The 8th Doctor's new costume - Night of the Doctor

Impressive. The coat is very well done!

DoctorEight... the coat was very simple... the top half is the jacket of a 2pc ladies suit/dress but alone the jacket was too short so he took the bottom 2/3 of the dress and used that for the frock tails. This is the method of "costume-making" I have taught him... try to find a base garment that comes as close to what you are looking for as possible (either style-wise or fabric-wise) then find other garments or material to make up the difference, and cut-and-paste it all together to fit it and fashion it into what you need.

Thanks for sharing! I have rather large calves, and would like to get the costume as close as I can to authentic.

Wow, that came out great!

This is my son's cosplay of "Night of the Doctor" ... all items shopped for at Goodwill and modified by hand... frock coat came from combining a woman's two-piece dress/jckt ensemble... vest is from combining two shirts... leggings were once an old leather vest, taken apart and reassembled, then dyed to match his boots... the sonic he 3D-printed at his school... total cost (minus the boots which he already had) about $30

Thanks for the comments and complements... I recently found a garment I think I can craft into Eight's movie frock and if it comes together as well in real life as I'm picturing it in my head, my son and I plan to cosplay as 'alpha' Eight and 'omega' Eight later this year. (most likely at Chicago Tardis)

The coat that he wears in a town called mercy is a different coat to the one that he wears in late series 6, but it is still green, i think.

I was at Gallifrey One last weekend, and a friend of mine did an excellent reproduction of 'The Night of The Doctor' costume (he's an amazing tailor), and showed it to Paul McGann, who then posed in a picture with it on. Mr McGann was taken by how accurate it was, 'even down to the colour.'

Sorry, Zeppo; the man who WORE the coat says it's green. Case closed.

Hi all - have been watching the Doctor Who discussions on this forum for awhile and thought I'd finally jump in, register and comment :)

Now that the jacket's resolved, how about the waistcoat?

I saw the pic of McGann wearing the costumers jacket from Gallifrey One, and the costumer's waistcoat looked to me to be similar to this one from Gentlemen's Emporium: Cavalier Vest - Brown

But then I've also seen this waistcoat suggested as an option as one that is very, very close. I can definitely see the similarities between this and the promo shot, especially after weathering: STEAMPUNK VICTORIAN WAISTCOAT! DOCTOR WHO WAISTCOAT COSTUME | eBay

Either way, it looks to me like the waistcoat is heavily weathered/dirtied and the buttons darkened with an ink wash or the like.

I have also heard from Galley One attendees that there were two versions of the costume that differed slightly; one for the promo shot and one for the actual minisode. Haven't been able to get confirmation as to which pieces differed, however.

And for the pants:

Yup, definitely brown! And likely a canvas/denim/heavy cotton type material. But what about the cut? High-waisted Victorian style, or more modern?

Would you recommend something like this? (accurate styled frontier work pants): Canvas Field Trousers - Walnut

Or this (vintage but with a more modern lower waisted fit): Broomfield Pants - Brown

So have we arrived at a consensus as to what color the vest is? I want to say brown but some of the behind the scene pics say otherwise.

I think it's dark brown or black with gold patterning, but so heavily weathered/dirtied that the shine is gone from the gold and it looks like a contrasting shade of brown.

Any idea what fabric the coats are made of?

I always assumed the Night of the Doctor coat was a cotton fabric like the 11th Doctor's moleskin greatcoat, although the Mercy one may be cotton or a silk velvet so I'm not too sure. The Mercy one also seems to have cuffs and lapels of a different shade of green and plain black lining.

I'm trying to put together a 'female' version of the NOTD 8th doc costume (It's Edwardian meets 1870's Got 1870's bodice (waistcoat), I've got an 1910's skirt and I'm going to make some gaiters. Still got to make the shirt and the coat though.) Having trouble finding the right material for the coat.
My alt versions tend to be inspire by rather than exact copies. But its been really useful reading everyones comments. DSCN3472.JPG
Although I may change the skirt to brown if I have time.

I like the idea of Alt Versions. I'm trying to (or at least thinking about) putting together a Hybrid 8, culling together ideas from all three versions (TV Movie, Big Finish, NOTD).

Good idea. The outfit in my avatar was meant to be the movie version mixed with the big finish version. So it was a blue velvet frock coat (lucky find in a shop years ago I put aside just in case). The leather bag. With the movie shirt and cravat.

Very nice on both accounts! Continued luck!

Hi everyone! Glad I found this thread, very inspiring! I made my first cosplay ever a couple of weeks ago, with my version of my beloved 8th Doctor's outfit in The Night of the Doctor. All pieces of clothing I made myself, only the props and accessories are purchased. I had great fun making this outfit, and now all I want to make is costumes! haha

Here are some pictures of my outfit (never mind the wrinkles, I had been sitting all afternoon attending panel discussions at Antwerp Con!):

It's not 100% identical, let's say I was in a time crunch and on a very tight budget, and my aim was to use fabric from my (huge) stash as much as possible. You can read some posts on my blog, I'm currently writing a series of posts detailing the making of my outfit: Couturlututu

My next projects: a 4th Doctor outfit for my husband, and some Marvel's Captain America costumes for myself... but that's a different thread altogether.

Cool outfit. What pattern did you use for the coat?

Laughing Moon 109 Frock Coat & Vest. I went for the contrasting silk on the collar, even though the original costume didn't have it haha I just thought it looked nice...

Thanks. I was looking at that pattern but thought I might need to make too many modifications to fit me. I find unless something shows my waist I tend to look like I'm drowning in fabric. lol! How did you find it to fit?
I was thinking of using this for my jacket. As it has the two back vents.
I'll have to add you to my bloglovin account follow list. :)
