The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Lookin' good Matt. You've got quite the journey ahead but it will be worth it in the end. Nate has my old 89 prop car. Just a tip - resin by itself adds no strength, best to grind that out and fill the body seams with Marglass- works for me and I've got 30 b cars under my belt:)

Your build is just all kinds of impressive. The videos are really well done. Bo needs his own show! I could listen to him talk about cars for days.

Donc, thanks for the tip. I will look into Marglass tonight.

Khal, I agree! Bo is quite a character, and extremely knowledgeable. I'm extremely lucky to have him onboard for this build.

Wow, this project is really flying along. Of course it's still early days but it's great to see you going about it with so much planing and forward thinking. Funny to see the Chev V's Ford topic pop up for a few posts. hahaha petrol heads!

There really hasn't been a car since the 89 thats made such an impact (fast and furious cars :lol). IMHO the tumbler is a bit naff.
Anyway very cool work and cheers for posting the videos too.

This is.....best thread ever...! That would be a good category if RPF ever starts an awards show. Cant wait for updates.

Paul

Matt, if you want to expedite your build even more so I am more than happy to give lots of my 89 build info I got through trial and errors till correct ie interior cage size, dropped floor info, fuel cell location, fill neck info, sliding canopy secrets, steering column extension tips, dash,, console heights/width,brake pedal relocation, gas pedal linkage extend info, hinges how to,parts source, bodymount locations etc..

I broke out ye olde spray gun tonight and did the first coat of heavy build primer on a few parts I've been sanding lately. DEFINITELY slow going, but progress nonetheless.

And the garage smells of hell.

Matt, if you have the chassis drivable and the body not on yet(if I'm following the thread correctly) I'd recommend getting on a seat belt, and driving it like mad. drive it as much as possible. Get the insurance plates, reg. if you have to. but drive it. this makes sure that while everthing is easy to access, you will see if anything is loose, or leaking, needs to be adjusted etc. if it shakes at Xmph. make sure the U joints are phased properly. Stuff like that. Of course you may be way ahead of me, not sure.
On the priming and sanding(again just in case u haven't tried this). Try a porter cable orbital sander. use about 40grit sticky. and wear a RESPIRATOR. Not a dust mask. But having said that, the oribital sanders tend not to throw dust nearly as bad as other sanders. also great for a nice even sand. avoid belt sanders. Other sanders tend to do nothing, or not much. this is a just in case you haven't comment.

Doody's right -orbital is the way to go...I use #36 grit cuts even faster.
I don't know if your bodyshell has box tubing pre glassed in it but you may want to do that now before you attempt the mount - layers of 6- 12ozcloth and resin is good to laminate 1"tubing in and easy to work with..or you could use the two part epoxy bond..much less of the HellSmell

Not quite there yet, though that's definitely a good idea. It's going to depend entirely on how the project pipelines itself. And yes, always a respirator!

I have an orbital sander, and it's been getting a good workout. Good stuff.

DonC, thanks for the insight on infrastructure. I had stuff like that planned, but I will incorporate some of your comments into the build. thanks again :D

So far today has been body work. Just working on the gas cap inserts, and cleaning up one of the seams. Just working it all out little by little, getting familiar with the materials and tools, etc.
