Sucker Punch costume thread

Nice work ppl. Can't wait to see more of some babydoll ^^

Nice job on that 1911 pistol too epilepticsquirl. Did you get the decal made or did you do it ? Any source ?

Do you plan on actually engrave it ? as I believe it is on the original pistol. That would look awesome.

Hey Kathy, Amazon .com and .ca both just cancelled my art book as well! WTF! I ordered from the .com site in late Jan. How can they be out of stock and not getting anymore when the book is just a few month old? (oh, but I can get one used for just under $300!)

Thanks guys!

SI: The weight and feel of this gun is awesome. yea them grips are rather pricey. Going to try my hand at making my own grips. At least that way I can control the color and what not. We'll see!

Interceptor: I made the decals myself. Cheaper than laser engraving, though I'd like to do that eventually.

I ordered it from Amazon because of the great price, but I was able to find a copy at my local Chapters store - gotta pay list price though <sigh>

Found a good article about distressing the linen of Babydoll's uniform using sandpaper, etc. I guess the most appropriate method for this is their tip of utilizing coarser sandpaper then a finer grade eventually.

Distressing Fabric

I'm going to have to check again, Darth Mule. Because looking at the actual exhibit pics, I thought it was denim, until Jason (the one who took the pictures) explained that it wasn't denim but linen that was distressed. Most silks I have encountered have sheen and shine, but Babydoll's clothing does not. So I'm pretty convinced it's linen or cotton fabric.

It could be thai silk or linen. I'm not a expert myself. We wont know unitll we get a chance to see the costume directly, touch them (impossible, lol) or see some catalogue of the fabrics they used. My bfirend has a Anakin costume, and he has a catalogue of fabrics that George Lucas made specially for the fans in a book, so he has the exact references of the fabrics there. I wish every movie had that. But we cannot compare SP with SW.
Back to the point, when I did my costume last year I had no idea about the fabrics, so I did it with gabardine and it looks pretty similar too, I'd like to change the sailor neck to linen or that silk you Darth Mule mentioned. And also try to give to the gabardine that distressing look.

Raw silk noil has no shine or sheen. I got my fabric in last night in the mail, I'll post pictures of the fabric up close after I get home from work tonight.

It's also important to note that the site does not state for a fact it's linen from an official source. Just that it's their opinion as some who saw the costumes that it was a denem-like linen fabric.

So are you all suggesting to not use denim, but perhaps some other type of fabric? Going fabric shopping soon for the collar fabric. Was initially going to use denim, but now trying to find something cheaper (on a budget!)

The fabric i used for my sword strap is denim though. But I do not think it has to match the actual costume fabric at all.

ALSO, anyone know a place to buy a (cheap) wooden sword and sheathe/scabbard? I have been searching, but, alas, have came up with nothing of use.

Indeed. Don't go to denim. Well, that's my opinion. It's not denim at all and I really don't like how it looks :sleep When I was looking for fabrics i thought of denim, but doesn't match with a "college sailor" uniform, lets say schoolgirl / moe. I went with gabardine, the one that is used for school uniforms here, but if I could do it again now with all the new references I would do it with the fabrics told before, some thai silk or linen. I love my gabardine costume anyways *jum*

So I've been lurking around this thread for the past few weeks and I finally decided to join, just to commend you guys on your fantastic work! You're all insanely creative and talented.

Personally, I'd love to make a Baby Doll costume (and then maybe Blondie), but my sewing skills are pretty much zero, so I might just end up commissioning one. I've already bought shoes, so I have at least something. Keep going guys, I look forward to seeing all your progress and finished work. :)

Hey all, just wanted to chime in and say that a friend of mine and I are developing six very accurate replicas of Babydoll Colt 1911s, using airsoft versions of the pistol with metal parts, real rosewood grips with checkering and diamond patter, real engraved metal Colt medallions, hand-sculpted charms, accurate decals of the barrel etchings and custom mirror-reflective chrome finish. The first is for RebellionBarbie and the rest, who knows! :-D

Definately not denim, we're not making canadian tuxedo's after all! /jk

These are pics of the fabric I got in the mail. It's Raw Silk Noil, and as you can see it's not shiny or smooth at all. You can also see in the close ups that it actually has a very knobby texture to it. The blue I got is called "Ink", and the other is much less original....grey! :lol

I'll be buying mine from http://www.speedykarate.com/oakbowsc.html Their regular prices are below what I used to get wholesale from other martial arts companies like century or AWMA. They have one on there for $15.95 plus shipping, and it comes with a wooden sheath that is very close to the right color already.

I'm 99.9% sure it's silk noil. I'm quite well read on fabric identification. Part of my grad studies involved being able to tell a fabric by sight and feel, and that one in particular has a very distinct texture to it.
Silk Noil, also called "raw silk" is basically waste. After they make all the good silk products, they take the waste and mash it into threads that they weave noil out of. It isn't shiny at all. The Qui Gonn Jinn costume is another movie costume, off the top of my head, that is made with noil.

I tried to throw together a little comparison shot in photoshop. Unfortunately the BabyDoll pics isn't quite high res, but I think you can sort of tell what's going on here. The noil requires much less to achieve that distressed look.

Where did you purchase your noil from? I have a swatchbook from Thaisilks and they don't seem to have a good denim blue like you found.

Thanks Tonka and Cereza! Very helpful.
I'm peruse the fabric stores around here to see if there is something of use. If not, guess its yet another thing I'll have to order from the internet ^_^
