I haven't been on theRPF in months. Come back to see what everyone is saying about the trailer. Find out my Star Wars thread is locked down lol.... Anyways my thoughts.
In this day, we don't need a "different" Superman. We don't need to be subverted or the character deconstructed. We need a Superman film, much like Star Wars was in 1977 or, heck, Superman was in 1978. A return to form. Something that's hopeful, and bright. Where right is right, and wrong is wrong. Where the good guys wear white(or blue and red in this case) and the bad guys wear black. And we know who's, who. We don't need moral ambiguity. Our society is being poisoned with it already.
And yeah the trailer is looking good. However I don't trust a modern film maker coming out of modern Hollywood machine. (Or modern Hollywood monster?) So I'm not holding my breath.
And as far as the suit goes. Superman has never had a bad live action suit. (Wait I just remembered that the Nicholas Cage version exists officially.... That one is actually pretty bad.) Otherwise, they've all been pretty good, and done what they've set out to do, with some minor issues along the way.
There are suits like the ones worn by Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Tyler Hoechlin, and Christopher Reeve. (This not an exhaustive list, I know I'm missing a few people.)
They were trying to be 1:1 adaptations. Strait from page to screen. They aren't trying to change things. Now we could argue though, what works for a comic page doesn't necessarily works for the live action screen. (Of course that's subjective, and I for one think they work.)
Then we have suits of Brandon Routh. His are unique.
His suits have one foot in the that classic look. But are modernized, and made into a film costume. Some texture and a raised S shield. I think an argument could be made that these are potentially the best adaptations. Because they bridge two extremes.
Then there's the other suits or Tyler Hoechlin, and this new suit. They are definitely trying to be more modern adaptations. Using the suits of the New 52, Rebirth, or Injustice as inspiration. Leaning more into a sci-fi vibe for some aspects. With sharp lines and angles.
And then there's Henry Cavill's suits. It doesn't try to adapt. It is from, the ground up, a film costume. And it does that well. It's quite a departure. But it does it well.
And honestly I'm here for it all. I like them all (except for that Nichols Cage suit.)
