Here is the way I understand it based on the photo from when it was donated to the Smithsonian:

And in hi-res without the graphic:

You can check it out also at the Star Trek history site on one of the bottom slides here (click through the slides until you get to the nacelle part):

Interesting. I just watched the start of The Tholian Web and they spin the opposite way rotating to inwards. Did a double check viewing the start of Let That Be Your Last Battlefield and they spin outwards like you show it. Then about 19 minutes in there's a shot of the port bussard rotating inwards!
So it appears the techs reversed the spin not only from one episode to the next, but even within the same epsiode.

They may have ran the film backwards.

Thanks guys. Well sometimes when we shoot things for effects we reverse print the footage. Play it backward for effect. I also noticed that sometimes the beacon over the shuttle bay blinks too. The rate of the blinking on the NAV lights changes. This can all be attributed to camera speed, direction, and lastly exposure and lighting. This is changed so often during shooting.

Steve, your explanation makes the most sense. They were getting a job done, who cares what a bunch of people think 40+ years in the future.

Here is what I came up with using the very image Feek is referring to.
lightpattern.jpg

I didn't put in the bulbs orientation, I was focused on the main source of light. I don't think the mirrors would have been an issue. Since you would have had several lights blinking at the same time(due to reflection).

Most of this stuff is guess work, since we have no idea of what might have been done to the model, between the time of the last shooting and the pics Feek is showing. All we can do is attempt to recreate the effect, and if it meets one's perception, then it's done.

I was thinking of matching this on the 11 footer, but I'm opting for something much more uniform and efficient(leds). As well as not dealing with the heat issue.

I've got to tell you guys I just love this stuff . . . the things I am learning about this ship, how it was built, which way the blades on the Nacelles’ spun -chuckle. Such details appeal to me in a way I just can't describe. I'm sure many would think it's all just crazy talk, still for those who grew up watching Star Trek and this ship week after week, a kind of life raft for the crew who manned her . . . whatever, I'm starting to ramble on. Feels good though reading and listening to you guys sharing the same fascination with her that I have.

Thanks.

RW.

Looking at the photos of the seeming chaos inside that nacelle from the photo of tv model it looks more like the aftermath of someone taking a sledge hammer to the lights than something that was done on purpose to create the effect we came to love! I always thought the lights were moving inside and not the 'cage'. It's great to learn something new.

Guys here's a few pictures of the model as the last video uploads.

This isn't the end but the beginning of the Enterprise Project. My short film where you will see this ship in space and in dry dock. I will be on the bridge and take her out for an adventure that will have some surprises in it.

I will be starting a new thread called the Enterprise Project. Question is where do I put it as it will encompass the building of the CGI bridge. The captain's chair which is a practical build. The uniforms and more. Where?

Art if you're listening please advise. This is a studio model and will be use as such. Green screen shoots and all.

Thanks for all the support guys you got me through this and are all part of the long story.

Steve

Thanks John it was great yes.

Here it is. For now.

The Big E Story Part 47...

Thanks very much for the screen credit! I didn't expect to see that! Now I'm part of the "story" and I didn't have to sweat at all!
I have downloaded all these videos for reference and inspiration. Thanks for all the tips and the "how to's, especially with wiring up LEDS!
Having lived in a house in Northridge years ago, I know how hot those garages in Southern California can get and its amazing how you tolerated that!
Good luck on the rest of "the story"!
Best Wishes

Awesome work, Steve.
I had a friend over yesterday and I asked if he was a Star Trek fan. He said he was so I showed him the model. He was floored. He reckons you nailed it.

Can't wait to hear yah yelling "Warp speed, Rosie" as you take her for a spin.

This journey may be over, but I've enjoyed every step along the way.

I've waited months so I could finally say at the end of it all that this is a masterpiece.

Thanks for hanging in with the build and the videos and never once flagging, Steve.

I'll also never look at another TOS Enterprise build again because there can be only one!

Cheers

Steve

That is so gorgeous. Your videos have been amazing, Steve. I'm a writer, and work from home, and it's become my habit to start my day with your video. I'm really going to miss following your progress on this... but you know what they say... "all good things..." I'll be looking forward to your next build! Thanks also for including the names of the board members who have been following the build... it makes us feel included in your accomplishment. Nice, nice touch.
