Tempest T-65 X-Wing build

Re: My 30" Hero series X-wing build

Thanks Rogue and Homecine!

No worries Rogue I don't think you're hijacking my thread, I'm just happy I'm getting feedback on this thing:p

Re: My 30" Hero series X-wing build

So, moving forward from the rear most part of the engine I just completed for casting, I will revisit and post any scale details I will add to that section of the model, I started working on the larger engine "can" section.
I'm trying VERY hard not to use other modellers X-wing projects for references, although all are incredibly brilliant projects I just don't want to **** anyone off and
hope I can keep my project as close to the ILM film production models as possible.:p I'm completely open to positive suggestions and help so please don't hesitate!

I'm probably flogging a dead horse here but as some have noted already and in my opinion, there are quite a few differences between the
ILM X-wings and lets say the models Revell or MPC produce etc..
I feel the people that built these ships were artists (also why i can't stand CGI) and poring over these photos and research is exciting and a great trip down memory lane.
A lot of work will be going into this project, even if its a cheap toy to some, I don't see it that way.

I'll never forget seeing A New Hope in the theater for the first time when I was a 8 year old little girl, wide eyed and excited to see those X-wings screaming down that tench!
Had a childhood Star Wars crush on Wedge Antilles, :love and was always my X-wing of choice when playing with my brothers/ friends! I always thought it would be totally cool to have a giant Red 2 on display in my living room!:devil Under glass in a custom built coffee table! hmmmmm....

Re: My 30" Hero series X-wing build

Moving forward, looking at reference pics.
There's is a lip on the ILM engine can where it meets the rear firewall (as I call it).
StarWars1977-JohnDykstra1.jpgenginemod11.jpg

I've cut out that rear firewall and will rebuild this section in 1.5mm poly-styrene. There is also detail on the surface of that
firewall that I haven't seen on the ILM ANH models but only the ROTJ model...can anyone confirm this for me please? I'd like to stick with ANH details.

Re: My 30" Hero series X-wing build

This is really coming along great! Can't wait to see more progress... I know I thought about doing this myself and the first thing I was thinking was getting two of them so I could use the spare wings from the second to make the bottom pair of wings. Just trim them to the width of a sing wing and use some styrene sheets to fill in the hollowed wings. Just a thought!

I don't believe there is any detail in that section because it was always in shadow, here's a good look at the actual studio miniature for confirmation for ya:

I thought the same thing. It is possible to do that, especially if you're careful in trimming along the center line of the wings.
I'm going to pick up another X-wing to cast the entire fuselage from after adding/ eliminating corrected scale details to it.
Believe it or not the internal engines are also molded on this toy and can be utilized, just have to look for them.;)

Sweet! you rock, this is the kind of help I'm looking for.
Is this an actual ILM or is this the 4ft. re-production model?

I remember years ago building a ROTJ X-wing, it had the detail of the Hasbro model but to keep it to ANH I won't build it into the firewall.

Re: My 30" Hero series X-wing build

These are pics that were taken at the Smithsonian I believe of the actual Red 3... but I believe that each of them had little differences. I know the Red 3 had the tapered section of the engine cones and Red 2 was a bit shorter then the others. But the engines themselves were made from an old Saturn V rocket kit if I'm not mistaken. I'll do some more research and letcha know.

Re: My 30" Hero series X-wing build

This is the 4ft Red 3 bird. It started as a side project and was built at ILM during the making of Return Of the Jedi.

According to Sculpting A Galaxy an idea was put forward about doing a large Hero X-Wing at which point Mike Fulmer came out saying that he and Ira Keeler had been working on one in their down time. The project was approved and appears to have been filmed but SAG also states it was cut from the film.

Is this an actual ILM or is this the 4ft. re-production model?

I thought it looked like the 4ft. X-wing..Thanks JP

Re: My 30" Hero series X-wing build

Time for an update on this project!

So, working forward from the rear most completed engine, I've cut out the rear firewall
to add better detail to that section and a mounting hole for the 1/2" PVC to pass through.

1.5mm polystyrene replacement firewall and reinforcement ring, scratch built.
1/2" inner diameter on the firewall and ring.

The bottom most, rectangle shaped, surface was also re-built in polystyrene.
comparison between the progress of the lip I was trying to achieve and the original part on the right.

Details added to finish off this engine section. I think it looks 100% better than the
original part, plus it's easier to mount the rear engine section.

No prob darlin... the progress is looking great so far. I've always loved the X-Wing... I think I've built about 30 of them in my time, but always tend to go with Red 5. I dunno... just a preference of mine!
