So we also think the blocky thing on the back of Garth's meter is also a 9V battery?

I can't be 100% sure, but I would bet on it.

I love this thread.
I think an EMF detector will be one of my beginner projects because so many characters in it make their own cobbled together version, so I won't feel too bad if mine looks totally ridiculous.
EDIT: Yours looks totally amazing, but I understand that it's a lot of work.
If you decide not to sell them, do you think it might be possible when you're done to post a small tutorial of what electronics you used and how you hooked them up together to make lights/sounds, for total newbies?
Hi, the funny thing is I'm a newbie too. I am using an Arduino as the "brain". Arduinos are a great way to get started with electronics projects. You can start with a tutorial that just blinks one LED on and off. That's how I got started with this project. Arduino - HomePage
Heh, I was also just thinking about getting into arduino's too. I though that if I liked it and could handle it this might be my first major project using it. Check out my recent post about it for another great link about arduinos from Make.
Thanks Sulla! I'll make a note to check it out when my stupid new member status is up, since apparently I can't view that forum yet.
Update... feeling better. I have to get caught up with my real work, but I may be able to finish with the EMF over the weekend.
This was a pretty nasty flu. Everyone in my house got it.
