The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

God, I can't imagine what that feels like Matt. To have your dream "prop" right there in front of you after 23 years must feel amazing. Congrats and even with all the seams and much work to do, it looks beautiful!

Cody, the guy who drove it out here, said the ENTIRE way over he was surrounded by cars trying to get into position to snap a picture. :lol

You know, with the way things are going Matt, your MattMobile may be as well known as the screen used one by the time you're done building it!!!

(y)thumbsup

Awesome!

And as I posted in the comments on YouTube.

Awesome! And with the new hair cut, the cowl will fit better too!

Like a kid... That BOUGHT the candy store!

Contrats man!

My face hurts from smiling from that one!

Just subscribed.

This is an amazing build, and its amazing you are putting together these videos.

Kindo of like watching one of those reality shows on Discovery, but instead of watching complete butt holes, we get to see a great guy build something he loves (man crush alert!).

Im wondering , do you have a budget for this build mate?

weequay

Also, can you do me a favour and make enbough leg room to accomodate someone who is 6'7"???........ Please please please!

Hah! that is a great way of putting it sir!! It is indeed a pretty wild feeling, I must confess. Just such a long road to get here.

I'm super glad that everyone is enjoying the vids, and thanks SO much for comparison the the Discovery shows. I'm flattered not only that you are finding some similarities, but also that all the lame elements are missing. If only there was a bigger audience for drama free television, I might actually be on to something :)

Seriously though everyone, thanks so much for the support and the kudos. The main reason I'm making those videos is for you guys, so it's really great to know they are being enjoyed!

Honestly, I"d love to get finished with phase one for under 30k. I fear that it might go a few thousand higher than that to get it finished, but I'm ok with that. As long as I can get it driving for 30k, I'll be happy.

I will of course, do a write up of what happens in each phase, but I"ll leave that for another post.

Incredible!!! Can't imagine how excited you are to have the build and the shell side-by-side in your garage!

How are you gonna work on the car half? Do you have room enough? Or will you move them and work in a shop etc?

It's a tight fit, but there's enough room in the garage. It'll be a little cumbersome until I get the shell mounted on the chassis (which could be a while, mind you) but there's room.

Also, I don't know what exactly constitutes "blowin' up", but holy cow my youtube channel is growing fast! Wasn't it just a day or two ago that I was all excited to have my 100th subscriber? As of right now, I have 140! Craziness I tell you! Thanks everyone for all the support on the channel! It's really fun to see it growing.

Matt it is always great to have a budget for a car build. I have seen to many Classic cars for sale that are "90% restored" and then need to be sold to pay the credit card bill for the restoration because, they had no budget planned for the build.

However as far as your figure goes, for phase 1 that is a nice round number. If I were you though and depending on how crazy you want to go with your build, after our talk if I were you I might be ready to spend a few extra Grand. However this all depends on how crazy you want to get with things like Baer Brakes(aftermarket brakes), the internals of the Engine(if you are still planning on having it rebuilt). It would also depend entirely on how much work you want to DIY. However certain things I would Leave up to Professionals. One good example would be something like

A)Engine Rebuild- However there is no reason you could not save yourself a little time money and learn a little something by tearing down the motor yourself. This would be something I would be more then happy to help with. However I would seriously advise letting a professional do the machining work, and rebuilding it with new components.

As I am in class right now on my break I will not provide you with a complete list of things you could DIY, and things you may want to contract out. However expect one in your PM inbox in the next few days.

Chevy, in general, I have no intention of doing any non-trivial mechanical work to the car. Is it stands, the caprice ran just fine before I tore it apart. I will of course need to get everything re-hooked up, but that'll be the extent of it for phase one, and probably forever. After a lot of thought and consideration, I've come to the conclusion that what I'm building is a batmobile replica, not a hot rod. I don't want/need it to go fast. I don't need amazing handling. I just need it to sit there and look pretty, and occasionally go for a light drive. This will not go on the freeway. It'll just go around the block, or onto a trailer.

With that said, I think I can avoid things like re-building the engine, or even adding in a new engine. Don't get me wrong, I totally appreciate your suggestions and expertise... BUT it's outside the scope of this project :D

I understand where you are coming from, and I will respect your decision. However I would at least advise taking the engine and transmission to be examined and such by a professional. This way you will at least know how the condition of the Engine and Transmission, and if you may need any work done on them. You never know how good a engine and transmission will be after sitting for a few years no matter how many miles on them, because rust and dirty fluids can cause your engine or trans to have problems after running again for a few miles. I know of a few very reputable shops who could do check your engine and transmission, if you do decide to have this done. This cost would be very slight(Probably a few Hundred dollars). If you decide not to that is fine too, but I think with the engine and transmission being such easy access, now would be the time.

I imagine there are a lot people living precariously through you... Me for one, I sure there are are many that would kill to have a "real" Batmobile and a "working" prop of this scale just just blows my mind... It good to see it getting the attention it rightly deserves...
