The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Just curious.. are you going to be adding any cross angle bracing in the frame extension area? You may have mentioned this already, I haven't read through every page yet. If not, I would recommend it to minimize frame twisting from engine torque or from cornering.

Matt, take the day off. I got these...

Hey Matt, I don't know if this was covered but are you making the car rear wheel, front wheel, or all wheel drive?

Also what is that engine? Is it a 4cyl?

Rear Wheel. Matt is not about to spend money on changing the drive system. No need to.

Chevy 350 8 cyl.

I vote turbine!!
A bit over kill...but wow!

No...

Captain EO: So with the chassis stretch, are you going to add cross-members or anything else for structural support?

MattMunson: Absolutely. I haven't yet planned out how many or where, but there will be a bunch. Good call :D

CJS: Triangulating is your friend. I hung out a chassis shop that built pro-mod race cars.
Nice fat x-brace with gussets to triangulate the brace itself.

MattMunson: Good tip! Thank you sir! ;)

:lol

Thanks Fyfe, I wasn't sure which drive system the car had before and was just wondering.

Now for the engine: :love:love:love:love Awesome, my friend dropped one of those into his mustang. It was very cool. Also this was probably mentioned somewhere that I missed, but is it manual or automatic transmission?

I vote turbine!!

Trust me man, don't go there...... I'll forever be scared :D

Jedifyfe, you are officially hired as my PR guy. Thank you sir!!! lol. I should add a couple of those to the faq.

I'm off to buy some lug nuts for the rims. I didn't realize it at the time, but they require 'special' lugs.

Actually Brad I hate to correct you but 350 was the common measurement(Cubic Inch Displacment) for anything before fuel injection, afterword they started referring to it Liters the measurement for this would be 5.7 Liters. Just a fyi =)

Neo as this car was formerly a Chevrolet Caprice(talked bout in previous pages I think about page 24) it would probably have either a 305(5.0L) or 350(5.7L). The trans is clearly automatic as you can see no hole in the top of the trans where a stick for a shifter would go. Also you can clearly make out a Torque Converter these again are found on Automatics.

As far as "your friend dropping one of those into his mustang" it was probably a 300(5.0) ford motor as the only time chevy motors are dropped in fords is in 20,30,40's Fords.

/\ great education Andrew. I never knew that. Pretty cool to learn something like that
This

The owner of the mustang was probably mistaken in the engine type then as I only asked him what was in it while we were driving around in the car and the extent of my knowledge on the engine in the car ends there.

As for being able to tell what the transmission is, I've just now started learning about transmissions, all of my car knowledge is pretty basic, just enough to keep my car and my parent's car's running, and since I have the only American car, my knowledge on American cars is even smaller, when I got the mustang I thought it had a central jack point like my father's galant and ended up bending the radiator housing :facepalm then I couldn't figure out how to get my serpentine belt off at first :unsure then I bought a haynes and Chiltons :) .

Awesome, one thing I would, from a mechanical engineering point of view, is to add some frame structure and cross bracing vertically upward. Maybe around your engine, and/or to act as mounts for the shell. Basically, turn that long flat frame into more of a rectangular box for rigidity, with the same gusseting as already described here. :)

That would be a 302 :) .. though I have seen people drop chevy 350s into older mustangs.. they like the look of the mustang, but prefer the chevy engine... seen it 4 or 5 time on Mustangs from the 60s and late 80s/early 90s

I have to imagine that Matt has all that in place. I believe that legally there heeds to be a firewall in between the engine and the cab.

That is one thing you will always get with me when it comes to car talk. A major education :).

Ohh I stand corrected, I always seem to make that mistake. Since I am a chevy guy I am used to having CID drop in 5's so just make the mistake of a chevy 305 and drop 5 off it. However you are right is a 302(or 5.0 whichever you prefer to call it). Good call thank you Chris. I have not seen it ever in a mustang, I guess cause I do not know enough people with older mustangs. Most ford guys I know have fords made pre 1960

I think folks just like the chevy 350.. such a long track record and great performance... great availability for parts and such, real cheap.. pretty much can't go wrong with one. :)

Productive day today. Went back to sears to buy a socket that will fit my new lug nuts, and also an extender for the 1/2" ratchet. I made another pass at the nose cone too. Sanded down all the black primer, and then put some putty on all the flaws I found.

For reference, that primer is AMAZING. rock solid, and very nice. Sticks like crazy too. I wonder how appropriate it would be to use that on hand props and smaller projects. It's funny, the more I stray from Home Depot and Auto Zone, the more I realize just how mickey mouse all of the stuff they sell is.

Got my new lug nuts, and installed them today.

Matt hard to tell from the pics and not sure if we talked about it the last time I was over for your kick off party but did you get those special wheel lock lugs where you need a certain tool to get them off? I ask as this is a good way to prevent someone from stealing your rims. Although I think you will be in more danger of someone stealing the whole Matt Moblie.

non locking lugs. And your reasoning is correct.

By the way, why is EVERY post of yours about theft and my car?? :p

I was not intending this one to be, but figured I had to mention that people would want the car more then the rims probably. Also I think you know why they are all about theft of your car :$

I see you STILL haven't gotten the memo about this topic? Please try to keep the thread about the car, not about your desire to steal it. I've asked you about this in person, but I guess it didn't stick. I think it sends a bad message to anyone else reading the thread who does not know you.

Thanks.
