Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?
ANH clamp position is very comfortable to hold with bunny ears pointing in your direction. Clamp would sit in a position you can put your thumb on (if you hold it in your right hand).
ESB clamp position is very comfortable to hold with yout thumb resting on it when the bunny ears are pointing away from you.
It's just like in the picutre above. You can't hold a Graflex with ESB clamp position comfortable in your left hand while bunny ears pointing away from you.
Ok maybe you can hold it that way, but you can't wield it.
I had the SW technical journals and went off that for the lightsaber functions(still do). I remember after getting my first G R A F L E X and being kinda "huh?!" after opening the box, when I moved the clamp lever only for it to come loose(first time accidental disassembly, lol.
Now the one thing that I've come to notice recently with the TFA trailers, Boyega holds it with the longer portion of the cut out, S curve what have you and the bunny ears towards him and clamp down. In all my umm "handling and studying" of my ESB saber, I've held it just the opposite where my thumb would be on the activation box and the bunny ears would be positioned away from me. This seems more natural to me, even though "would" have more exposed blade to your body than the other way as it would be "guarded" from the blade by the cut out and bunny ears.
