Star Wars The Acolyte (tv series)

I believe that pointing out characters' sexual orientation (not "preference," as it implies a choice that can be changed, or "cured") when it doesn't affect the story is kind of the point. It's to make people realize that different sexual orientations are normal. There's not an easy way to do that without having at least some reference to it onscreen - if they didn't mention it, no one would know.

I also don't think The Acolyte has had any sexual orientation written "deliberately" into the show, as you say, at least not in the first 2 episodes, unless I missed it. Maybe it will come later, I don't know, but I don't think your criticism is valid at this point. I can't speak to any ststements or interviews by the creative team behind The Acolyte.

There's certainly more references to sexual orientation and gender identity in entertainment at this point than in the past, but that's mainly because societal "norms" have changed, so our entertainment reflects that. I understand it can seem like a lot, but just look at the history of mainstream film and tv and you'll see how underrepresented many groups have been - or simply stereotyped when onscreen - and also due in large part to underepresentarion at the top of the studios. So now we're getting a bit of an overload of people of more diverse groups getting an opportunity to create content without the past constraints that made ot impossible.

While I think it's good thst there's more represention now, I'm also feeling that some of it feels like pandering. But these are huge corporations. They've always pandered to whoever they think will help them make the most money. It's silly to get upset because they aren't pandering to your particular group as much as they have in the past. They're going with the trends as much, if not moreso, than trying to present any sort of "agenda."
But why--in the context of this story--do we NEED to **make people realize that different sexual orientations are normal**?

Its not relevant to the story, or to Star Wars.

THAT is the point.

Meanwhile...
I wish i was making this story up but it's true...I thought to myself, some of the best female characters in the Star Wars universe are in the game of KOTOR 1 and 2. You have Atris, Bastila Shan, Visas Marr, Juhani, Kreia...etc. Anyways, i just sighed because a while ago i would have loved a movie, or Live-Action TV show(Done right of course) but i knew i would never want it done now.....

4 Hours later....

I just looked up The Acolyte after a post and came across this....Is another nightmare is in the works?

You clearly didnt watch the entire video, it get VERY political AND religious, and doesnt belong here.

And no I dont think everything is political, but a video talking about the president, Middle East conflict, god, and how identity representation is “destroying” the country and children, yeah that’s a little political, don’t you think?
The video was linked in order to provide evidence when someone said they hadnt heard that Headland claimed R2 was gay.

Everyone not looking to start crap knows this.

The video belongs here, because its content re: Star Wars--and the interview with Headland and Stenberg--were referened earlier.

Oh yeah good ole Kylash, the guy who’s always starting crap on the RPF…what?

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn’t watch the entire thing, though I don’t now why you’d then defend the entire thing.

Regardless, the content of that interview felt pretty innocent and playful to me. Is anyone telling me they’ve never heard C-3PO as being “gay coded” in character and mannerisms? Like even going back to the 80s? Its been parodied to death. That’s what lead to the joking R2 comment. If you all are taking that seriously…

If I’m overreacting about that post, you all are over reacting to the actual contents and words of the director.

Anyway this thread is now nothing but posts from people I ignore, so I’m out.
Not over reacting at all, the director is and wants everyone to know she is gay and so will some characters. That's an agenda not story telling.
