The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

A new video was delivered to art a few days ago. I am just waiting for him to post it. AND, I've already got another episode filmed. I just need to edit it together.

There actually hasn't been much mattmobile progress in the past few days. I'm waiting to get ahold of my welding guy. There's really not that much more work I can do until the shell arrives. I will probably do some parts buying in the interim, but that's it for right now.

Don't worry, I'll keep the pics and progress updates coming as the are available :)

I just called a junk hauler, and they are coming by today to pick up the extra Caprice parts. Yay, now I'll have room to maneuver in my garage!

WOAH! that was fast. Haulers were here and gone in fifteen minutes. Second best 100 bucks I've ever spent on the caprice. (Window removal was the first!!!)

Nice work so far Matt. I hope you saved all your brake and steering components. How long is your garage? The bodyshell is 19'6". I'd use the KISS principle and leave the engine where it is and just use a bearing support for a 2 piece driveshaft. My 89 is the true widebody and fits fine on a standard car trailer ..if you know how to load it, but thats why the boys at cltc never talk about my 89. Kudos to keeping your enthusiasm up...you'll need all of it and then some with the $7k kit. My 89 loaded kits are 3x times that much..ie pre painted base clear black, full steel subframe and mounting tabs, full steel occupant tub and full steel interior and all parts but everything's relative eh...price vs time:)

Thanks for the kind words, donc. One of the things that I'm most excited about today regarding the state of the hobby is the wide range of options a builder has. it's a lot like the R2 builders club, in that there are turn-key solutions, scratch build solutions, and everything in between.

For example, the skins. You can buy pre-cut, pre-rolled aluminum skins. Or you can buy laser cut styrene skins. Or you can buy a sheet of styrene, download the plans from the builders club, and cut it yourself with an x-acto blade! I think this is great, as it means there are no barriers to entry for an interested and dedicated builder.

When I first started investigating 89 car building about ten years ago, things were very different, as you know. I'm super happy to see the hobby evolve the way it has, and one of the things that excites me most about this build is all of the new skills I will need to learn in order to get the thing finished. For me, that's about 80% of the fun.

And you're absolutely right about the price vs. time comment. I could not agree more. Which is another reason the hobby is so great: a builder has options. You can literally purchase a finished car, or you can buy the rawest of kits. I love it. It's a great time to be alive for us Batman fans!

Matt, I'll trade you my all steel 89 dash and 2 door panels for an aluminum R2 Shell.

I've decided to take a stab at this kit, while I'm waiting for my body to arrive:

I got a couple of progress pictures on the shell today. it's REALLY coming together! Barring catastrophe, it should be here pretty soon.

I'm still in a holding pattern on the MattMobile, but progress on other projects continues. My voyager compression rifle speed build is coming along really well.

And I'm also making a lot of progress in the R&D of some mermaid skin.
