Teaser: My new lightsaber "working" blade

Hi Jim,
I haven't been on this board in quite awhile, and I don't think I've been in touch since meeting you at CIII. I remember your talking about making some kind of ultimate saber, and it's wonderful to see the results of your vision. I'd better start arranging some kind of direct deposit from my paychecks to you right now.. I too am thinking about modifying my MR hilts with your kits, but I also have several graflex hilt replicas from different makers, Larbel's last MPP Vader ANH hilt(so he claimed), a custom Windu ATOC EL(the purple blade is so bad it looks like a weak blacklight with streaks), and a couple of the old Larbel plasma hilts that never got blades and electronics(a Maul and a Qui Gon). The plasma hilts only have about an inch ID to work with. I'd love to see some of these get fitted with your new stuff. Right now I'm teaching at a university that's pretty big on technology and engineering, and I'll bet this project would be a big hit there.

As you know, I have your previous wireless saber sound system, which didn't go over too big here, sadly. It's a great system and I love it. How would you compare the 2 systems in terms of features, sound quality, and performance? I'm sold on the new kits all the way.. Indeed you are powerful, as the Emperor has forseen...

Yeah long time no talk. The plasma hilts should be doable with some modifications. All my boards should fit, as they are 1" wide each. Just depends if you can stack them in the hilt and have enough room for a battery pack too.

The new bluetooth system has the same sound quality as the old system. It even uses the same software. The big difference is that it is now small enough to easily fit inside the hilt. Plus I have a 2 way RF link now, so I can send commands back to the hilt and have the saber do things never seen to date. :D

I will have more on performance later. I dont know working range right now but with a class 1 device it should be pretty good.

I will be installing a new sound board and green blade in a saber hilt this weekend for testing.

Once I get some more blade tubing in stock in I hope to have a red vs. blue video done soon.

Great now I'm picturing two Halo Master Chiefs dueling with Laser Swords. :lol

Tube stock is in. So is the green blade. We should have fun assembling it all up this weekend. :)

Green is supposed to be the brightest source, so I cant wait to see how it turns out...

.....Kev, if you send me your Vader FX I dont think it would make it through the torture tests.  It might be returned with a snapped off blade.  :lol...

No prob.....just return it with one of your blades installed. :p

Seriously....I'm so in if/when this gets to the JY...

Blue blade looks fantastic, I'm sure the green will be the same, so here come a few questions for you:

1. After reading through all of the posts I've never seen you confirm if the blade is removable or not. Yes, no?

2. You're obviously generating enough interest to justify a production run, so then the question becomes: when will you do it? And how many might be available?

3. Realistically, what would a kit like this cost? Doesn't have to be anything specific, I'm talking ballpark here.

I'm simply curious since I've been throwing around the idea of picking up a broken Anakin ROTS on ebay and either sending it to you or ordering a new blade kit. Thanks for the info, great work and good luck.

Did a quick install of the blue blade, it turned out to be very bright.  Here is a comparison pic of the new blade next to a couple EL sabers. :)

as soon as i saw that, the profanity's flew (when i say that i mean it in a good way)...you have to do purple and yellow

ijbrekke, yes the blade is removable. All you have to do is remove the set screws, take out the coupler and unplug the blade. You can replace any color and use the same driver board.

Not sure when/if I will go into production. If I do I plan to have plenty of them manufactured. Pricing is also not totally done. But if I sell a blade kit it will be competitive with current EL and LED blade products currently out there. It might be a tad more expensive due to my component cost, but it is not astronomical by any means...

BTW, the green blade is done.. It took most of the day to retrofit a green blade and a bluetooth sound module into an old MR anakin EL hilt. The results are very good so far. The wireless stuff is very cool to play with. Just a couple more tests and I hope to have this one done. :)

The green turns out to be the brightest of the bunch.. I am driving the green with half the power of the blue or red and it still outshines them both. :eek

Here is a shot of the green blade:

WOW.. NICE WORK..
I don't know if this was asked or mentioned before, but can these blades give a burst of light when hit? You know, like when the blades hit in the OT films they used to add a frame of white and the blades seemed to burst with a pop of white light? Just wondering.

BEAUTIFUL WORK..

B

The blades do not put out a burst of light, but they will have specialized clash circuitry that will be shown off soon.

BTW, people have been asking again and again for a daylight shot of a blade. I finally got around to doing one. :)

Here is the green blade in DIRECT sunlight. The sun was coming right through an unfiltered window on the upper left side. Below is the pic w/ no flash. The blade is certainly bright enough to still be seen in direct sunlight (plus I'm at 5500 ft so I'm 1 mile closer to the sun :p).

Very nice... :eek

After working with EL & Plasma way back when... I really found GREEN to be the nicest and brightest color.

Don't forget, I got dibs on the first green. :D

Wow, your blades are so bright that LFL could use them for the fight scenes without adding any post production enhancements.. Great job.

I can see through time.

:lol

Roman, yeah green plasma was one of the brightest. I loved my old green plasma blade, so I'm excited to finally have something that rivals it and can still be played with. :)

I have some purple LEDs here, I havent built up a blade with those yet. It might be a bit until I get to one, I am trying to get the primary colors going first. But I think some blade should be doable with the purple LEDs. I was planning on doing a yellow test blade then a purple one.
