Incredible mate!. Iv'e said this before & I'll say it again, your painting skills are second to none, I only hope that I get half as good as you dude. Those colors look spot on to me Guy, very subtle shading there mate. Of course your building skills are to be admired as well!.
I would love to own someday, a Guy Cowen replica of some sort, how about it dude, you take commissions now and again?.
Stu:)

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

Guy, that's trully amazing, it's a perfect match to the ref pics I have ! The A is one of my fav ROTJ model and you nailed it perfectly ! I'm envious and jealous. :)

Cheers Julien, I have to say it wouldn't have been half as nice had I not seen how it should be done when I was at your place mate. Seeing how you & Lee build inspired me to do better & better than I would left to my own standards.

So in a way it is part down to you but you still cant have it though :lol

I think Mike could set up an A wing factory if he wanted at the moment. I have to say seeing it next to all my builds & MR stuff it blows the hell out of everything I've got. Even though I'm not a big ROTJ fan I love the ships & when I look at this Its like I got one at home. Cool.

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

:lol:lol

And I thought this looked good in primer.:eek Fantastic work Guy, it's beautiful.

Cheers, even I'm shocked how nice it looks.

Thanks Stu, I really should do a quick Vid as it really isn't hard to get the look that I did on the A wing, I know that sounds a bit wellll! But I really anyone can do this. Its all about the ref material, the more I have the easier it gets. With the Red i was careful not to mix what you see in the pics. If you look at the ref closely you can se some scratches on the Red, if you look at the edge of the scratches you see the real Red color underneath the ILM weathering.

You can then see what color to do the mist coat, which to me was done when they painted the grey panels. so I guessed the mist coat was grey & the Red now looks Maroon color so it should have blue in the gray also.
On the top hull one panel is a very light blue grey, so thats what I used. Instant maroon color & also resembles the years of dust as well.

The only thing that bothered me were the stains all over the hull, these were tough to get right & they're OK on my hulls but not spot on. I've hand painted some of the darker edges on some of the stains to look more like the ILM model, but wyou wouldn't know if I didn't tell you :cool

As for commission work, I'd consider anything but prefer to Paint rather than scratch build. My trouble is actually finding the time as I start touring again this month & it goes on for the rest of the year. You know where I am if you have any idea's though. I'd love to paint for other people if I can.

I've sold a few of my builds & Lee had seen what I can do up close. I know My B wing went down a storm when it arrived at its new home as did the Probe droid.

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

guy, i'm embarrassed that i'm finally reading this build. i had it bookmarked for a rainy day, but that was def'ly my mistake.

while drooling over the paint job, i have a bit of memory loss (from a few pages before) how great the construction/build is itself. your paint skills are quite the mesmerizer. makes one forget about everything else!

one question though...and pardon my ignorance on the overall subject of the a-wing (even though i've always loved its overall design), but I'm surprised the two ovaloid thrusters were scratched. it "seems" like i've seen a few jets with those types of thrusters. i presume you know better and have done your homework (since it obviously shows). i just figured those shapes had a donor out there somewhere?

hats way way way off to your man.

Thanks Q mate, not much has changed this week I'm so busy, its killing me not being able to finnish it. As for the engines I think that Donor parts were used but scaled up by ILM for some reason as with a few other models. Its pretty damn big to be honest & any kit would have to around 1/16-1/18th scale to come near in size. I'm no ID expert though & I'm sure someone may turn them up one day hopefully? You no what I'm going to go & paint for a bit now :cool

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

Yeah, like on several ROTJ models, they used kitparts as inspiration (Revell F14 fuselage for the A-Wing fuselage, F-16 for the rear thruster etc...). You can see that on the Lambda shuttle (flakvierling38 shields scratched and enlarged), ROTJ AT-ST (inspired from TESB parts, most of them are enlarged and scratched), speederbike (based on the 312T hull, F-15 intake, all that enlarged and refined) etc...

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

I can kinda imagine it, ILM staff being lazy coming up designs knowing they can just pull the parts off kits, should've been a doddle for them.....Then along comes uncle George "Great stuff guys now make em twice the size?"

Some downward smiles that day I thinks :lol

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

Hell Guy this is just fantastic. we knew you could paint but now your a scratch builder aswell. Nice work mate. Can't waite to see your next project. :cool

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

Got away from work emailing for a while & put some effort back into the A wing. Only got an hour in or so but managed to get quite a lot done. I've took some closer shots so you can see how it looks so far. Mostly with a flash from close range so the color isn't great but you can see the details better

I have to say, my biggest hope with this paint job is it looks as old as the prop is today. I really want it to look vintage and used.

Just looking fantastic Guy....WOW excellent work glad you
found some time for it!:thumbsup

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

That is extrordinary paint work Guy. Michael's & your work on this model has been a pleasure to watch unfold. Also everyones help with the part Id's. This site is the best place anywhere to get parts Id'd. Keep up the good work.

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

Thanks Mike I'm so close but still dont know if I can finish before I go way on Monday...........fingers crossed

Jason, your right mate if it wasn't for Mike's extreme talent & the support of everyone here on the RPF this build would be nice but not the clone I was looking for.

I've had some amazing comments form various boards about my last pics & to me its incredible how people are so kind with there thoughts. I still just cant help but look at it & think, OK lets re do this re do that, start again on this bit etc etc. I guess I have the same attitude as some of the scratch builders with there part ID's but I put the energy into the paint work more.

I also promise that pics do not do it justice, when you see it up close even I still think WOW! I (we) did that. I'm so used to painting GK's when all the really hard work is done by someone else before the kit arrives but this time we all did it together. So its a very special build for me especially as its my first completed scratch (nearly) I still need 2 more bloody Gepards for the right Ring.

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.

You say that because you have been working on it so long!! Try this take something safe and cover it for.........like 5 days so you can't see it! Then take the the cover off and see how much you appreciate it.....works every time, I do this with the pod car!!:lol It has a big white T-shirt covering it every two or three weeks I take it in the kitchen and slip the T-shirt off and it's like looking at a brand new model!!!LOL

Regards,
Michael

Re: ID help Studio Scale A wing.
