the green...I didn't know whether to risk overdying it.
But still got to sew in sleeves (they are basted), add pockets then do lining/facing, then add buttons and hem. I think I might need shoulder pads with this style...mine just aren't wide enough.

Oh it looks lovely! Very Eight. I do recommend shoulder pads, it makes jackets and coats hang better. No need for huge ones maybe, but it does add some umpf. Might be a bit late, but you might want to consider a sleeve head too. Coupled with the shoulder pads, they give the shoulders and sleeves a more tailored look, without adding bulk.

If only I knew it was still debatable this coats colour, I could have asked him at the weekend! Do'h!!

Some nice Eight Night cosplayers at collectormania. I wonder if they post here?

I did infact meet him again at the recent collectomania and asked him about his coat...in costume :D...he said i looked fantastic, the best he had seen (whoop! *does little dance*) and that his jacket was in fact a "very dark green".

With what appears to be a bronze trim.

I do wish it wasn't double breasted though. Personal preference, I suppose :)

It isn't still up for debate. The coat's green.

QFE. Game over and done. Green as green gets when green gets really, really, really green. Did we mention it's green? Just in case you missed the green it's green as in green. Oh and for the hold outs: GREEN!!!

Do you know if the buttons were self fabric covered or different fabric? I'm trying to decide what ones to choose.
I too wish it wasn't double breasted...I prefer single or else I look too 'stocky'. ;)

I've basted on the sleeves again this time they sit better and added pockets. :)

The "snake buckle belt" was issued by the British in one form or another from the 1850's and are still being used today. The most common style are "Civil War" period and WWI. There are several militaria dealers who deal authentic replicas. If anyone needs a link, please let me know.
