Thanks for the tip Gallifreyan. I googled for victory rolls but couldn't really find the bun kind. They mostly gave me curls. Do you have any tips on how I can make this on a wig? My hair is unfortunately too short to even tie a stump.
Cereza you look great! Love your Babydoll photos.
Hello! I also did Amber and I had my hair done at a salon, my stylist explained to me how he did it. I don't think he followed how victory rolls are done, he just did what he could to my hair so it'll look like Amber's .
I'm not a professional wig stylist, I just learned through experimentation. Here is a sample of my work
Purple wig had 2 layers of "donuts" . I used a "hair rat" in the form of polyurethane foam "donuts"
Anyway for the wig, a mid (back) length would work perfectly. You'll need:
- biggest plastic hair rollers. I prefer this
style rather than the velcro type because it's easier to remove.
- wig stand,
- wide tooth comb, hair pins, very strong hold hair spray
barrette
- hot water or steamer
- Put your wig on the stand. Tie it into a low ponytail use a barrette to secure, try to tie where you want your hair roll to sit (nape of your neck).
- divide into sections. If you were able to find jumbo rollers i think 4 sections will do.
- put on the rollers, roll the hair outward. Roll tightly and secure tightly with hair pins if necessary.
- to set the curls , you can either pour hot water (NOT BOILING) over the wig, concentrating on the rollers. Or apply hot steam. I prefer the steam method coz it's faster but this is also more risky because if you get too close or the steam is too hot, the wig will frizz and there is no way to repair it.
- you can do this as many times as you want until the wig achieves a curl. (I left a wig in rollers for a week before.) You just need the curl to give the wig some body and it'll make the rolling (later) easier and it'll hold the shape better.
- carefully remove the rollers. then brush the wig lightly with a wide tooth comb just to bring the hair together.
- carefully remove the barrette then take a small section of hair at the bottom/under part of the wig, secure it with a rubber band. Then clip the rest back again. Align the direction f the curls. make sure that they are all facing(?) outward.
Here comes the fun part...
- gather the hair ans start rolling outwards, same way you did with the rollers except this time you're rolling the entire hair. The tightness of the roll depens on how big you want the hair roll to be and how thick the wig is.
- You can secure the roll w/ hair pins as you go and don't forget to generously spray it with hair spray. Keep rolling until you reach the nape/the end where the barrette i. secure w/ more pins if needed.
- Then un-clip the small section of hair that you clipped away before and use it. to cover the barrette.
- If you are having difficulties retaining the shape, you can use a hair rat. Use it as a "filling" and roll the hair the same way as above, imagine rolling a burrito.
And you're done.
I hope my instructions are understandable. Feel free to ask if there is a part that you find confusing. I'll try my best to explain it.
