Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release) (Spoilers)

Empire is by far the best film, and Luke, Han, and Leia only share a few moments together. I like the idea of having Hamill being revealed from the shadows, and BOOM, end credits.

I'd be down for a late-in-the-movie Luke reveal.

I'd also be down for Han going out in the blaze of glory. Han isn't the kind of character I want to see withering away in a la-z-boy until he eventually dies from heart disease in the comfort of his own home. I want to see him go out strong and make a big impact.

The problem with a late reveal IMO is that you're either going to **** off a lot of people or everyone is going to know early on who luke is.

Why?

It's been massively publicized since the announcement of 7-9 (more or less) that all three principals would be back. I'd bet 90-100% of people going to see it are expecting to see Luke. To get 2 minutes at the end is going to hack off a lot of people I think. Now, had they NOT said who was in it and they pulled reveal like that - the place would @#$%ing insane at the revelation. Mainly because it'd be the culmination of a dream for lots of people and a massive surprise at that. Knowing it's coming and having to wait til the last second isn't going to work too well IMO. Especially if the point is to hit the high notes and do a good/great story and get the franchise back to OT levels which they imply is the goal.

If you're going to do a reveal I think it'd need to be not much past the halfway point frankly. Balance both sides of it. Draw it out a bit, but not too long. The people want to see Luke, Leia, and Han. I think they're going to give that one.

But it is the sequel to the OT staring the cast of the OT.

There have been new actors in every episode since ANH, but people didn't queue up to ESB and ROTJ to see Dak, Lobot, Mon Mothma, and General Nadine.

We all know the future of the franchise is in the hands of the new young actors, but the reason we even have new star wars movies, the reason why the OT is so loved, is in the original characters and the actors who played them.

This isn't a very cogent argument. There has been no official effort to create expectations about how features in the film and in what capacity. They only teaser didn't even feature the OT characters. There is no meaningful truth behind the statement that 90-100% of people are going into this film expecting it to revolve around Luke or Han or ay of the OT characters. There is with the utmost certainty 100% of people going into this film hoping to see a great STAR WARS film.

At this point I'd say it's more accurate to say that it's a sequel to the OT that's featuring but not necessarily starring the OT cast.

I'm not gonna lie, I'll be disappointed if Luke only gets a minute or two of screen time at the end of the film.
But I'll get over it if the movie is awesome.

I didn't say revolve around them. I said see them.

I've seen commercials for years for shows saying 'tune in to <whatever> to see so and so' and lo and behold, they show up for 2 seconds at the end and you feel cheated. I think regardless of how good, that a lot of people will come away disappointed if luke comes out only in the last 30 seconds.

Besides isn't there also something in the many many pages of this thread where it's said Lucas' story was tossed because it focused too much on the new characters and not enough on the old? We won't know if it's true until december, but if it is, it would imply he gets a reasonable amount of time as himself.

But no marketing so far has promised to deliver the OT characters in any way whatsoever. Of course we know they feature, and I suspect Han features quit prominently. And you are being somewhat myopic. This is a planned trilogy. If they make the creative choice to have Luke appear at the end of 7 and feature more prominently in 8, how is that cheating the fans? Are we so impatient? Don't we just want an awesome 3 film story?

As I said above, Paul, if the intent if for Luke to be pivotal to Ep.VIII we need to be more appreciative of the bigger picture here.

To be clear they could dish up an OT reunion film and it would make me cry tears of joy, but I am just as excited for them to shake this up a bit. Don't open with a ship on space, open with a lightsaber floating around (assuming they can make the context of that make sense), do a flashback or two, I don't think we need to adhere 100% to George's visual and narrative choices and still make it FEEL like Star Wars, both to the old fans and to the new.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for myself, if Han dies in the movie and there hasn't been a "reunion" of the original three characters with all of them in a scene together, even if its just one short scene, I will be flipping pi$$ed. And why wouldn't they? Even if its not something the fans are standing outside of the Lucasfilm offices and demanding with torch and pitchfork, you can bet your bottom dollar that it will get at the very least a standing O and probably also go down in history as one of the best (if not the best) moments in movie history, right alongside the "I am your father" reveal.

And here is why any STAR WARS films regardless of quality will have it's detractors. SW fans sometimes can be so unreasonable and pedantic.

I hope it's not true, but it could be a really powerful moment if done correctly. Say you have everything going downhill all the way through the film. Then at the last moment, Luke turns up and ignites his lightsaber, says catchy line, and credits.

I never said or implied that it wouldn't be an otherwise and overall great film. I am the most reasonable SW fan there ever was; I do not now nor have I ever had any problems with the SE changes to the OT and I love the PT. They could make an ewok the hero of the story and I'll still defend the end product if I am entertained by it. So please, don't lump me in with the haters and the ones who are never satisfied, because I am not, by any stretch of the imagination.

We agree, but based on what you wrote you have very specific expectations. All I am suggesting is we keep an open mind as I think this creative team is looking to do something new and exciting. I apologize if I mischarecterized your comment. :)
