ALIEN: ROMULUS News And Updates!

Too derivative to be good on its own merits. What's frustrating is if they'd dialed back the callbacks and fanservice, the exact same story would have played a lot better.

The final survivor should have been
Andy, with Rain sacrificing herself to save him.
He was by far the best character, and it would have paid off the themes of loyalty and betrayal set up in the first act.

was the godawful deepfake. I can do better than that with Swapface on my laptap, what gives?

I'm baffled too. I have no idea who signed off on that or how. No exaggerating, I noticed the teeth warping with the lips in one shot.

The role should have been original to the film. Or, failing that,
another David, played by Fassbender. It seems like it may have been written for him at some point, given the Prometheus tie in.

The film is out, why risk looking at a thread if you haven't seen it yet

That's the way all other threads deal with spoilers, once its on general release, its fair game

Usually, we wait more than just a couple days... and it used to be common to put "spoilers" in the OP headline (or do new "post release" thread), from what I remember. Folks may be curious to get opinions before going to see it and such. Why not just use the tags for a bit longer? It's not like it's a major hassle to use the tags... and such a simple courtesy towards fellow RPFers. And it hasn't been released everywhere yet, from what I understand.

It's had its Worldwide Release, Japan & India have a later release date for some reason,....Japan in September???

Sorry, but the day after release is generally the date that spoilers go down, really anyone who ventures into a thread after its release & gets annoyed by spoilers is normally the person who has made the mistake

Nice attitude. Everyone else but you has had the courtesy to use spoiler tags. Are you just lazy or do you enjoy being a jerk to your fellow forum members?

(We have lots of members here from Japan. Not sure if we have any from India.)

I’m sorry JOATRASH fx I’m not doing anything that I’m aware of that is unusual, spoilers do usually apply for advance screenings or inside information, there were plenty of times where I had ventured onto a Mando thread on the morning of its release & topics were openly discussed, this film had its opening in some countries 4 days ago, I saw it 2 days ago

I’ll delete the post

Apologies for snapping. It just felt like such a small effort to use the tags (which kinda exist for a reason).

What we usually do (or at least used to) around was either put "spoilers" in the 1st post OR create a new "post release" thread, since there were lots of arguments before about spoilers. I think maybe there's usually a bit more leeway when it comes to an ongoing TV show, as there is less of a commitment needed to see the episodes. (Most Facebook groups I'm in usually have 2-3 weeks for movies, maybe a week for TV. Twitter on the other hand... that's the wild west!)

For films years ago there used to be a large gap in release dates, because it was celluloid, but now with digital, it’s usually a world wide release date.
If there was something that I’d found out about the film, rumours etc or had seen a screening before the general release date of course I would have used the Spoilers tag & I have in the past

I’m against members creating a new thread just to talk about spoilers especially after the spoiler period is over as this often makes the original thread redundant,
This thread has so many cool links to artwork & videos & its insulting to see it sink & die

JT, you are a gentleman.

I do “cruise” this web and the internet with my eyes half shut with the intent of learning more but not too much before seeing the movie. Alien fan opinions positive and negative matter, but that risky behavior in advance is on me.

Sounds like I missed something at the very end as I had to leave…

I saw her loading Andy into the pod and her setting controls for her own pod I guess. Then I had to run… figured after the mutant birth discharge it was winding down… hopefully I can see all of it again soon.

Almost makes me think it was mostly an animatronic that they then cg’ed over the bottom half, something about the bottom half of the face looked different from the rest. When it was just sitting there it looked fine.

Kept wondering why Weyland wouldnt send some police to chase after a ship going on an unsanctioned path. And how long had that station been essentially dead? Was the company just gonna let it fall into the rings after all that?

And is it implied they somehow got those face huggers from the original xeno? How the helm does that work?

There were some really dark shots near the end action there that made it incredibly hard to tell what the hell was going on.

Agreed—if you go wandering into a thread about a film that has been released, that you have not yet seen, you’re going into the thread with the intention of encountering spoilers; let’s be honest.

I liked it. I even loved some of the stuff in it. But I agree that the story is too thin and derivative to really even worry about. I would have enjoyed a little more time on the planet, maybe a few scenes with corpo type characters in an office reacting to motion sensors on the station picking up human life. Something. The teen slasher formula it is then.

The sound design and music really helped me feel like I was back in the Alien universe. While it didn't take me out of the film, I really don't think a company like WY would just leave THAT station abandoned and adrift that close to an active mining operation. Going into the film I thought we might learn there was some corpo behind tipping off the kids to lure them in, and he or she would drop the security to make it easy for them to get inside. Nope, WY really did just let this station float around on it's own.

I got a chuckle that the android was named Andy. ;) As a big fan of the Weyland-Yutani logo, I was kind of happy to see it overused in all the best "we're a company that loves ourselves, so we brand every single thing we make" type of ways. I got some flack for branding my caseless pulse rifle rounds, but I see that Fede Alvarez understands the point I was trying to make.

The pulse rifles. Yeah. I love the look, but the operation and use was difficult for me to swallow. The "behind the shoulder" feature seems useless. The "pull the trigger halfway" thing, well, that was just stupid and entirely unsafe. With the safety on or not, that's just asking for ND's all over the place.

Anyway, I think overall the film was enjoyable, and the Rook fake face stuff didn't bother me. The call back to the black goo could have been way more horrific. That felt like a missed opportunity more than anything.

I concede the bird on the "diner" table was totally unnecessary. I did like that they used the Tupperware 1312 however. Should have been white, or blue with white wings but maybe since it wasn't on a ship, no wings?

I'd like to see it again to really start tearing it up. I just enjoyed it for what it was that first viewing.

I do like the ship scene where they are sitting around drinking the beer, and the one guy has a well-worn beer ad shirt, like the ones the bar and/or liquor store give away. That I really appreciated.

I don't think David would be the right one to recycle for CGI there. He was Mr. Weyland's "son", and I doubt he'd make multiples. Ash may not have been the best choice either, but it was kind of neat to see him (well, his CGI) playing his old part. But Ash isn't necessarily the standard issue "evil science officer" although he was a last-minute crew change on the Nostromo, let's not forget, so perhaps he IS the standard issue evil science guy?

I saw it yesterday, enjoyed it. I didn't have a lot of expectations going in - I hadn't watched any trailers or read any info about it. Right from the beginning, I was pleased to see the crt monitors and the pixilated graphics displayed on them. The entire production - the direction, costumes, set design, music - all felt evocative of the late 70s-early 80s time period of the original films. Even the choice of opening credit fonts, plus they had the look that they were optically produced rather than digitially. I really appreciate that Fede Alvarez took pains to make a film that would fit in between Alien and Aliens, not just narratively, but also fitting the esthetics of the films.

As far as comments about "too much fan service," I guess I don't have as much of a connection to the series and haven't seen the other films enough to notice everything, so it mostly didn't affect my experience. I wasn't really planning on seeing this in a theater, but I had some time and had finally just watched Alien: Covenant. I like the Alien movies, haven't see them all, but Alien and Aliens are obviously the best of the series, with Prometheus and Covenant being the next best (in that order) in my opinion. I saw Alien³ and Resurrection (both had problems) and didn't see the other Alien related films. I think Romulus could now be the 3rd best film of the franchise, though it's hard to rank them at this point.

I especially like the exploration of the "humanity" of the synthetics that occurs more in the newer films (Prometheus and the subsequent movies). I understand that the Alien and Blade Runner films are supposedly within the same universe, though I think any direct references have only been made in supplemental materials to the films, not anything directly on-screen. But they share the concept of artifically produced humanoids and how they're treated/viewed/used in society, with obvious parallels to slavery as well exploring the ideas of the existence of "souls," free will, and "good and evil."

Going back to the "fan service" elements and the esthetics of the film, I do wonder if we're bordering of "nostalgia porn" for a lot of the big studio productions. I mean, I did like this movie for evoking the feeling of a film from around 1980, but one could argue that studios are going overboard with trying to give people of a certain age nostalgic vibes, like with any of the Star Wars projects, movies Iike Deadpool & Wolverine, and Spider-Man: No Way Home being a few examples. Is it a cheap way to get people excited about newer movies by trying to connect them directly to past projects? Maybe. I still fall for it a lot, though.

Soooooooo

On my personal scale if it makes sense to you....

If ALIEN and ALIENS are a 9 or 10 depending which of the two you may favor more. Or perhaps both 10 as I would have to say. If you saw them in theaters you certainly walked out changed. LOL

And the other many films for me are frankly not even at best a 5, Or unwatchable, forgettable or just plain WTF was that?????

Where would you say this one would reside for me?

On that scale, I'd give it a 6.
