Teaser: My new lightsaber "working" blade

Dude start on my Darth Maul :D I have been crying for 3 months now :D
So does this mean..my maul will feature V2? That would be uber-amazing.

I have been waiting to convert my maul until the v2 driver was complete. Now that it is done I can finally start. I wanted the dual-intensity clash feature on my maul saber - finally.... :)

ok, finally got around to testing the new v2 driver w/ 11V battery versus the v1 driver w/ 7.2V battery.

Here are some preliminary numbers using a light meter:

MR Anakin FX blue: 210 lux
Hyperblade green v1 blade/v1 driver (7.2V): 1550 lux
Hyperblade green v1 blade/v2 driver (11.1V): 2900 lux

So going by the numbers, the v2 driver @11V at the highest level of brightness is about 1.8x brighter than the v1 driver @ 7.4V. Which is in turn 13.8x brighter than an MR FX saber or similar Luxeon.

Again, I pumped up the brightness to max, which isnt typical since you would want the brightness a bit lower so you could use the new dual-intensity clash feature. The default brightness setting on the v2 driver board gives out 1500lux with the green blade (similar to the v1 brightness now).

Thus if you ran the v2 driver at this default brightness level similar to a v1 driver, you would be able to use the clash feature that would flash the saber at 2x the brightness during clash events. That should be pretty cool.

And for those who just want a much brighter blade, they can increase the blade brightness, which will make the clash feature look more like the current ClashEffect (since the difference between the blade brightness and max clash brightness will be smaller).

Yes, the MR FX saber hilts can be converted. That is what I have been using. :)

ok, first pic. Exposed at 0.4" F2.8. It was overexposed to give you an idea of the integrated light from each saber.

Here you can tell the v2 driver is putting out much more light than the v1. The v2 is at max brightness. And the paltry MR fx hardly gives you the sense that is it on. :eek

Thanks, yeah the luxeons are really good for dueling but they are not all that bright IMO (on par with an FX saber). Plus I dont care for the 2' dark spot in the luxeon blades. Some people like them though, so it all comes down to personal taste.

I have been really trying to develop a different type blade - one that you can duel with and also still have all the proper lighting effects. Heck who I am kidding, I really want it to look like a real saber. :lol

On another note, our v2 driver boards are finally completed.. We have added many new features and upped the brightness to the blades. It's getting pretty crazy with all the progress. I hope the new driver adds in all the collective features a saber enthusiast would want for a working saber prop.

Here is a summary of the new features that will be included in the v2 driver boards:

1) Dual-intensity ClashEffect. During a clash event you now experience a super-bright flash from the blade. It's really cool and adds "realism" to saber play. Imagine 2 blades contacting and throwing off super bright flashes.

2) MovieFlicker mode - emulates the old-school blade shimmering most noticeable in the OT rotoscoping method (like the ANH obi wan saber).

3) Selectable blade brightness. You can now dial in how bright you want your blade. You can start with the v1 brightness of 1500 lux and dial it way up to a searing 3000 lux.

4) Selectable blade ignition speed. You can now dial in how fast you want the blade to ignite.

5) Battery selectable mode for 7V or 11V battery packs.

The standard CorePulse effect is still included as well. I revamped the pushbutton interface so you can still control all these features with the single pushbutton mounted on the hilt.

Best of all, the v2 driver board is backwards compatible with all v1 blade boards and sound units. :)

EXCELLENT ...

I'm an idiot when it comes to installing things so *IF* you decide to take on some building commissions please let me know ..

I'd like a parks graflex replica converted.

Jim,

Chris Lee here - finally got to join the RPF.

Your blade conversions look sweet. Put me down for one when you get them ready for sale.

Thanks man. I am working on the v2 drivers as we speak. Hopefully they will be done in the next week. That way people can easily upgrade their blade and use all the new features and brightness gains.

Chris, good to see you here.

If I ever get around to doing full up conversions I will certainly make it known.

I am hoping to have a couple customers show off their sabers at comic-con. Hopefully things will go as planned...

5) Battery selectable mode for 7V or 11V battery packs.

What type of battery configuration is this?

Why not use a 9v or a double 9v?

To make a blade this bright, you need a powerful battery. A standard 9V would not be able to supply the same amount of current as a 7V Li+ rechargable battery pack. Also it makes your blade like your cell phone, plug it in if you need to fill'er up rather than continually buying 9V batteries.

Congrats on the v2 advances HD

Gator engineers in the house

Listen to CriticalMass you do.

The battery setup is for an li-ion batt pack, or even a Nimh/nicad pack. Any battery in the specified voltage range is fine, as long as it can source the needed current.

You need a good battery to achieve great things. A paltry 9V wont do the job. You might be able to use a lithium 9V battery for some time, but at $10 a pop that gets expensive. That is why you need a good rechargeable system IMO.

On another front, I finally started converting my Mace FX. Should be fun, the disassembly was pretty straight forward. I am thinking of making the top knobs functional. I need to think of how to install everything as the layout is a tad different - and those small details really need to be worked out first. No need to dive in without a good plan.

Plus if things go as planned, I hope to have 2-3 converted Hyperblade sabers at Comic con this weekend. :)

can I order one of these kits yet? Kind of hard to tell on website?
[/b]

Yeah. You can order them. If it says it's out of stock then it's out of stock. But most stuff seems to be in stock. Most of the buttons say add to cart.
