TFA Graflex Research (That's a Graflex, right? Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

I always figured that one does turn on the G R A F L E X lightsaber with the top red button and the bubblestrip or circuitboard was to intensify the lenght and power of the beam :)

I like it!!! Although my 2005 MR Vader ESB turns on via the bubble, as well as my Black Series Luke ANH.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

Hamill always used the circuit board/bubbles but many of the prequel sabers had red buttons for power. It feels like an either/or thing. Maybe the red is a toggle and the circuit board is a momentary/dead-man's switch so that the thing turns off when it's released/dropped.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

Yea, it;s obviously open to interpretation, being sci-fi and all, but In nearly all of the iconic scenes Mark Hamill had his thumb on the clamp.
ANH - Ben's hut
- Falcon training I think
ESB - it was suggested off screen, as he would lift the saber and still have his hand around the middle

ROTJ - turning off saber in front of the Emperor

Well on the OT visual dictionary actually the red button and glasseye were supposed to be used for power instead. And like thd9791 says, even during the ESB battle Luke always has his finger on the circuit board to keep it on, I was planning on making a prop with a 7w blue laser on it, making it turn on from the clamp but using the red button as a safety switch, somewhat like E Williams mentions.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

Read #5 in this schematic : Neonic control switch [for controlling polarity of [1] to enable lenses to generate lightwaves to specified lenght and intensity]

... so I wasn't that far off :wacko

Maybe the circuit is a bioscan safety "activator" and the red button is the "igniter" so to speak. [emoji851]

Maybe it's camera equipment used as a prop in a movie meaning none of this matters. *dodges punches and runs away while grinning*

How dare you,....you are totally right,...we must have this explained,....yeah it's just a movie,....who do you think you are,........we must talk to John Boyega and see what they told him and make sure it lines up with what Mark Hamill was told and cross reference the info,...... for crying out loud the original movie was not even that good,.... what?????????????

I'm not Bob Dole but I approve this message. In fact, I think it should be church doctrine.

Promo pic for Tuesday's ESPN lightsaber show. Tell me that seeing Hamill holding a Graflex doesn't make you want to squeal like a little girl (come on, you can say it, we're all friends here).

As for activating the beast, knowing Uncle George's directing style any bets that he simply never told anyone how it's supposed to work?

"What am I supposed to do here, George?"

"Just stand there and wave it around a bit."

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

just came on here to link your post probe droid, wicked cool photo!!

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

Hamill tweeted the pic. Saw it this morning and have been grinning all day (me and every other saber dog).

And everyone always acts like lens flare was something JJ Abrams came up with. Star Wars and lens flare go hand in hand. In fact the first time I as a person remember ever seeing lens flare in a movie is when the Fulcan saves the day at the end of ANH (during the Yee-whoo!).

I had the SW technical journals and went off that for the lightsaber functions(still do). I remember after getting my first G R A F L E X and being kinda "huh?!" after opening the box, when I moved the clamp lever only for it to come loose(first time accidental disassembly, lol.

Now the one thing that I've come to notice recently with the TFA trailers, Boyega holds it with the longer portion of the cut out, S curve what have you and the bunny ears towards him and clamp down. In all my umm "handling and studying" of my ESB saber, I've held it just the opposite where my thumb would be on the activation box and the bunny ears would be positioned away from me. This seems more natural to me, even though "would" have more exposed blade to your body than the other way as it would be "guarded" from the blade by the cut out and bunny ears.

Yea, for me this image is the epitome of Star Wars and I thought the less-edited version had the bunny ears facing away.

Re: That's a Graflex, right (Force Awakens teaser trailer #2)?

I'm pretty sure that Mark Hamill holding the Graflex with the bunny ears away from him, had to with the position of the clamp and the fact that he is right-handed. It can be uncomfortable to hold it the other way around for some "righties"... though Boyega does so anyways.
