Star Wars The Acolyte (tv series)

I quite enjoyed it. But it felt a bit like a run-of-the-mill crime drama just set in the Star Wars universe.

The only thing that took me out of it was that the guy from The Good Place was playing his character here the same way.

The green chick (Leslye Headland's wife) is apparently supposed to be a Miralan: the same race as Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee. I miss a headdress.
Oh that’s who that was!

Asian Ezra Miller

I actually find him terrible in the good place but thought he was good here

I actually thought there was some decent dialogue episode 2… and that thought rarely crosses my mind in Star Wars media

(Cept Bill Burr chats in mando season 2)

Manny? He was the best part!

Yep, I noticed that too. It’s very odd to me that inclusion of minorities require the removal of all white men.

Charitably, it's an overcorrection in an attempt to include more minorities. Hopefully we'll see things swing back a bit to a more actually inclusive (that is, a little bit of everybody) model.

Less charitably, I see a lot of anger in people who defend entirely nonwhite casting, so it could also be an expression of rage by people who feel wronged. That might take longer to even out.

Watched the 1st episode, didn't grab me. I know it's only the 1st one, but my biggest criticism/question is "why should I care about these characters?" I understand there's more backstory coming, but I feel like 35-40min should be enough time to give some reason to want to follow these characters. I guess they're relying on the fact that we have some attachment to the Jedi from previous Star Wars content.

I also realize that there's supposed to be some abiguity about the main character, but that's cleared up with a clunky plot twist. Also, for a show that's supposed to rely on a mystery, the mystery itself doesn't seem too intriguing to me.

I guess maybe most new Star Wars stuff isn't for me. I'm not going to blame anyone - Disney's just taking a property that was created almost 50 years ago and trying to keep all the fans from all the different iterations, while also creating new fans. There's bound to be changes that don't appeal to everyone. I'm not a fan of the prequel stuff or the animated shows, but clearly there's a market that is, and Disney has been trying to cater to them as well.

Something worth noting: after I watched the 1st ep, I looked up some of the reviews. All the critic reviews I saw, which are mostly positive, said they reviewed the first 4 episodes, and apparently episode 3 is getting a lot of positive attention (it's described as being a mostly self-contained episode). So keep that in mind, since the average viewer has only been able to watch the first 2 eps. I'm not sure if the promise of a great episode 3 is enough for me to keep going, but maybe I'll change my mind.

Here's the review from rogerebert.com that mentions the 3rd episode being better than the others (and why that may be a bit of a problem):

I refer you to my previous comment about Kenobi.

That really is the closest comparison I can think of from the other SW shows. The acting is fine, the dialog is functional exposition peppered with a bit of character stuff. I did notice a line or two where Lee Jung-jae's delivery felt stiff or weird, due I think to him not being fluent in English. Otherwise, Sol is okay. He has a good scene with Osha. I like the actor, he's got charisma and good chemistry with the actress playing Osha/Mae.

A lot of how I feel about this show will depend on where it goes and how it all wraps up. I do like the look inside the Jedi at their height, there's hints of politicking and worldbuilding there that I enjoyed. The big mystery is "what, exactly, did the Jedi do to create a killer?" which isn't quite as riveting as a proper whodunit, but it's okay.

The only other thing that jumped out at me -- and I will preface this by saying it's not a knock against the cast or the quality of their work -- was the total absence of white men in the first episode, and the presence of only one white man in the second. It doesn't affect the quality of the show, but as a white man myself the large shift from other Star Wars media (and the media landscape in general over most of my life, to be fair) really was noticeable. It's the sort of thing you know has to be a deliberate decision and as such it rankles a bit.
Thanks for your response, I did see one clip on youtube with Carrie Anne Moss' character in it and i actually felt sorry for her as an actress because the lines in the dialogue she had to deliver were corny, horrendous and entirely not believeable...like as she was speaking it, she was saying to herself" you have to be kidding me". lol. It was between her and one of the twins, not sure the actual scene. Personally, i could never be sold on a Kenobi comparison because that was my least favorite out of all the shows thus far...it was unbearable! To be fair, it was probably the most unbearable for me because it was the closest to the OT and it had so many contradictions and head scratchers in it, and yes, it was inessential.

Thanks for sharing your opinion

By this I mean in phantom menace he introduced speed runs…. Which I haven’t seen again and wonder why a Jedi hasn’t used since - I mean they did it on instinct…
Kyle Katarrn did Force Running in the Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II computer game from 1997 though.

In the EU novels, different Jedi had different affinity for different things. So some would have been better at Force Running while others never did it.

From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!

Really, who talks like that? :D

I mean this is the guy who started stealing Luke's food and beating his droid for 20 minutes before telling him who he really was. I'd imagine after being 800 years old he hasnt had a perfect stand up reputation every time.
EXACTLY!!!

LOL

So,…we don’t like Yoda?

Was I the only one who was watching the dance choreography of the “Force-Fu” fighting scenes…

….and was thinking back to all the times in the OT and PT when Jedi used their laser swords to immediately disarm an enemy (and slice off their arm if needed) and was shouting at the screen:

“Just take out your laser sword and end this!”

Anyone else?
