The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

That wasn't directed to you JS, more to some of the oddball PMs I've gotten :D

Honestly I did'nt think it was and I'm sure with the way I was writing my responses everyone else knew I was jokeing too. I'm sure some of those PMs were pretty interesting and laughable though. :lol

Lear, a fellow builder had that exact same hoist thing listed on his blog, and I was thinking of copying him. I'm STILL getting conflicting measurements from different folks on the actual size of the thing, so I guess ultimately I will wait until it shows up and goes from there. If that means I have to store it on its side, diagonally across my garage for a day or two, so be it. :D

Another interesting twist.

I contacted a fellow builder who is building off the exact same shell I am getting. His garage is the exact same size as mine... and the shell fits.

Not sure where the math is getting mixed up, but I guess at the end of the day, I'll worry about it when the car arrives.

In other news, the total project cost JUST crossed the 15k mark! lol.

My goal is to finish under 30k. The tires and hubs are going to run me 2,500, and the steel will set me back a bit. Other than that, it's going to be labor. The more that I think about it, I realize I will probably end up hiring local guys to do most of the work. Not only do I NOT want to be sitting on this project for the next 10 years, but I'd also really like to get it done right. Don't get me wrong, I'll still be doing A LOT of work myself. But all of the critical and important components of the car will probably end up being outsourced.

Ultimately outsourceing the critical parts will save you money if you built it then had to redu it, not to mention your safety while driving it. I'm not saying you could'nt do it by any means but peace of mind goes a long way. On another note, it certainly would be nice if the shell fits in the garage after the concern arose. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Yeah, that is the direction I'm headed. Just not sure of the logistics of it. for example, it'll probably take more than one day to glass those things into place properly. Where to store while the glass cures??

And for reference, before anyone actually asks, I will be the ONLY person to drive this car. I'll be happy to give out rides all the time, but nobody drives the MattMobile except MattMunson :)

What ???? not even Batman ????

If your a bit trick, you could also make some double hinges for the front so that it lifts & rocks back (clearing the canopy), if you can design them to rock back enough you may be able to park the car in you garage just by opening the front.

HTH :)

How would he get out if the front clip is over top the canopy? :facepalm If the clip goes back the amount of the front overhang, it looks like it'll be right over the seats.

I was assuming the canopy was already open

This is what I had in mind hinging the front:

Builders have done stuff like that, all in different ways. I think I'm going to wait until the shell shows up before I start seriously thinking about it, as I'm guessing everything will change when it arrives.

Tonight I drained the fuel cell from the caprice and chucked it.

Frees up a little room in the garage.

Hey gang, just a quick heads up. I've got an album running on my facebook page that consolidates all of my photos into one place. I am leaning towards documenting the build more heavily over there and on my blog, if only so I don't have to cross post so much.

so if you'd like to follow along, please find me there under MattMunson OnTheWeb.

There's a guy up here that has one of these running around and he had it at a '80's toy convention. It was supposedly casted from the original. Street legal and driven. He knows my friend that works the shows. I could maybe get his dimensions and PM them to you. He asked me to fab up two working gatling guns to pop out of the fenders. I could try find out, he was really nice and I don't think he would be all top secret lol. It was long for sure.

Matt, are you planning on keep it an automatic or switching it to a manual trans. That's something that has been bouncing around the back of my head for a bit.

The less work, the better chances of me finishing. So yes, I'll be leaving it automatic. I hate manual transmission anyway, so no worries :)
